 Stop down to f11 to see even brightness across the image frame. Alright, let's take a look at close-up image quality now. Zoom in to 400mm, and the lens can focus as closely as 1m, treating you to some spectacular, almost macro photography images. Image quality at that close distance though is just okay, at both f8 or f11

 Okay, let's turn in-camera corrections off and look at distortion and vignetting. At 100mm, we see some noticeable pincushion distortion and darker corners at f5.6. Stop down to f8 or f11 though, and those corners quickly brighten up

 But if you can live with that, then a host of benefits will be your reward.  And even though it is stupid windy, I'm going to try to get some pictures of some birds today. I was going to take you guys with me around the lake and vlog in my kind of typical fashion and kind of walk you through what I'm doing and what I think of this out in the field but it's just too windy. Right off the bat I can tell you that this R5 with the 100-400 and the teleconverter feels about the same weight, maybe even lighter than the 500 with the 2x on it which that's interesting. The 1-400 alone without the teleconverter is by far the lightest telephoto lens that I've ever used and so far I'm not going to make like any profound statements or anything but so far I'm preliminarily feeling like this could become my number one recommendation for budget-friendly intro wildlife lens

 It's something that you could do and you can get okay results again, if you understand the limitations and the abilities of a teleconverter. But just do know that you can get teleconverters. They both work for this, for the one to 400. The different, the other thing to consider though, is those teleconverters, the RF teleconverters are expensive

 You know, you're talking like they're almost the same price as this lens, you know, four or five, $600 is what you're looking at. And that's, you know, that's the majority of what this lens costs. So and for that price, just get this. You know, this is my 800

CANON RF 100-400 For WILDLIFE & LANDSCAPE Photography: Is It TOO CHEAP To Be Any Good?

 Update 10/17/22 Compared side by side on R7 with a Sigma 100-400 C using a canon adapter. The Sigma was the sharpest 400mm zoom i had ever used and the RF 100-400 edges it out (i'm a bit surprized by this result) See side by side comparison on R7 @ 400 mm.

62lbs it's an absolute beast to carry around and I wanted something that was lighter. I decided to take a chance on this lens because the RF glass is so darn good and it weighs less than 1/2 what my EF100-400 does.  I've had a chance now to put this lens through it's paces, and as far as I can tell my copy is even sharper than my old EF100-400! That's saying a LOT since that lens is one of the sharpest EF lenses Canon has ever produced! The IS works great, the lens is nearly silent, and it's about the same size as my 24-105. Focus is fast and spot-on

  I've had a chance now to put this lens through it's paces, and as far as I can tell my copy is even sharper than my old EF100-400! The lens capture sharp image, with ISO set as auto, the EOS RP camera can capture good picture at dusk without a chance of failure.  So here's my side-on test view of Brighton Pier from about 200m away, with the camera angled so that details run into the corners. And now at 400mm where again there's essentially no breathing so again no change in magnification as you focus. This is good news for anyone using the lens for videography or indeed when manually focusing stills especially in a magnified view. The lens also appeared to be mostly parfocal in my tests meaning it didn't change focus as you zoom through the range so all in all very well behaved in these regards

You will likely be happy with this lens as long as you have a more modern and powerful camera body to attach it to. Our D40X is NOT compatible with this lens in spite of Nikon saying it is.  I was using my 300mm f/4D AF-S plus Nikon 1.4TCII, which got me to 420mm at f/5.6. This combo works really well due to sharpness, light weight, smaller size and good reach

4TC II (which holds up really well though it was first announced in 2001!), but plan on buying the 1.4TC III for improved focus, optics and VR with this lens. The TC brings you to 700mm at f/8. I was getting sharp results on subjects that were moving slower, but for flying birds it didn't quite work out

 Being able to focus on subjects close or far away and being able to zoom in or out is also a bonus.  I shoot a lot of wildlife, birds in flight, surfing and so on, and needed a longer lens. I was using my 300mm f/4D AF-S plus Nikon 1.4TCII, which got me to 420mm at f/5

 That being said, I'm shooting with the D750 which is full frame, so I've always wanted just a little more reach than that and something I didn't need a TC for.  I was looking at the new Tamron 150-600mm G2 and this Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6VR. I decided to go down to Sammy's Camera to give them both a try to see which one I'd like better

This Nikon 200-500mm lens fits a special niche to complement my assortment of other shorter telephotos. For the price, the lens sharpness is on par with much more expensive prime telephotos. The constant f/5.6 aperture is great when zooming out to 500mm without losing another stop of light and slower shutter speeds, especially for outdoor sports or birding

As a person that enjoys photographing birds I have been waiting for this lens for many years. I have been using the Nikon 300 f4 for years with a 1.4 to shoot birds but it was never flexible enough for me. This lens focuses very quickly and I've found it to have great picture quality
