The bivy was nice because it adds a bit of warmth, cuts drafts and kept my quilts (I used two, one on top of the other) in order. That said, I'm thinking of getting a solid liner for my TarpTent stratospire just so I have have a larger totally dry and protected from snow and wind area.

Sort of new to the ultralight game as I got into bikepacking and have been trying to cut down the pack size and weight of my gear. I've changed a few things since (moving from JetBoil stove to pocket rocket, heavy REI sleeping pad to Nemo Tensor, and plan to trade an old marmot sleeping bag for a lightweight quilt soon) and have explored bivys a little but am not sure that the weight differential will be significant enough.

I currently have a Nemo Hornet 2P. I believe my model year totals 2 lbs, 3 oz. I've seen a lot about UL folks and bikepackers preferring bivys, but between using a bivy and a tarp overhead, I'm wondering if the weight difference would even be worth it. Thoughts?

 So I prefer to keep a stuff sack for it and just so you'll know this cuben fiber stuff sack way 0.2 ounces. So anyway, real quick, go ahead and pull this out and I'm going to move the camera in just a second. so I can get better shots and that's the stuff stacked 0

 I Wanted to be sure I could get in and out of it and just kind of see how I liked it and after having it I'm really happy that I decided to go with the side zip bivy just simply because it is I could not imagine having to squirm into this thing and I'm not saying that bad to represent the board babies I think any be V was just the top opening like that would give me the same impression. but anyway, I'm just saying I'm glad I went with that Anyway, right here on the mesh part, he's got a single tie out and like I said, I just kind of looped some shot core through there. you shot court that way if for some reason I took on this while I'm inside it. Maybe the shot cord will give and it won't tear this loop apart from the mesh there

 So this piece here weighs six ounces and then with the stuff sack it weighs six point two ounces. So I'm going to lay this thing out real quick and then we'll move the camera and just kind of show you around just a little bit and then I don't know if you can see I've got my full length 20 inch wide, 72 inch long expense in matte seven and I've got a Marmot helium 15 degree down bag here and I'm going to put that stuff in it just kind of give you an idea of how it fits me in 5 foot 10, 195 pounds and just kind of give you an idea what I look like inside the bivi with a 15 degree sleeping bag so hang on just second. Ok guys so here it is laid out on the ground like I said, it does have the 1 point 1 ounce seal nylon gray backing and that's a standard on all of his standard babies as well as his uh his sides it Vivi's you can get an option of cuben fiber 0.7 4 ounce per school, our Cuban fiber as the bottom and on that particular one they come with em 50 on the top

The Side Zip Borah Bivy

 The added space seems to allow my breath to disperse more widely and make it all the way through the mesh. In this case, condensation will land on the tarp and the mesh, and not my sleeping bag, which is ideal.I switched to the Borah Bug Bivy bivy from a bivy with a solid outer material like the MLD Superlight Bivy, because it trapped even more water vapor, sandwiching it between the layers. The Borah Gear Bug Bivy works better for me in this regard

 If you are over 220 lbs or 6’ 4”, or just want more room, don’t fret, custom sizing is free in most cases.This bivy is most comfortable for me when I suspend the head end and get it off my face. I don’t really mind the constriction of a bivy sack but I can’t stand the mesh on my face!You need to suspend the hood overhead to get the mesh off your face.I do sometimes wish the zipper went a bit further down the side
