 So poplar wood core in this ski, that's actually a little denser than we would get in a lot of touring skis. You know you see a lot of use of polonia or caruba or wood like that that's less dense. So poplar as a start to the construction here already gives it a stronger feel than most. And then we do get a little bit of titanal underfoot mostly just for binding retention but that will add some stability, add some vibration damping, just give it a stronger more stout feel right underfoot here

 Welcome to our 2023 ski test. Today we're talking about the Black Crows Corvus Freebird. This is in their touring line of their catalog of how Black Crows organizes their skis. Among touring skis, this thing's pretty wide and it's also pretty strong

 So like I said it's kind of on the bigger side for a touring ski. If you're lucky enough that you're touring and seeking out a lot of soft snow maybe not like quite as deep as you would take the the ferrex freebird for but you wouldn't choose this if you're just touring at your local resort and you're coming up and down a groomer. You should probably at least be encountering some un-groomed terrain and and ideally some softer snow. This is the 176 centimeter length so I think this is an important conversation with this ski almost 1900 grams

So the brand claims that this is a really awesome ski for touring, primarily going to be great in heavier snowfall, lighter snow, anything in the backcountry. They're going to do really well uphill, but they're still going to be a competent ski on the downhill, particularly when you're skiing powder

 It's going to be something that you can ski a little bit slower, you can maneuver really well in trees, but definitely not something to charge super hard on. These work differently for different types of skiers.  If you're trying to tour and shave some weight and just care about the uphill a lot, this is a good ski for you. It's still going to ski relatively well downhill, but it is not going to be a big mountain class ski. It's going to be something that you can ski a little bit slower, you can maneuver really well in trees, but definitely not something to charge super hard on. These work differently for different types of skiers

2023 Black Crows Corvus Freebird Ski Review | Curated

 The flex pattern and shape is closer to the 120 so it definitely carries that surfy playful feel from its larger brother. I'd say the 110 is definitely more suitable for someone riding on the west coast where the conditions are always changing but you can still rip it all over if you wanted to. Was surprised how well it hooked and held an edge on groomers but still flexible enough for butters and presses. If you're someone on the west coast and looking for a do-it-all one ski quiver with elements of a freeride/freestyle ski the Atomic Bent 110 is the ski for you!

 And having a nice lightweight ski like this that still has some grip and bite to it is really valuable. So yeah, just it's very, very well rounded. You know, I think you get more power in this ski as an Alpine Touring ski than a lot of skis that are kind of put into the Touring collection. It is a little heavier than some, but I think that's a perfectly reasonable tradeoff considering the extra stability and extra power that you get

 Now, take that and reapply it to a touring ski. This is much, much lighter. We get a blend of materials in here, poplar, carbon fiber, and there's actually a metal binding plate underfoot that's adding some stability too. So, much lighter than that normal Corvus, so to speak, but there's still some power built into this ski too

 Really nice, versatile tip shape up here, you know, quite a bit of taper and quite a bit of rocker too. So, that's going to give you really good tip-in performance, really good start of a turn performance in just about any snow condition you can think of. Soft snow, firm snow, whatever. 107 underfoot, just like the normal Corvus, this thing's got a 21-meter turn radius

These skis are as amazing as they look! While this ski is not my riding style I could see how someone could FALL IN LOVE WITH THEM! The lightness of this ski was outstanding. I have truly never felt a ski function so well whilst maintaining that weight. They hooked up on groomers, bash through crud, and stomp hits without the stability ever weavering. It was the perfect dimensions for my height and weight at 5'11" 150 lbs however I could see myself rocking the 188s just because of the less weight

 For my riding style these skis were, simply put, too light and lacked the power I need, however, if you're looking for a Rockies one ski quiver that is SUPER playful, these are the skis for you. Get them before they sell out!!

 They hooked up on groomers, bash through crud, and stomp hits without the stability ever weavering. It was the perfect dimensions for my height and weight at 5'11" 150 lbs however I could see myself rocking the 188s just because of the less weight. The twin tip shape was super playful and these skis could butter around the mountain with ease. I personally found them to chatter a tiny bit at high speeds but for what you are getting it's manageable

 And then in the shovel, pretty similar to what we see in the Alpine version, and that's just going to help you stay on top of anything that you find out there, as well as plow through any of the crud. We see a bunch of people around here that have these and they use them for a resort touring ski, something that can blend between true Alpine and backcountry skiing. We have a Kingpin 13 demo binding on here, and this is a pretty good choice for a ski like this. It's not full-tech, nor is it to the other end with the frame binding, but this hybrid tech binding I think works really well for this ski

At 116 in the waist, this is a solid bet for a powder ski that's still going to be able to make quick, short radius turns that ease down the front side of the hill. It is a solid combination of orienting a wider platform with something that can still turn very quickly. We're using a polonia wood core in this ski, which is a bit lighter and a bit stiffer than poplar that we use in a few other models
