If you're interested in a trackball at a mid-range price point, we recommend the ELECOM HUGE M-HT1DRBK. It's a versatile finger-operated trackball with a right-handed shape. It includes a conventional scroll wheel with left and right tilt buttons and ten programmable inputs. It also has an integrated leatherette wrist rest which, true to its name, makes it fairly large and bulky. However, it's still a good fit for all but small-sized hands.

It connects wirelessly with a USB receiver and uses a pair of AA batteries for power. You can use the companion software for remapping buttons and adjusting CPI settings. However, only three CPI presets are available, and the highest setting is only 1200 CPI, which may not be sensitive enough if you use a very high-resolution display. Unfortunately, this trackball doesn't have Bluetooth support like the Logitech MX ERGO, and like all mice on this list, apart from the GameBall Mouse, it has a very low fixed polling rate, making it unsuitable for gaming. That said, it's an affordable option with plenty of customizable controls for productivity or everyday use.

 The biggest issue, and the reason I sent it back, was the stickiness of the trackball movement. There was nothing I could do to get it to roll smoothly from a stopped state, it would always jerk, making precise movements impossible. Not only was this not good for gaming, but even something as simple as copy and paste were difficult to use with this mouse.

 The buttons are very well placed, though I miss the DPI switch on the side. Here it is on the bottom. Just as with the Huge, I don't like the stickiness of the trackball. Compared to the Logitech M570 and Ergo, which are smooth as butter, it's hard to justify keeping anything that doesn't move as smoothly, even if the buttons and scroll wheel do feel superior to those on the Logitech mice

 Even at low DPI precision is decreased. Weight: Mouse itself is moderately heavy with 4 sticky pads on the bottom to prevent sliding. It does a pretty decent job of staying in place. Quality: Buttons feal nice, solid audible clicks

 Weight: The weight of the mouse is lighter than the Huge, but heavier than the EX-G, and nearly twice the weight of the Logitech M570. Ironically, with not much pressure, it will slide across my desk, where the M570 under the same pressue won't move at all. The M570 is actually the most solid mouse I have. Quality: Just like the Huge, the buttons are a nice solid click, the scroll wheel has very obvious detents

 Fortunately, because the ball weight is slower, the coefficient of friction is lower so that it takes less effort to get the ball rolling. But, it still does cause the mouse cursor to jerk and that makes precision movement difficult.  However I find that every modern trackball has to be ‘treated’ out of the box. Here is my method:  Get some Engleside Old Fashioned Kitchen Wax & Cleaner. ASIN: B005WW1JF6. Give the ball a good washing with liquid dish detergent

 As you move back on the button the force changes to where it won’t click at all. This does tend to slow me down when working, as I have to find the sweet spot to click.  The thing is, that is just opposite of the so-called Button #5. The rear of the button is easier to click than the front, go figure

 They used steel wheels to track movement and were really rough. Modern trackballs such as this Elecom use reflected light off the ball to track movement. The stretch is uncomfortable, but worse, that integrated wrist rest makes me want to throw it at wall. Any chance of finding a comfortable position for my hand to reach the buttons is destroyed by the darn wrist pad area!! If I could turn it slightly, I might be able to reach comfortably with some practice, but because of that pad, I can't & its infuriating!! To be so very close to the device I need & not be able to use it

As odd as this sounds, my hand is too big for this trackball. The heel of my palm sits at the very edge of the palm rest, and I have to do an awkward claw type grip to position my fingers over the ball and buttons. I'm sure this would be very comfy with a smaller hand, but for me it was just not usable. For reference, my hand is about 7

5" long from heel of my palm to the tip of my middle finger.  It's a shame, though, because the tracking accuracy of this thing is very good, and it looks really cool on my desk. I've ordered a Kensington Expert Mouse instead to see how that goes.  It would also be nice to see some sort of trackball-based scrolling on this; it is quite awkward to use scroll wheel with my thumb

I have an original Microsoft Trackball Explorer, bought at Egghead Software in the 90s. It's worked great ever since then, but lately I've been having problems with the scroll wheel. Every so often the scrolling will go crazy for a few seconds, zooming down to the bottom of the page, or alternating up and down repeatedly. I really like it and I'd rather not replace it if I can manage it

.  I loved the Logitec at first, but the smaller size palm annoyed me after a few hours of play. I do prefer the larger palm grip on the Microsoft Mouse, but I must say.

When mine breaks I will miss it....

 This one has a really neat looking design. The ball instead of on the thumb is right here. You have one, two, and the scroll, three, four, and five buttons. Again these buttons are customizable, and the ball right here again which can be removed, and of course this one is optic as well, and on the bottom side again there is nothing really down here except some nice pads to really keep this firmly seated on your desktop
