 So I'm just going to pull some off the top and we'll take a look at what they are so everyone's going to be dealt eight cards and let me see if I can get closer to the camera here. These cards going to have different types of actions or different types of things on them, so, for example, this card right here is an upgrade card as an action on one of your turns. You can spend the number of rage up here in the indicator so zero. In this case, in order to take this as an upgrade action, this one says after you reveal a quest card in combat

 Starting with the player, who has the first player marker you're going to go around the table taking actions and there are five different actions you may take. The first is, you may spend rage to invade and you can invade any outer province as long as there's one of these spots open in the area to invade it costs you rage equal to the strength value of the guy you're invading with so these Warriors cost. One I could spend one rage and put a guy out there if there's no more empty spots here. I can't put them there, but I could put them over here

 I can send a guy back. The next action is simply questing and anytime. You want to quest you'd, simply take one of these cards and you put it facedown on your board, indicating that you were on that quest at the end of the round when quests are evaluated. If you are successful in that quest, you will get some points

 On top of that, I think that the design of the game is very well done. The game does have that Viking feel and a lot of times I kind of find myself thinking. What would my clan of Vikings do, but on top of that, there are several different strategies that can work and those are based on what type of god you're you're. Following behind, so it could be that you're, the trickster, and maybe you want your or you're following the trickster, and you want your guys to die so you're getting into combats and you're

 According to legend, do slain warriors return from Valhalla to fight again as mortals? I don't know, but they do in this game. The cards offer the best incorporation of the theme. Thor cards grant benefits for winning battles, Loki grants benefits for losing them, etc. It would have been just as good with alien races or mech-fighters

 For mythology-based board games with miniatures that are more combat-heavy, also try Cyclades and Kemet.

Not strictly a combat game, but a good action-selection game if you like the theme.

 Just don't expect historically accurate heraldry.  The board, cards and other tokens are perfectly fine; relatively durable and functional, decent looking pieces. Functional and pleasant enough. But it's obvious that all the visual awesomeness was invested in the miniatures

  The rules are solid. Players who enjoy thematic elements may be disappointed to find out that there are no differences between any of the factions, at least at the start of the game. This is a minor quibble, and it keeps things simple and easier to balance. Gameplay can be very swingy, especially before you anticipate the strategic importance of certain cards, and how that plays into your tactics in the draft

  However, don't necessarily listen to me, because most of the people I game with prefer Blood Rage. And I have to admit that Blood Rage has a lot of things going for it. First of all, the rules are very simple, and it doesn't pull that card game trick where the complicated rules are embedded in the core cards. It's not hard to teach this game; it takes about fifteen minutes to explain to a bunch of relatively experienced board gamers, or twice that for more casual players

 These are pliable plastic game pieces, unpainted, with minimal assembly required for some of the larger figures. They are extremely detailed but too flexible to readily snap off the smaller parts. The designs are very pretty, highly thematic renditions of Viking warriors and their mythological creatures. These are more cinematic than realistic, and there is a slight cartoonishness to some of them - not necessarily in a bad way

Blood Rage is thematic, fun and easy to teach, but it's got enough crunch for even serious players

 And then they'll be even more interested once they learn the more complex nuances.  The miniatures are really the highlight of the box here and they are quite nice, easily the nicest I've seen in a board game that's not made by Games Workshop. There's a lot of really nice details and variety to them and they are just begging to be painted, if you're into that sort of thing. Although painting them isn't entirely necessary since the box comes with colored bases that can be affixed to the models

 Blood Rage is more a game of card drafting, clever warrior placement/movement, and misleading your opponents about your intentions. That's not to say that the cool Viking theme doesn't come through, because it absolutely does. I usually think that the Viking theme is a bit overdone, especially in board games, but it works here because Blood Rage is more about wanton death and widespread destruction than it is about bearded dudes in longboats fighting trolls.  The rules of this game have just the right amount of complexity to them

 There's a lot of really nice details and variety to them and they are just begging to be painted, if you're into that sort of thing. Although painting them isn't entirely necessary since the box comes with colored bases that can be affixed to the models.  I can't really give Blood Rage five stars though, because I do have a few issues with it. **Rising Sun** (4p) - Controversial take, but I liked this one a lot more than Blood Rage! It's a bit more controlled, more predictable, and IMO had more interesting player interaction. I also liked that there's only one round of combat per season, which made it feel like you're building up more than Blood Rage, where you're just constantly throwing your troops back into the meat grinder. **B+**

**Blood Rage** (5p) - We made a few rules goofs and the game dragged a bit, but I'd still be interested in trying it again. I liked the engine building take on area control, but it was a bit too chaotic for my tastes. **C+**

What Did You Play This Week? - (September 27, 2021)

This is tough without knowing more about your preferences, budget, play group, etc. Which of those games gets played the least/most? Have you rated them all on BGG or something? 

I have got to do some culling. If you had to pick some games from here to get rid of, what would you choose? It's getting difficult for me, these are all games I like or havent had a chance to try yet. The fantasy zombicide and night of the living dead I think I will let go because I already have invader and prefer it. Massive darkness I want to keep, I pledged for MD2. Goal is to get rid of around 10 boxes or so. I have most kid/family games on another smaller shelf and will keep all those most likely. Black Fleet is the game on bottom left.

Help me cull my collection

  It has an interesting bidding mechanism for combat that felt fresh to me and created a lot of excitement.  I personally thought it felt a bit deeper than Blood Rage or Cyclades, in that the strategies were a bit less obvious.

  I also thought it was kind of fiddly and would be hard to teach.  It's one I played most recently, and I'd really like to try it with real people at some point.

I want to add a conflict driven area control game to my collection but I am unsure which of the three to pick. I already have Inis so I’m skeptical of getting Blood Rage since the mechanics seem similar. Root looks like a lot of fun but prices are crazy right now. Cyclades seems like it needs the Titans expansion to be a fully flushed out game. 

Any thoughts? Why would you recommend one over the other?

Need help picking my next area control/conflict driven game... Cyclades, Blood Rage, or Root?

 That was sometimes broken up by your workers being captured and sold. God forbid someone do something crazy like build or contribute to the chapel.

Ever buy a much anticipated game, tore off the shrink wrap, watched the how to play videos, but felt underwhelmed by the actual play experience?

I have to. Imhotep is the first. Such an attractively presented game, lovely chunky wooden components, but the game play for me was… meh. 

The other is Mysterium. Such an amazingly beautiful component inventory, lovely artwork and as thematic as hell. But the gameplay (for me) is way too much setup work for an only mediocre play experience. 

I have returned to these two multiple times with different groups and they just never click. 

What games disappointed you? Have at it!

Games that disappointed

All these games accomplish what a heavy euro should: giving a huge, varied, interesting decision space with a thousand ways to play the game.

For me, it's the ultimate a minute to learn a lifetime to master game. Love how it can be played in multiplayer solitaire mode or cutthroat mode depending on your group.

I'm fairly new to the hobby but have become completely addicted to buying new games and trying them out. I've been trying to be as diverse as possible, so that I don't end up with games that scratch a similar itch within my small collection. So, my question is: 

**If you could only have 1 game of each 'genre' in a collection, which games would they be?**

Genre is a very loose term here, where it could mean a particular theme (space, fantasy, etc.) or mechanism or a combination of them and more. For example:

\- Hidden movement

\- Space war

\- Economic euro

Or, a bit more specific:

\- Heavy Uwe Rosenburg game

Things like that. I'd love to hear your thoughts and reasoning as to why you chose them. Thanks!

 Everyone can come up with a different strategy to win the game, which makes for some really intriguing play. I've never seen a game where you can win ..

 You just make a strategy that works with what you have available. * Everything can change in a blink of an eye. People jockey for position through the entire game and you really don't know who's going to win till the last action is made. It's just so well-balanced that everyone can surprise each other multiple times in a round

 And every card/action matters, unlike a lot of lighter games. I've never had a round where I thought "I didn't get the cards I wanted, I'm screwed". You just make a strategy that works with what you have available. * Everything can change in a blink of an eye

 * It allows everyone to have their own unique strategies to win. This is probably the best part of the game. Everyone can come up with a different strategy to win the game, which makes for some really intriguing play. I've never seen a game where you can win 

 * I hate mini cards. I know this is another quibble. Everything in this game so so nice and sleek, except for the card size. A lot of games use mini cards, and they annoy me

 I appreciate the instructions being easy to read and understand. They are very clear simple instructions but in case you need a visual they also provide a link to watch online on how to play the game. Before playing we watched the video and a couple more on how to play the game properly. It helped us very much to understand the rules of the game

 Although, my very advanced 9 year old was actually very good at playing this game. We had a great time playing and picking up on clues and hints on who could be the chameleon. I appreciate the instructions being easy to read and understand.
