By the time we reached the usual regroup spot 600 feet below the summit, the sun had risen but its warmth and rays were obscured by cloud. Wind pulsed out of the west, loading more snow onto our objective and so we opted to tone down the ambition and descend soft glades from the regroup spot.

Additionally, the Sintered HD bases weren’t as durable as I would hope. I’m coming out of the season with a handful of deep gouges that’s surprising for how few rocks I remember encountering.

Similarly, I often found that if I got lazy and popped into the backseat ever so slightly, the arcing turns became unmanageably long and it was all too easy to feel like the ski was running away from me. Some degree of diligence was required to keep my weight centered and my body actively working the skis. Unlike some skis (the Cassiars, for instance) the M-Tours aren’t so forgiving if you get sloppy. The performance rewards are worth it though for skiing well

But this 186 here does generate a 22 meter turn radius, so it is a pretty straighter cut, happy to go fast, happy to take a straight aggressive line down the mountain, and pretty stiff through the tail thanks to that additional material here over the tail

 We've got a Dynastar M-Tour 99 for you today.

 This ski is unchanged from last year, really is a fantastic option for those skiers that

 spend most of their time in the backcountry, but also still want that performance that

 So this thing shares a lot of similar shapes with the M-Pro 99, a little bit different

 So they use their Pallonia hybrid wood core.

 So that central cord of the ski is made from a lightweight Pallonia wood, and then they

 use a polyurethane material on the sides, extending in from the sidewall further than

 So that material gives the ski just an incredible amount of stability and smoothness, isn't

 terribly heavy, but is very damp as well.

 The ski does not get the titanal rocket frame that the M-Pro gets, it still has that shaping

 So there is additional material in there.

The Nordica Santa Ana 98 is the type of ski you could buy, throw in the rooftop box, and not have to worry about having enough space for the rest of your stuff. Instead of having to pack a ski for groomers and a ski for powder days, the Nordica provides you with an all-in-one option. The Santa Ana 98 performed particularly well in the crud, staying stiff enough to punch through anything the mountain threw at it. It also floats well in powder, feels stable at high speeds, can carve a mean arc, and pivots easily around a mogul field.
While we appreciated the reliability of this ski, we didn't experience any wow-factor and didn't feel a lot of rebound or responsiveness under our feet. That said, it took us everywhere we wanted to go at the resort and handled every snow condition, so there's something to be said for dependability. If you don't need something to excite you and want a single ski that can do everything well, the Santa Ana 98 is your match made in heaven.
