 So here it is. This is the Beyerdynamic M201-NC microphone. It's made in West Germany. It's a moving coil dynamic mic and it has a hyper cardio polar pattern

 It's another dynamic microphone that was originally made in the 60s and there's been a few different versions since then. It's a cardioid pickup pattern and it's very widely used. According to RecordingHacks.com, 75% of the recordings in your collection have this microphone used on them

If you want to stick to recording yourself then in the long run you will have way more from better mics than an external preamp or other ourboard stuff

I'm recording an EP/Album with my band, where i'm the sound engineer, producer and will do the mixes as well. Seeing as I have all those responsibilities I am also in charge of the shopping list. We have a budget of around 900€ which is around 1000 USD. A part of the budget will be spent on cables and mic stands, we're also buying a headphone amp and 4 pairs of AKG K-52 headphones for monitoring while recording/rehearsing. I'm also buying a palmer re amp box in case it's needed and I already have a pair of AKG P120's (which i plan on using as overheads) a 58, a pair of pencils, 57 clone, a real 57 and an Studio Projects C1 mic, we're also buying another 57 clone a Shure 57 beta A and a cheap kick mic. We have +/- 500€ left in our budget and i honestly can't decide on what to do with it. A part of me thinks that it'd be great to have a switchable pattern condenser like a Rode NT2a and a cheap ribbon microphone, or if I should keep it simple and buy a tube pre amp like a ART MPA II or a SPL Gold Mike with the remainder of the budget. I don't know if those 500€ spent on the pre amp will make that big of a difference (that I cant emulate with good pre amp plugins) or if I should just buy more mics and have more diversity.

To Pre or not to Pre

 Tight and focused without being too dominant. Midrange is really the sweet spot for electric guitar tones, but with nylon string it has to be a seamless blend. The Beyer manages to provide just that, so I really can’t speak highly enough of this microphone.  As stated previously, I haven’t had the opportunity to really mess around with it on steel-string acoustic or electric guitar, but I’m sure it would perform just as well if you take the time to dial it in

 I’ve had to run my Bose practically wide open just to get the guitar audible. With a steel string acoustic it’d be clipping and feeding back all over the place, but the nylon string is a totally different animal. I’m sharing all this information just to underline what a specific task I’ve given the Beyer, and to explain how amazingly it’s performed at it.  The Beyerdynamic M201 TG was recommended to me by an engineer at a very high end classical guitar dealer, and it has absolutely solved all these problems for me

For classical and Spanish guitar you have to be really careful with low end frequencies, and the Beyer has managed to keep them full and well-rounded even at lower settings

 I don't know even though the u87 is not in like the Omni mode or the figure-eight mode I still feel like the u87 just picks up a lot more room noise than the telen 103 I've had experiences with the telen 103 in like crazy Recording situations like in the living room no acoustic treatment and I just put on like one of these pop filters like the I forgot The name of this thing the electron f8 or something like that I can't remember the name but I put that on this telen 103 and I get literally no room noise You can also use that with the u87 but us but you're still going to get a little bit more room noise It's healing 103 is a lot more quieter than the u87 And again, I think that is because the u87 has two capsules in it What I also noticed with recording with both of these microphones the u87 comes in a little bit more hotter And I think it's because of that transformer and real quick back on distortion You know with the telen 103 it does have less distortion than the u87 and with transformer microphones You have to understand that when you're dealing with distortion The u87 can actually rise up to the distortion a lot faster than the telen 103 If you're getting help so far go ahead and hit the like button helps out now Let's talk about the price now the telen 103 you could probably get this brand new for about $1,200 versus the u87 gonna cost you around $4,000 like I said before transformerless microphones gain popularity back in like the 80s or the 90s because of less Transformers in their recording process and also because it's cheaper a lot of the price from the u87 kind of comes from the Transformers inside and you would think that as time goes on, you know prices will come down for materials But that's not the case for transformers Which is why this microphone cost a lot more is because it has transformers inside and a couple more capsules than the telen 103 now who are these microphones for now in my personal experience and using both of these microphones for Mixing and recording and stuff like that. I still feel like you should get the telen 103 It's a really great microphone and it helps you get that modern sound that you might be looking for It is a brighter microphone because of that extended range of it being a transformer list microphone Maybe you want to record drums and stuff like that transformer list microphones get less distortion now with the u87 I'm not sure if I can recommend this microphone as a home studio Microphone unless you have a well-treated room This microphone can pick up a lot of the room noises and it will expose the fact that you need acoustic treatment I've seen a lot of famous people use the u87 in like crazy untreated rooms and conditions and stuff like that And I'm starting to think that's cat or maybe like the mixing engineer is not using a lot of compression or something like that I'm not sure how they're doing it I just don't believe that you can use a u87 in a very noisy room for vocals personally I think both of these are really great microphones if you're gonna record hip-hop pop or rock I recommend getting the u87 because of the more warm sound that you get I feel like the tops and the bottoms of the u87 are just polished and I do feel like they both sound very similar But the u87 sounds more polished and stuff like that. I still think the teal and 103 is a really great microphone It does sound a little bit more brighter at times and you know comparing the two and re-recording some of my own songs I just noticed that the teal and 103 can really just sound a little bit more harsh and more airy than it should let me Know in the comments which microphone you're gonna pick up if we're getting help so far

 I'm just going to show you which microphone I'm using at the time Make sure you guys check out themusicgame. My arm is already getting tired when you're looking for a microphone There are basically four important things You got to understand the build quality the sound quality the price and who are they for first? Let's talk about the build quality. Both of these microphones are basically built with somewhat the same materials They feel the same the of course The telen 103 is a lot lighter than the u87 both of these microphones have the exact same capsule But the u87 has two of these capsules the telen 103 only has one the telen 103 Also is a transformerless microphone versus the u87 having a transformer inside of it The reason Norman made a transformerless microphone because at the time a lot of people were using Transformer microphones and inside of their studio equipment a lot of that stuff had transformers in it So a lot of people just wanted something different. They felt like transformers were making their music sound worse So at the time transformers microphones became very popular which is why Norman decided to release their telen 103 series and made the Norman telen 103 right now have both of these microphones plugged directly into my Apollo 2 and X using the Neumann 1073 unison plug-in and let me know how you think it sounds so I'm gonna go ahead and plug both of these into the hardware And then come right back and at the bottom

 Next we are on the omnidirectional polar pattern and I will rotate all the way around the microphone. As I am rotating you should hear no real huge change in the tone and we will end at the front of the microphone. And lastly we are on the figure eight pattern. Neumann U87 Ai Mic Review / Test (Compared to NW700, AT2020, NT1, SM7b, KSM44a, C414 XLII)

 This is about 4,500 in Canada. This one's about 500 in Canada. One 10th the price, give or take. Now we have the TechZone Audio Products Stellar X2 versus the Neumann U87 AI

 And here we get to prove that the specs are not the most important thing on a microphone. This is a condenser microphone with the cardioid, omni and figure eight polar patterns. It's 20 Hertz to 20 kilohertz. It has an SPL of 117 DB or 127 DB with the pad enabled

 Smells good, right? It was a thing, and it would perfectly explain the differences. But I don't know about you, I would rather not have that on my mic. I mean, it is a Neumann. It's built like a tank, but you should probably not be rough with it because it's a month's salary for a decent career

 I mean, once again, of course, this is good. There's a reason it's in every studio that's worth its salt, but it does beg another question. Do you need this microphone if you're in voiceover or starting your own studio? No. In fact, I saw a post the other day of actors reading lines for a Disney movie and they were using a Rode NT1

Why is The NEUMANN U87ai The Most Sought After Mic

 It sounds really amazingly good on vocals of all types. From a higher pitched soul vocalist to deep R&B to fast paced rap to lead pop vocals, this piece shines and sounds incredible in the mix. I lowered my expectations before I heard it because I wasn't planning on being blown away by the sound of this mic. But I was! It sounds like it has a built in de-esser and captures so much DETAIL

  TL;DR it's amazing but there's no good reason to pay for a new one when a decent or better condition used unit sounds the same.

 Get good analog preamps first and a good room/booth to match. I'm using a 4-710d with a host of UAD plug-ins like the 1176 and Pultec EQ and it sounds amazing. I would like to pick up a vintage Neve 1081 but that'll run into the 5 figures for a pair. As long as your preamp is professional quality it should do the trick
