 Alright, hello everyone, my name is Kit, welcome to another unboxing, this time of the Elacom Deft Pro Trackball Mouth. So here's what it looks like, it's the inside, description, and this is the side, back, the side, bottom, and top. Okay let's just open it, oh shit, uh, what the fuck? Okay there we go, alright here it is, and wow that is pretty big, oh wow this is pretty hefty, so okay multiple buttons here, let's just go through it, so we have buttons here, here, here, here, and is this a button? Oh it is, it's a switch, interesting, okay, and then on the bottom we have this, which I don't know what it is, something to pair, we have this, I think it's probably a holder for the dongle, then on the top here we have a function 1 button, a right button, and then a function 2 button, so there's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and then a switch, so 7 buttons and a switch, okay cool, we got our battery here, and then down below is a dongle, okay and I'm guessing this dongle can go right here, yep, okay so we got ourselves a USB micro, micro USB cable, and yeah this is what you use to charge it, I'm guessing, or maybe, maybe if you want to connect it wired, so for this, this is battery powered, using a AA battery, let's go ahead and put this in, okay cool, so yeah, there should be a manual somewhere inside here, okay so there's a bunch of words that I don't understand, but if you want the English version, just go on here, oh so it's in Japanese, I see, okay there's nothing else in the box, so yeah, that is basically it, so we got the cable, the mouse itself, and then the instruction manual, and for comparison, here is the Elacom Bitra, so significantly smaller, this is way bigger, wow, okay, interesting, okay, so this is the interesting, yeah so this one might be better for watching TV, I can use this as a TV mouse, this one is more like really heavy duty for using, for your normal workstation, alrighty, that's basically it, thanks for watching, have a good one, bye.

ELECOM Deft Pro Finger-Operated Trackball Mouse (M-DPT1MRXBK) - Unboxing

 Going back into the review, the Deft Pro is going to be very similar, in a sense, to the other Elacom product, the Elacom Huge. I say similar in that it does take a lot of design inspiration from the Microsoft Trackball Explorer, being that it is a finger-operated trackball with the left mouse button and most of the buttons located down here on the thumb cluster. Aside from that, the real difference is that the Deft Pro is going to be much more compact than the Elacom Huge. Now I did just recently review the Huge, so I will be drawing a lot of parallels to that

 Now the case of the Deft Pro is very similar to the Elacom Huge in the fact that it's not the highest quality plastic, like you would see with, say, an X-Key Zeltrack, but at the same time it's also not the worst quality plastic. It does have a pretty nice weight to it, there really isn't any echo, it's solid overall. It feels like a fairly premium product, not necessarily in line with the MX Ergo, but maybe just a slight step down. So again, nothing crazy here, but it also doesn't suck

 It's nothing crazy, but again, it's not the worst that I've seen in a trackball by any stretch of the imagination. Now, the ball itself is interesting. It's larger than a thumb-operated trackball, but it's not quite the same size as what the Elacom Huge had. I believe the Elacom Huge was at 52 millimeters, and I do believe that the Deft Pro is at 44 millimeters

 It feels like a fairly premium product, not necessarily in line with the MX Ergo, but maybe just a slight step down. So again, nothing crazy here, but it also doesn't suck. It's a perfectly usable trackball and it doesn't leave you feeling like you wasted your money, which is a good sign. So you'll notice that the top housing of the case is more of this kind of matte black textured finish to it

 I think there was a time when the Def Pro was really one of the only options you had for a compact MTE style trackball. But there are other options out there now, and it is just lacking in some of the basic necessities and the hand shape is very static and locks you in. And that wraps up today's review, everyone.  NONE.  I repeat NONE!!  The NEW wireless has super TINY roller bearings!!  However I had to switch to WIRELESS because I ran out of ports on my new M-1 iMac using Monterey OS.  SO here we are folks - a manufacturer who for whatever reason will not re-design to fix the problem.  Using Apple’s Magic Mouse physically hurts

  I don’t think you folks want to have me keep returning until a specific brand works. That would be 100% absurd.  BTW I have ditched their own Kensington Works software and am using “SteerMouse” software which eliminates a lot of minor glitches, a whole bunch as a matter of fact.  But, having to turn upside down problem remains

 I assure you I am a computer programmer by trade, so I am very capable. But Kensington is not!!  I could return it to you because I have until May 25 to do that … but I don’t want to because I physically like the Kensington. I just like the way it feels in my hand. It’s that simple

May 7, 2022  This is long, but worth every syllable … don’t give up until you get to the end of this email!  My Kensington Wireless Trackball with Scroll Ring - ordered from Amazon on 4/26/2022  I have been working with the Kensington Company Tech Support for 2 weeks.  A miserable 2 weeks because they have refused to solve the problem. I assure you I am a computer programmer by trade, so I am very capable. But Kensington is not!!  I could return it to you because I have until May 25 to do that … but I don’t want to because I physically like the Kensington

  Switching to another brand, eg Logitech, is iffy because the same problems may exist.  Among all your customer reviews, there is not 1 stand-out with 99% 5 stars - not 1.  I don’t think you folks want to have me keep returning until a specific brand works. That would be 100% absurd

3.5 Stars for Serious OH OH for Kensington wireless Trackball

  I will be looking to replace with either the Kensington Expert or the Logitech Cordless Trackball.

 Unfortunately after only 8 months of regular 4-6 hour a day use the right button is becoming "spongy". When clicked it actually sounds more muddied or spongy than the left button which still sounds a little crisper. The result is having to click 2-3 times to use the right button. Not good

 A lot of people say "it is plastic on plastic" as opposed to being on some more weighted complicated wheeled track. Basically, it is EXACTLY like any standard mouse wheel. Maybe they were thinking it would be a weighted, free flicking, heavier metal contraption on rails like scroll wheels on high quality mice like my Logitech G9 I use on my work computer. No such luck

 The size is right, the price is right, the features are right. Only downside is they could easily take a great concept and trick it out to make it even better. _____________________________________________________________________________  9 month update: I use the right button a lot since I am on a pc to bring up contextual menus all the time. The right button is used almost as much as the left

UPDATE:  I'm leaving my original review intact, but after using this trackball for a few months, I have decided I need to lower my rating and move on to another brand.  The reason why is because I have run into a whole host of inconsisency issues over time. I've used these track balls on three different computers, and I have run into problems with jittery cursor, laggy cursor, and spongy cursor.  The jittery cursor is extremely frustrating

  The thumb trackballs are a no go. My thumb isn't accurate enough to make any use of them, and after about an hour of frustrating attempted clicking into tiny little check boxes, I decided that wasn't going to be the answer.  I didn't understand why someone couldn't just make a trackball with a scroll wheel next to the ball. But I guess this Kensington model is the next best thin

Almost there

 We expect never to purchase another.  The corded Logitech Trackman Marble Mouse units that we have owned have proved much more durable than the Logitech Optical Trackman cordless mouse. And, though less sculpted to the hand than its cordless sibling, the Trackman Marble is very comfortable under the hand, and all-day use of the Trackman Marble is fatigue free. However, the Logitech Trackman Marble lacks a scroll wheel (although a secondary button can be programmed to make a jury-rigged scroll wheel emulator, the arrangement is not ergonomically successful)

  We use the big Kensingtom K64325 Expert Mouse trackball every day on one of our computers. It is a superb instrument, and its big ball makes precise location of the cursor on a big monitor very easy. Our corded K64325 has a scroll ring around the trackball that took less of a learning curve to become instinctive than I had guessed it would before we started to use it. "Big" is the operative word with the Expert Mouse, however: it takes a lot of desk space

 The cordless version of the Expert Mouse -- which we have not tried -- has a reputation of eating batteries like popcorn.  Which brings us to the product under review, the Kensington K72337 Orbit Scroll Ring trackball mouse. A corded mouse, the Orbit Scroll Ring combines the good qualities of the Logitech Trackman Marble and the scroll ring of the Kensington Expert Mouse in a compact package that is much more affordable than the Expert Mouse. The (blue) trackball of the Orbit Scroll Ring is the same size as the Logitech Trackman Marble's red one, and both are a size smaller than the (black) trackball of the Expert Mouse

Well designed trackball

Yes, it's a cheap mouse, and it also feels like a cheap mouse. Except that i've owned and used non-ergonomic mice at the same price point that felt higher quality so this feels like less value for my money. The buttons feel heavy which causes thumb pain for me, the scroll ring feels loose which means sometimes it doesn't actually scroll, and the wrist extension falls off whenever i move the mouse (because i do multiple activities at the same desk).  Here's my biggest issue with this design though

The trackball itself is easy to pop out and clean, but the three tiny balls that the trackball rolls on inside that cavity are really difficult to clean. Those three tiny balls collect grime very quickly and slow down the trackball

 It helps with the solid "feel" of the unit, but makes for extra tension in the hand if you use it for gaming, like myself. The shape is also a bit flat for me. This could be that I'm coming from a molded trackball design that arched way up to keep the natural curve of my hand, but the flatter curve of this unit is taking some getting used to for me. The included wrist support seemed solid, but lifted my hand too high up to use the unit comfortably

 This is not a large mouse, but it is a broad one, coming in far wider than most trackball mice I've seen before. This can be a negative, if you have very limited space (like me), but it's not SO large that it's crowding anything out. Just be warned. I was also surprised how SOLID this unit felt, it's really a well built Trackball, and gives the feeling right out of the box that it could stand up to your roughest gaming sessions

A solid, but imperfect, trackball

I purchased this because the price of a Logitech Trackball Marble Mouse was finally too high for me. Loaded easily via USB, set up was instant. Tracking is good. Problems: The first thing I noticed was that it's short (when measuring fingers toward wrist) - and the arc is pretty high, so your wrist is always bent at an uncomfortable angle

 The software isn't intrusive or awkward. The ergonomics make it easy to use for brief interactions with the computer as I work in a studio. I really like the scroll wheel. Since this device has Bluetooth AND the RF connection, I can connect it to my desktop and laptop and easily swap back and forth by just the switch on the bottom

 Unusable for me.  Logitech Ergo M575 - thumb-based trackball movement. Gave it a try and can't adjust to using my thumb for movement. Otherwise, a nice item

Finally a trackball that isn't thumb-based and actually works!  I was a user of the Logitech Trackman for years and loved it but that was discontinued and Logitech never replaced it with a finger-based trackball. So I've been trying different thumb-based trackballs ever since and only been disappointed.  This Orbit trackball is the closest to what I've been looking for. Great build quality

Closest thing to a Trackman available now

  The hand support is very comfy. The material is nice and the fact that it doesn't have a fixed coupling to the mouse allows me to place it in a misaligned position relative to the mouse, which, in my case, is handy.  Finally, the scroll wheel is awesome. Very silent, comfortable and with a high sensitivity

  The buttons are high quality, but they are a bit short for my hand, I need to use the mouse with an angle towards the keyboard to press the left button more easily with my thumb. If the buttons were a bit longer this wouldn't happen. The fact that this button is too short also makes it more difficult to press the left button while holding the ball.  The ball is a bit too light
