Hi, I’m a beginner backpacker doing some research on new gear. I’m used to backpacking in groups of 5-10 and sharing big tents (as well as the tent gear load) but in the future I would like to go solo.

What are some decent but affordable one to two person tents? I’m looking for something small enough for just me to sleep in without being cold, as my 2 person north face tent doesn’t cut it when it comes to me warming it up all by myself. It would have to be lightweight and compact enough for me to carry all by myself. Easy set up and tear down is preferred but not required. It would be a 3 season tent because I avoid snowy conditions as much as possible and I sleep with a down sleeping bag that’s rated for 20F, but it still gets pretty chilly up in the mountains and I wouldn’t be surprised if it dipped a bit below freezing on my journey.

For price range let’s say the very top of my limit is $600. Of course keeping it to a midrange of $150-$450 would be preferred, but I also wouldn’t be opposed to saving for a quality tent that maybe goes for $100ish more than my top limit if it would last me many many years. Not looking to buy right now but would like to get something I could reasonably save for within a year or two

 And then this is the clip that I mentioned at the bottom. So this little plastic clip as obviously when you're doing the zip. If you leave that clip, it's going to reduce the tension on here. Just unclip it and then you can roll the door up

 Luckily the rumors were true. Dan did design and come up with the solid inner. So now um, now we've got the solid and I've grabbed that um on my scales. and on the website it's exactly 905 grams which is a refreshing change

 I've put a little bit of shot card on there. Um, so it can flex under reel a heavy load. Um, I'll deploy these pretty much all the time. You've got a vent, so if it's raining and you want a bit more ventilation, you can raise it up on the line lock so it sits slightly highly to get a bit of airflow underneath

 If you leave that clip, it's going to reduce the tension on here. Just unclip it and then you can roll the door up. Like I said before, if you peg the door side out, you might have to just pop your elastic off if you're using this door. So we'll get this out of the way now and then roll this door up

I love the weight of this tent. I could carry it for weeks I'm sure. However, I cannot, with my old joints, deal with the very tight mitten clips and other connections. It took some practice to set up but went quickly once I got the hang of it

I've tried to look into what items people recommend on various outdoor sites, but the top 3 are usually always super expensive or niche products. I would thus like to hear what items you guys would recommend.

In general I have the following criteria:

* I usually only camp during the spring, summer and autumn. So temperature at the lowest is 5 degrees C but mostly around 10-20 degrees C.
* I'm not super strict on weight requirements, but I am willing to pay a bit more if the items is significantly lighter than the alternative.
* Packing size is a pretty big deal since I usually carry everything on my back.
* My budget doesn't allow me to buy the best of the best, but I am looking for items in the upper end of the spectrum.

General budget pr item:

* Sleeping Pad: 200 USD (+/- 50 USD)
* Sleeping bag / quilt: 200 USD  (+/- 100 USD)
* Tent (2-persons, double walled): 600 USD  (+/- 100 USD)

Extra info:

* I'm 170 cm tall (5'7")
* I'm from Scandinavia and thus don't have access to certain US brands

 So first of all, this tent is made out of very high quality materials. It's made out of still polyester, which means it's less saggy when it gets wet. It's got high quality zippers. It's got extra guidelines for when it gets windy

 Really nice overhead pockets. It's got good stitching. Everything is seam proof. the grommets are very robust and overall I've had no issues with the materials of this tent

Dan Durston X-Mid 1P Long Term Review

 I am going to chalk that up to luck. However, it is more durable than the X-Drop. I think overall this is a good tent and will be doing some more field testing soon. Also, moving forward I am going to be more cautious

 You need a ground sheet. I know this because there is a hole in my brand new tent. On the way home I stopped by REI and got some tenuous tape and the issue is resolved for now. Also, I ordered a pre-cut piece of Tyvek that will be here sometime this week

Overall Pleased

 To that I would say that it's right on par with most other ultralight 2 person backpacking tents, and you don't need to find the perfect site for the entire tent: you just need to find a good spot that fits the interior. The height of either end can be adjusted by changing the trekking pole length, allowing you to pitch on uneven terrain. I've spent 3 nights in it so far, with my 85 lb dog, in below freezing temps, wind, and rain, and it has held up like a rock.  Overall, this is THE best backpacking tent I've ever owned

Plus, depending on where you live, this could be the worst time of year to be testing a tent.  I live near Houston, and with all of the rain and humidity we are getting, any tent is just a good way to condense water and collect it.

What have I done? Any advice welcome on this condensation catcher I just bought?

 I bought a six moon designs. I'M reading this 124 centimeter or 49 inch carbon fiber pole, and if you watched my hike uh to foster brook, i pointed it out in that video specifically uh be, and i explained that this is why i i bought the carbon fiber pool. What does it add? It adds 51 grams to my gear, loadout, that's 1.8 ounces and it folds to 44, centimeters or 17 and a half inches fits easily in your backpack um, all right back to the aeon lithium from tarp tint, the aeon lithium is 490 grams or 17

 Take you around the back and show you one more thing and i'll give you a little tour of some of the technology. That'S in this tent. Obviously, it's a single person dyneema composite fiber. This is where your other tent pole goes, and you can see that just try to get this in the ground here

 What i like about this is the tarp kit includes six easton, very lightweight tent pegs. They come with the tent, so the weight of the tent includes the tent pegs. When you look at it all um gon na watch that online right, i tend to use carbon fiber from z, packs uh. These are 6

Tarptent Aeon Li - A "Non" Review

White out fog and rain, probably in the 50s, overall huge bummer of a last day. I’d been really looking forward to the Kendall Katwalk and all I saw was white and I was soaked by the mist and rain. At least it was a quick downhill jaunt into town where my ride was waiting. 

 I met several people who started at Steheken, which was my backup plan. From Snoqualmie there are shuttles to Seattle but I had family pick me up. 

Incredible views of Escondido Ridge, Summit Chief and some nice glaciers. Went through some bigger burn patches but overall nice trail. Was hoping to stay at Spectacle Lake for one last swim but as the afternoon wore on temperatures dropped and a cloud rolled in. Decided to head to Park Lakes instead for a faster hike to Snoqualmie the following day

 Beautiful day, sunny with a nice downhill walk the whole way. Checked out the new pedestrian bridge they put up over Bridge Creek – solid work. Got to North Fork around 6 after taking a few side trips and stopping to chat. We both put up our little UL shelters and talked gear and I tried her 1/8" pad

Get some z-packs vertice rain pants. They are less than 3oz and they will block wind and bugs when needed. 

Overall, you can hike with what you have right now, and you’d be fine. You’ve obviously dialed in your kit (other than your clothes), so you can drop stuff as you go.

Ditch your camp shirt. Either use your hiking shirt (true UL) or incorporate a long sleeve insulating layer, like 150 merino wool, as a sleep system or hiking system item.

How tall are you? You should replace your tent and buy a DCF tent that pairs with your trekking pole or poles. If you’re 6’4”, get a tarp tent Aeon Li. If you’re less than that, get a z-packs duplex, tarp tent double rainbow, or something else.

PCT starting May 10th at Campo. Heading NOBO to the Canadian boarder.

**Goal Baseweight (BPW):**

I don't really have one, just looking to cut down as much weight as possible within my price range.

* I've heard that some people have durability issues with the CNOC Vecto 2L, I've used it on a few short trips and it has worked great but I'd appreciate feedback from someone with more experience.
* For backpacks I'm debating between the Osprey Exos 48 and the Osprey Levity 45. I've used an Osprey backpack for a long time and have loved their fit and warranty. I'm open to non-Osprey suggestions though.
* I'm going to use a long sleeve hiking shirt in the desert for sun protection but I'm not sure about how to best protect my legs. Wind pants maybe?
* This is my first thru hike and I'd appreciate any advice you can give me.

 So it's a little-bitty feature, but it is so much nicer just to be able to roll that door back and slap the magnet into place. Now I kind of wish that they would have done that going all the way down the door. So another thing that tarp tent added to their storm door was something that I'm honestly not a big fan of, and that is velcro now, with these tension, tents and those vestibule doors. Typically, they lay over top of each other and they stay there because of the tension on the front
