The Canon EOS Rebel SL3 is one of the best budget DSLRs you can get and is one of the most portable ones. Designed to be small and light relative to other DSLRs, it's super easy to take on the go. Its simple control layout is accessible to newcomers, and it has a fully articulated touchscreen to help you shoot at different angles. It also uses the same APS-C sensor found in the Canon EOS Rebel T8i, so image and video quality is comparable. You just get a much more rudimentary autofocus system.

If you're completely new to photography, consider the Nikon D3500. Nikon's ultimate beginner camera is even more stripped down than the SL3, with no articulated screen and no 4k video capability. However, it has a unique 'Guide' shooting mode that teaches you the ropes as you shoot. If you've never used a dedicated camera before, it's an excellent starter, but if you want a budget model with even more features, the SL3 is the way to go.

While DSLRs aren't exactly known for their portability, especially with mirrorless cameras on the block, you can still get some pretty portable DSLRs with plenty of features. The Canon EOS Rebel SL3 is part of Canon's entry-level SL series, which is designed to be as compact as possible. While it's about the same size as the Nikon D3500 mentioned above, the Rebel SL3 gives you more features but doesn't have a dedicated 'Guide' mode.

It does have a fully articulated screen, a fairly intuitive control scheme and menu, and can even record 4k video. And while its AF system isn't the most advanced, it still does an okay job tracking moving subjects. It also uses the same sensor as the Canon EOS Rebel T8i, so you'll get great image quality. Ultimately, it's a great choice if you want something portable with a little more oomph than the D3500. The D3500 is still the beginner king for those who want a camera that also acts as a hands-on learning tool.

The best DSLR camera that we've tested for those on a budget is the Canon EOS Rebel SL3. This entry-level DSLR is smaller and lighter than other crop-sensor DSLRs in Canon's lineup, making it easier to carry around for extended shooting sessions. Despite its relatively compact size, its controls are well-spaced out, and you should find it comfortable to use even if you have large hands. Its fully-articulated touchscreen is also a rarity for a DSLR at this price point, making it a little easier to compose shots taken from unconventional angles.

This camera's 24.1 MP sensor helps it deliver decent JPEG and RAW image quality out-of-the-box, with an impressively broad dynamic range at base ISO. You might notice more noise and a loss in sharpness as you increase ISO in darker environments. Its autofocus system does a good job tracking moving objects in still photography and offers exceptional performance when shooting FHD video. There's also a wide assortment of inputs and outputs for various accessories, including headphone and microphone jacks, a micro-USB port, and an HDMI port, as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity for pairing the camera with your smartphone.

Unfortunately, while this camera's 4k recording capability is also somewhat unique for a camera of this type, it isn't especially well-suited to recording in this resolution. It can only shoot 4k video at 24 fps with a severe 1.54x crop, and its autofocus system can struggle to track moving subjects. Its slow sensor readout speed also contributes to a significant amount of rolling shutter effect when panning side to side, distorting your subjects. Still, if you're looking for a compact, easy-to-use DSLR that's well-suited for on-the-go photography, it's a good option.

If you want to record videos, the best DSLR camera for beginners is the Canon EOS Rebel SL3. This crop-sensor DSLR delivers decent FHD video quality out-of-the-box, particularly in well-lit environments. Its autofocus system does an exceptionally good job of tracking moving subjects in FHD, even as they move in and out of frame.

This camera has an exceptionally intuitive menu system that you can easily navigate with either its physical controls or by tapping on its sharp, bright, fully-articulated touchscreen. There's even a guide mode to explain some core features. The camera itself is comfortable to use for extended periods thanks to its large handgrip and relatively lightweight, compact construction. It also has a wide variety of ports and inputs, with a dedicated microphone and headphone jacks and a clean HDMI feature for using an external recorder without any overlays getting in the way.

Unfortunately, this camera's video recording capabilities are notably inferior when shooting in 4k. It can only record this resolution at 24 fps with a severe 1.54x reduction in the field of view. Autofocus and video stabilization performance are poor compared to when the camera is recording in FHD. Still, the camera's relatively compact size, fully articulated touchscreen, and decent video quality in FHD help make it one of the best DSLR cameras that we've tested.

For the type of video you're doing, I prefer the Canon. The autofocus is smoother and you can scrub footage to review it, which is really important. The Sony has weird old VCR-style controls to review footage and it means sometimes I don't catch problems I need to know about soon enough to refilm.

These are my two options.. Say A or B...

Going to buy my first camera tomorrow.

 I couldn't have gotten as far as I have without watching MANY Youtube reviews and hints/tricks videos that make it much easier to understand how to use the MANY features of this camera. The battery life is long and I have shot all day and never run out of battery. I don't like that 4K video is so cropped but I just stand farther back and it is OK. Also, the audio levels will show on the lcd screen but you have to go into the settings and take it off of Auto and put it in Manual to get it to work, it should be on by default Canon! The 9-point AF works great for moving objects (like planes) and I don't know why people complain that it is not enough

 Love the fact that I can use legacy Canon lenses or the newest, as my budget allows. I got the 18-55 STM kit lens and it is a fine starter lens, especially for video (wide angle since the camera crops, especially with 4K video), it's silent, fast and relatively accurate. I also got a "nifty fifty" prime Canon 50mm lens that is Super for portraits and just to walk around with taking photos. I also got a Canon EF-S 55-250mm STM lens for excellent shots of RC planes in the air far away

 Also no 24fps in Full HD mode. Still a great value for the money. Pic quality is super. Love viewfinder for photos but won’t work for videos

 known in North America. The 250D as I'll refer to it in this review is a compact DSLR aimed at

 photographers or vloggers buying their first interchangeable lens camera but we want to start

 with a step up from entry-level models. The kit costs 599 pounds or 649 US dollars and that gets

 you a small but well-featured DSLR with a 24 megapixel APS-C sensor, the choice of using an

 optical viewfinder or a fully articulated touch screen, 1080p movies with great autofocus, 4k

 video with less good focus, wi-fi with bluetooth, a microphone input and the EFS 18 to 55 millimeter

 f4 to 5.6 STM zoom and that's the lens that I've used for most of my tests in this video.

 The 250D is the successor to the EOS 200D or Rebel SL2 with the main difference being the

 latest digik8 processor which had support for 4k video and eye detection in live view both of which

 I'll talk about later in the video. The 250D is equipped with the same 24 megapixel APS-C sensor

 as its predecessor which employs Canon's excellent dual pixel CMOS autofocus for movies in live view

 allowing it to smoothly and confidently refocus at least for movies when you're filming in 1080p.

 Like all Canon bodies to date there's no sensor stabilization with the 250D instead relying on

 optically stabilized lenses to iron out any wobbles. If you're filming video though you can

 apply optional digital stabilization but at the cost of cropping the image. You can see this in

 action in my separate video all about vlogging with the 250D or SL3 so check that out if you're

 going to be using it for vlogging. It's easy to gloss over the lens mount on a budget DSLR but

 Canon's EF mount gives the 250D access to one of the largest lens catalogs around which crucially

 employs an optical viewfinder and when using it the camera is limited to a basic 9-point

 autofocus system. The major benefit of an optical viewfinder over an electronic one is low battery

 consumption which allows the 250D to shoot up to 1,000 images per charge. That's roughly three times

 more than when using the screen in live view but unlike electronic viewfinders on mirrorless

 cameras you won't be enjoying face or eye detection across the frame, the chance to preview
