 Is it slightly overkill? Yes I don't think anyone needs 12k right now but if you can afford it and based on like the competition as well like why wouldn't you? I think with the 12k is more about the ability to recrop and reframe rather than the actual resolution. To be completely honest with you sometimes I couldn't tell the difference between the 12k and the 8k files on my 5k screen. Even for someone like me as a solo shooter that does a lot of like landscape and outdoor shooting and licensing content I don't think I would get one I would need something that's somewhat in between the 12k and the 6k Pro so for me I don't need 12k resolution I don't think a lot of people do I would be okay with having a camera that is an 8k camera at 24 30p and has 120 frames per second with no crop in 6k and that has the ability to shoot ProRes as well. I think the ability to shoot ProRes is more important than having the 12k resolution so I would prefer a less powerful camera in terms of specs and resolution but one that is closer in terms of flexibility than the Ursa Mini Pro, the standard one or the 6k Pro or 6k

 So some of you may not know but I actually used to own the Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k a few years ago and I shot documentaries on it, I shot licensing content and even shot a short film but it was a bit too big and bulky for me to carry around the world for the projects that I was doing at the time. For the past couple of years I've used the 6k and the 6k pro as my main cameras and as you know I love the cameras, I love the image, they're really nice to use. 4k I've seen online a few people that were disappointed with the 4k footage being not as good as it should be being downscaled from 12k I didn't really notice any issue with that I think it looked fine I shot indoor and outdoors I would say though that the 4k 240 looked a little bit soft but I think it's due to the fact that you have to be in super 16 center mode and finally the file size so we'll talk about it more in depth later in the video how it is to edit those files but obviously when you shoot 12k and 8k the files are going to be huge so that's not something that I don't like about the camera or something that I think could be improved it's just something that could become an issue if you're not prepared for it I did the footage on separate hard drives just because they were filling out so quickly I was using the angel birds cards the 256 gig and I would get anywhere between 5 minutes to 15 minutes depending on the resolutions and the cards actually maxed out at 12k 60 I could only do four seconds at the time 12k 24p no issues but 12k 60 I could only do four seconds and now a quick word about today's sponsor FilmConvert I've talked about on the channel before but essentially FilmConvert enables you to add film color and film grain to your videos I've been using it since 2013 on pretty much all my work I've used it with black magic cameras the canon my drone you've got real film grain and you've got about 20 film stock to choose from and all the footage that you've seen from the 12k was actually graded with FilmConvert as well this time I didn't really want to have a look though I was more going for a neutral look because I wanted to showcase the camera's resolution and the color and the image so I didn't want to alter it too much and that's a great thing with FilmConvert is you can actually go for a proper film look or you can just have something that is a bit more natural I have already made a full dedicated video on it so feel free to check that out and don't forget to use the link in the description to save 10% so a question that I got asked a lot when I posted a video when I first got the camera and I posted stories on Instagram was how did you edit the files and what computer do you have so I'm going to read the specs of my computer just because I don't want to forget anything so I've got a 16 inch MacBook Pro with an eight core R9 processor I've got 32 gigs of ram a Radeon pro 5500 with eight gigs of video ram and a one tera SSD the computer is actually hooked up to a 5k ultra fine monitor so it's not the most recent computer but it's also quite a powerful one and the new M1 Pro and Max would be amazing though so editing the files was a lot easier than I thought it would be within DaVinci I imported all the files and playback in 12k 24p or 8k 120 was actually fine I had no drop frames whatsoever I actually exported all the files from DaVinci into transcoded them into 8k ProRes 422 so I could edit with them in Final Cut and even within Final Cut I had no drop frames whatsoever and the only time I had to change from best quality to best performance and when I started to apply effects and started grading things like that out of DaVinci it took about 45 minutes to export about 40 clips each time I've done that like maybe like 10 times or so which is actually not that bad I edited off a Samsung X5 SSD which is a super fast SSD I think it runs like at 2 gigs a second or something like that so that was fine

URSA MINI PRO 12K | REVIEW | 1 month with the Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro 12K

 Hey guys, Flo from Off2Lensy. I'm a French restaurant filmmaker based in the French Alps

 and this is my review of the Ursa Mini Pro 12k. So in this video I want to talk about my experience

 shooting with the camera for about a month, what I like about it, what I don't like about it,

 what could be improved in my opinion, how it is to edit the files as well as my general impression

 of the camera. So it took a little longer to make this video, I just wanted to make sure that I use

 the camera enough over that month in as many situations as I could because as always I want

 to give you guys my honest opinion. Before I start don't forget to subscribe to see more videos like

 this one and let's jump into it. So some of you may not know but I actually used to own the Ursa

 Mini Pro 4.6k a few years ago and I shot documentaries on it, I shot licensing content

 and even shot a short film but it was a bit too big and bulky for me to carry around the world

 for the projects that I was doing at the time. For the past couple of years I've used the 6k

 and the 6k pro as my main cameras and as you know I love the cameras, I love the image,

 they're really nice to use. I've shot documentaries and travel videos and personal

 content and even took one to Antarctica for work. So when Blackmagic announced the 12k last year

 I was really interested because first it's a camera, I love cameras in general, I love

 Blackmagic cameras but I was really curious to see how the camera would perform, what would the

 files be like and I knew it's something that I probably wouldn't get for for myself but I was

 very very interested especially by the 12k resolution and the ability to shoot 8k 120.

 Since I shoot a lot of outdoor content and lens care for licensing content

 this would be the perfect camera for it pretty much.

 So if you don't know what this camera is, essentially it's an Ursa Mini Pro with a 12k

 super 35 sensor. You can shoot in B-roll up to 12k in 12k 60, 8k 120, 4k 120, it's got a

 super 16 sensor mode, it's got 14 stops of dynamic range, it's got physical buttons and

 physical buttons everywhere, it's built like a tank, it's got four media slots, it's a proper

 cinema camera. I won't go into all the features and specs because otherwise we'll be here for an

 hour. So the one that I have is the EF mount version, you can also get it in PL mount and

 I got it with the top handle and the viewfinder as well and a v-lock plate at the back. So now

 let's get into the review. As I said before I wanted to test this camera with documentary work,

 licensing and outdoor content in mind. We just had a baby four months ago and obviously with

 the pandemic I'm not shooting as much proper commercial or documentary projects but I really

 did my best and tried my best to shoot in as many situations as I could to test all the resolutions

 and to really make a point of using the camera as much as I could over that period of one month.

 So I captured landscapes and macro shots for the resolution, I captured birds and

 waterfall for the slow motion options and also made a point of testing out as many lenses as

 I could. So I've used it with all my Canon L series lenses, my Sigma 18-35mm and even

 one of my Contax Zeiss 28mm. So I filmed in 12k, 8k, 4k and I filmed in the snow if I'm at sunset,

 sunrise, outdoors, indoors. So basically really making the best out of that month.

 So normally as you know I shoot outdoors a lot and I prefer to have a handheld approach or

 run-and-gun style so shooting with a 12k which was mostly done on tripod really reminded me

 when I used to shoot on the OSI Mini Pro or bigger cameras like the C200 for example.

 So what I like about this camera, first of all the image, it's amazing. I think it's the best

 image I've seen from any camera that I've ever used. I don't know if it's the resolution,

 the gen 5, the sensor, it's probably a combination of everything but it is stunning. Resolutions and

 frame rates, obviously the most insane feature is the fact that you can shoot 12k but the fact

 that you can actually shoot 12k at 60p and 8k in 120 it's just incredible. I think my favorite two

 settings to use this camera at was the 12k, 24p and 8k 120. For the price which is 6000 USD I think

 now it's really really hard to beat this camera in terms of image and specs. It's great to shoot with

 um I had a lot of fun shooting with a 12k not only capturing 12k resolution or extreme slow motion

 I was really excited every time I took the camera out which is very very rare these days because

 obviously we get bombarded with like new features all the time but shooting 12k and 8k 120 was the

 first for me and I could have done that every day for six months honestly. So I actually also enjoy

 shooting on a tripod with this camera like I said I'm more of a handheld person but despite the fact

 that this camera is pretty bulky and heavy it was actually comfortable shooting handheld as well.
