* Deuce of Spades, it just takes a lot of effort to dig a decent cathole and without something to wrap around it your hand is going to hurt a lot. * Borah Bivy, great because it can be used in the shelter when it's buggy, not great because on really hot nights it's really miserable and sticky.

Love my Borah Bivy. It's my ground sheet when no bugs are around, draft blocker for my quilt on chilly night at elevation, and bug protection when needed. With my 9x8/6 Yama tarp the two weigh in at 12oz...14.15 with stakes. Not the lightest setup but it's storm worthy and bug proof.

If you're looking into the bug bivy route I might suggest considering a standard borah side zip bivy with the full net hood. The water resistant breathable body of the bivy will block drafts and add a bit of warmth so you can take a lighter quilt. And it will protect your quilt against any rain splash that may get under the tarp, or any condensation. Plus, you get the bug protection.

The bivy was nice because it adds a bit of warmth, cuts drafts and kept my quilts (I used two, one on top of the other) in order. That said, I'm thinking of getting a solid liner for my TarpTent stratospire just so I have have a larger totally dry and protected from snow and wind area.

I got to use my Borah bivy this past weekend and it was everything I hoped for in terms of blocking drafts, keeping me dry on moist ground, no condensation despite relatively high dew point, also silky smooth, sort of like a sheet you can pull over yourself. Enough room to stick my wet shoes in my shell at the end so that they wouldn't freeze.

This thing is light enough to keep on you the entire trail and storm worthy enough to get you through the rain and snow. I'd definitely recommend a bivy of some sort. Either Yama Bug Bivy or the Borah Cuben Bug Bivy. So much of the time you'll be able to go without the bivy and cowboy camp but like I said above it's light enough to carry the whole way for the occasional nights you'll need it keep out the bugs or for a few extra degrees of warmth.

I have a borah gear bug bivy. Hot the long and wide version with the side zip. It weighs like 6.5oz and it’s not even the dcf version. It doesn’t offer the room of a tent but it offers an escape from bugs while you sleep (which is pretty much the only time I stop moving when I’m backpacking).

6.4 ounces including shock chords and line locks. Borah Bug Bivy Large/extra wide( use this in warmer months.. 6.4 ounces both Borah Bivys have a side and over the chest entry...much better than just a chest entry.

I came to really like my DCF wide side zip borah bivy this year. Including in freezing rain, remember site selection find a slight mound to setup on, and on top of lite snow, rest of the snow scraped from the area.
