  One issue, which is why 4 stars. While this lens is significantly shorter than the others, weight is about the same. It also feels a small bit wider, making it a lot to handhold (and I've got fairly large hands for a girl). I feel like if you had really small hands this might be a lot to deal with

I didn't want to like this lens as much as I do (because $$!). This focal range is my favorite and my go-to for just about everything. I've owned both Canon and Tamron EF, and for a long time my preference was my Tamron. At almost 1/3 the price, it was hard to beat

The media could not be loaded. The Canon 2.8 series has always been a goal of mine to own, but never really bought into it until I got the Canon RP and now, I have felt like I have missed out. The lens comes with a variable zoom length switch and three different options on the image stabilization

  Would I recommend: Yes, I would absolutely recommend the lens, but I can only say four stars because at $2699 Canon should make sure that everything is perfect with the lens.

 Canon did choose to vary the filter size from the other 2.8s to a 77mm.  Issues: I have only one issue with the lens, other than price (but you know that going in), and that is the filter size. I wish that Canon would have kept it at the 82mm like the other 2

A couple of minor things

 So shooting handheld for about two or three hours, massive difference from what it's like to shoot with the EF version. So I generally shoot with the EF version on the front of the 1DX and admittedly I did have the battery grip on the EOS R as well. But when I shoot with the EF version after about two or three hours, especially with handheld video, I'll generally, my shoulders are starting to ache a little bit whereas with this it was absolutely no problem whether I was shooting video, photo, it was significantly lighter and I was able to just go much much longer. Now I took a number of images, I was mostly in one location so mostly wildlife and a bit of landscape and then headed out to the hills where I could get a little bit more of a different landscape but I was really happy with the image quality

 It feels like Canon definitely wanted to make this a smaller lighter lens which seems to be why they've gone with this design rather than having an internal zoom but I'm aware that's definitely going to be a point of concern for some people. Otherwise the lens actually felt really good to shoot with, it feels like a pro lens, you know the zoom ring that kind of thing feel good, they're weighted really well and of course you've got the control ring on there as well much like the other RF lenses which means that you can actually map that to things like ISO, aperture and various controls like that so there's a bit of customisation there into how you actually want to shoot. This lens of course completes the trinity of zoom lenses that pretty much all photographers and videographers to be honest want to have in their kit so you've got the 15 to 35, you've got the 24 to 70 and now of course you've got the 70 to 200, all native lenses, all nice and fast at f2.8 and all image stabilised as well

 So I took these all hand held, they're completely hand held, I wanted to test that out because I use the EF version quite a lot for video, I tend to shoot completely hand held but I like the look of the stuff you can get so because of the length of the lens you can get nice cinematic looking stuff, nice shots for b-roll, I think it looks great and I wanted to make sure that would be the case here. Now I tend to shoot hand held because I'm out kind of running and gunning a shoot, I don't want to set up loads of stuff or a gimbal or anything like that. These video clips are shot completely hand held, it's zoomed all the way to 200mm and then I'm shooting 4K which actually gives a bit of a crop again so it's actually cropped even further. Now normally the further you zoom the harder it is to shoot hand held because any tiny movement in the camera is going to be kind of magnified and made much more obvious which is actually why I wanted to shoot at 200mm, I wanted to really give that image stabilisation a proper test

 The images are nice and sharp, the lens performs really well there, it's a nice and fast lens as well so you can actually get some bokeh in there when you're shooting wide open at f2.8. I think the bokeh looks really good, I think it's nice and smooth and of course the colours, the colours look great as you'd expect from a Canon but the reproduction with this lens looks fantastic. In that sense I thought this lens handled particularly well and with the EOS R with its ability to handle higher ISOs and stuff like that, this is going to be a great lens for anyone looking to shoot in lower light situations as well

 Manual focusing had a very tiny threshold of clear but it still didn’t seem very sharp. And auto focus would catch the eye, but when you zoom in, it’s just blurry and not sharp at all. Going to return it and stick with my 85mm, I mostly do portraits and car photos. Pretty disappointed in the quality, from the videos I’ve seen online, must just be advertising

 Side benefits - often mentioned at the very beginning of a technical review - are size and weight. Much more compact and lighter than the EF counterpart, it makes easier, simpler and more pleasant to shoot for long periods.

Super sharp, compact, versatile, and ... great tactile feeling

 Like the RF 50 and 85, the 70-200 is tack sharp, even wide open. Being a telephoto lens, it allows for gorgeous compression and beautiful autofocus rendering. Images have plenty of contrast and detail. I don't have any complaints about optics

 And I was happy to learn that it's not absurdly heavy either. Oh, and it actually balances okay on my R6. The lens is made of high quality plastic and metal, and it feels very premium. I would say that the lens is of a size and weight that make it reasonably comfortable to take with you on pretty much any job

 I've never liked 70-200mm lenses. They've always felt a bit too bulky, too difficult to use, too tough to nail focus. Even though I've shot professional stage events for years at this point, I can count on one hand the number of times I've used zoom lenses. I've always seen them as tools necessary to accomplish a particular job, but it was instilled in me early on that primes are king when it comes to portraiture and creativity in photography

Our D40X is NOT compatible with this lens in spite of Nikon saying it is. Battery life is extremely short due to the power demands of this huge lens and our camera now has mechanical/electrical failure to the shutter system (from which several attempts to repair have resulted in initial success but ultimately in failure.)  I was using my 300mm f/4D AF-S plus Nikon 1.4TCII, which got me to 420mm at f/5.6. This combo works really well due to sharpness, light weight, smaller size and good reach

4TC II (which holds up really well though it was first announced in 2001!), but plan on buying the 1.4TC III for improved focus, optics and VR with this lens. The TC brings you to 700mm at f/8. I was getting sharp results on subjects that were moving slower, but for flying birds it didn't quite work out

This Nikon 200-500mm lens fits a special niche to complement my assortment of other shorter telephotos. For the price, the lens sharpness is on par with much more expensive prime telephotos.  But if starting at 200mm is a needed minimum, then this 200-500mm is the best price performance without adding another digit to the price tag.

Best price performance for a long Nikon telephoto

As a person that enjoys photographing birds I have been waiting for this lens for many years. I have been using the Nikon 300 f4 for years with a 1.4 to shoot birds but it was never flexible enough for me. This lens focuses very quickly and I've found it to have great picture quality

 I am just thrilled at the potential of this on my D7100. The only issue, that was not a surprise is it is heavy. I actually pulled a muscle in my neck while out shooting with this monster. Bring a tripod or monopod while using it

Great bird lens if you don't wish to spend $$$$$$

 Mercy, it adds some weight. I went through the steps of calibrating the lens to my body which took a bit longer than I thought it might and found it to be a “+9”. Anything over +/- 12 and it goes back for a replacement. After that, I went outside and learned the limits and expectations
