 I think we're shooting a 4k I'll zoom in this pedal is really really important not just in my writing but also in my relationship with this pedal It was and still is one of the greatest delay pedals I had ever heard or played but the thing that I really fell in love with on this pedal was the pitch shifting options and they Weren't designed as such necessarily But with an analog delay like a real analog delay like this when you are tapping in your tempo You're getting those same pitch change warbles that you would get if you were messing with a time knob on any other delay And I figured out that you could tap in a tempo on dotted eighth mode Click over to the eighth mode and back again to create this really cool In key pitch shifting effect using the repeats of the tonal recall and I fell in love with this I was absolutely obsessed. I think I shot a video on my cell phone and sent it to Joel and the guys at chase bliss I made a video on my Instagram with it I have since made probably three different videos using that exact effect on this exact pedal and I was totally in love with it And I was sending emails to chase bliss trying to figure out how to make those effects Easier and how to make it a more seamless thing that I could maybe do in a live scenario I got a fave switch a fave switch Specifically so that I could try and do those pitch shifts in a live context using these two tools. I was totally smitten I wrote parts around that I developed play styles around that. It was just the most inspiring sound I had gotten out of a pedal that didn't feel like it was the original intent of the pedal and that felt really special Thurmae took those effects those those jumps those those glitchy pitch shifting Totally warm beautiful things and it expands on it and it makes it much more than what it was originally capable of And it does it in a way that is much more capable and complex than what the tonal recall could do by itself The tonal recall I basically had one musical pitch option and any other pitch shifts kind of went out of key pretty quickly This pedal is dialed in these jumps feel pristine and accurate and gorgeous And not only that but the ability to control when how and where those jumps happen Really opens up a lot of possibilities

 So let's talk about some of my favorite settings and features with this thing number one Step mode step mode on this thing allows you to play your traditional delay line and have it stay at your main pitch until you hit your tap tempo button at which point you will step to the next interval and it's just it's the best for Controlled pitch shifting. It's the best for Playing a part letting it breathe and then adding color to it afterwards. It's this really cool Surprising thing that can be done subtly or wildly but it's a great effect in either way number two is slow mode by holding both buttons down you can actually set it so that it Moves between your intervals at half the speed that it originally would have the third thing about this pedal What's really interesting to me is how good it is as just a regular delay if you set your intervals At off on both of them. You just are left with one of the best sounding Analog delays on the planet I think that's not only due to how good the chips are in here and how great this pedal was as an engineering feat but The low pass filter the LPF in this top middle position is your tone control and it is The best sounding tone control of any pedal I've ever played

 I think that's everything. So yeah, let's let's jump into some clips We're gonna we're gonna go through some of the settings.  This is the Chase Bliss Audio Thermae, and it's absurdly good. Here's how it sounds. So now that you've heard some sounds, I'm going to tell you what the Thermae is, how it works, and why I love it, and subsequently think it's absurdly good. I'll start with a brief overview of how the pedal works

 We've got our time, we've got repeats, mix level, a filter control, a grit control for adding dirt to the actual delay repeats. Then we've got speed and depth for our modulations for things like tape delays or actually just generally modulating any of our delay sounds. Now in terms of the sound quality it's 24 bit, 96 kilohertz and features a super powerful shark DSP. The same DSP you'll find in all the flagship digital units on the market

 We can also run a few different setups here in terms of running it stereo. You can have like a feedback loop setup as well if you want to do that. Strymon Timeline Delay Review

 So the Strymon timeline, I don't know why I've not really thought of it until now, now that it's here it makes a lot of sense. So I just wanted to talk about a few ways that I'm thinking that this might be ideal to add to my HX Stomp and why I'm considering that as an option and why I'm talking about it anyway. So hopefully in the intro there you would have heard some of my kind of first playing through a Strymon timeline, I've uploaded a video already this morning which is my literal first experiences with it and I'm finding it really easy to use. Strymon come from, I think they have a lineage shared with Line 6 and I think it's fair to say that the timeline and the DL4, one of Line 6 is probably the pedal that you might have seen of theirs the most on pros boards and all that stuff, share quite a bit in common I think and you can sort of see the lineage there

 Right, anyway, so I'm nine years late to the orgy or the football match basically and the Strymon timeline, I got it yesterday, I bought one secondhand because I was just like well I've never played one of these and I feel like I'm very late to the party and everyone's already in on this but you know I've got it and this channel is mostly about trying to find things that inspire me and share experience with those people who are interested in that sort of stuff anyway. If you've seen my channel before you probably know that I use quite a bit of the Line6 Helix-y stuff, the HX Stomp is where I'm at quite a lot of the time and when I had gigs that would be what I was using if I couldn't take an amp you know for instance if I was taking an entire PA for a wedding gig or whatever I would take the HX Stomp on a little board and just run direct with that and then that enabled me to be able to run out front of house and do sound and you know fit PA in the car and all that sort of stuff. So that's kind of where I'm at use-wise with the HX Stomp and I have it set up to have three snapshots, a clean, a solo and a rhythm and I'd set up a delay on an expression pedal. At home in the studio, is this a studio, it's a bedroom let's be honest, I use the HX Stomp and the Helix all the time for all sorts of stuff, recording you know doing demos of bits and pieces you know trying to come up with interesting sounding patches that inspire me to play guitar

Just a quick note to say why I'm not putting it in the loop, any time you do use the effects loop on a Helix or an HX Stomp or any other device you effectively introduce a bit more latency because you're doing an analog to digital conversion, unless you need to have it in the loop like there's no reason for me to put a delay and looper in the loop so I'm putting it post the HX Stomp and that's kind of a trick that I've learnt from the Strymon Iridium, I can't really think of a reason that I would want the timeline anywhere but after the HX Stomp in the way that I use it

Should you buy a Strymon Timeline in 2021?

In terms of features and quality, however, it is easily outmatched by newer players like Boss's DD-500 or the Empress Echosystem, which can do things that simply aren't possible on a Timeline - such as custom pattern delays, two independent delay engines, adding in reverb etc. Strymon were once at the forefront of digital pedal technology too, using the SHARC DSP chips that are popular with other audio brands like Universal Audio, but this is now decade-old technology that is either surpassed or far more cheaply available.

I’ll start off by saying that I’m far from a professional musician and while I’ve been playing for about 20 years, it was only the last few I got into pedals. 

That being said, I see so many boards on here with Strymon pedals. And I’m not going to doubt their quality and performance, but as a lay player it is hard to justify the cost. I definitely get pedal envy seeing el cap’s, volante’s, and flint’s. 

Are they truly that much better than more affordable pedals that do the same thing?  

 $299+ is just so dang much and I feel like I can get multiple high quality pedals vs just one.

Are Styrmon pedals with it?

 In this case, this box sounds very uninspiring. The best way to describe it is shrill and lacking any type of luster. This would be good for someone looking for a harsh bit crusher type of digital effect in a delay unit.

It's a software digital delay plug-in in a box except that it sounds terrible. Perhaps it is the A/D converters? Even when bypassed, there is a huge drop in tone. The construction quality feels good on the outside but it must be terrible in the inside because it sounds very weak and brittle. The screen is hard to read in any lighting condition and the switches don't always click
