Edict (Gerber Gear) vs Spyderco Amalgam

No big deal. My issues are more with the manufacturing/quality control. The handle is a nice shape and has the same grippy plastic/rubber compound used on the strong arm (a superb knife), but the handle is super light and just doesn’t feel substantial. But the real problem is that in the rear of the handle, the hard plastic part is separated from the metal center by enough that I can clearly see daylight through that section of the handle (1/64”?)

One of the best features for my purposes is the extremely light weight of this very workmanlike and capable blade, along with the threaded inserts for positioning the pocket clip to the most favorable location on the scales. All in all, I would say that if you're looking for a knife that can do it all with style, the Amalgam is the one.

If I were to need it in a self defense situation, however, I'd start running before I even thought about it in my pocket. The spring bar mechanism they say helps it stay open also makes it hard to open from both a closed position and catches the blade at ~70 degree orientation from the handle. 4/5 for utility as its a great blade, but 2/5 for defense/emergencies.

People may argue with me, but the Spyderco Knives are the bombest knifes you can buy on that scale! I know there are custom nights out there that you can have made, but for a production run knife, Spyderco has to feel and the quality as far as I'm concerned, and are the best at that price point! I have several myself, I have to say the paramilitary 2 is my favorite! Thanks for sharing.

The rubber overmolded glass-filled nylon handle is firm, yet very grippy, and far too satisfying to work with. I think it should be noted that the fact that this knife has a very sturdy deep-carry pocket clip is just the icing on the cake. Never once has it fallen out of my pocket, even in the craziest of conditions and tasks. I am such a fan of this knife that I will be buying the newer bead-blasted variant for my father, as he is the one who introduced me to Gerber Legendary Blades so long ago

Spyderco Amalgam, the one I got was pretty awful. Poor ergonomics due to the wide but thin handle, gritty bearings, worst of all was the weak detent.

Their QC is slipping. That being said, this is a sturdy knife. Once I put an edge on it, I am very happy. Good to have a knife with a good feel in my paw

The only other downside is the blade will move side to side not loose but because the material the handle is made out of is somewhat flexible could be fixed with a metal reinforced handle but for keeping cost down it is acceptable. The handle you have to put some force in to get it to bend like I stated so not a huge deal. All in all I'm happy with the purchase and is a great deal for the under $100 mark just expect to have to sharpen it up a bit.
