 So here it is. This is the Beyerdynamic M201-NC microphone. It's made in West Germany. It's a moving coil dynamic mic and it has a hyper cardio polar pattern

 It's another dynamic microphone that was originally made in the 60s and there's been a few different versions since then. It's a cardioid pickup pattern and it's very widely used. According to RecordingHacks.com, 75% of the recordings in your collection have this microphone used on them

i'd spend the extra cash on better mics. forget the 'cheap kick mic' and '57 clone' and by better mics. some examples in your budget: Beyerdynamic m201, Beyerdynamic m88, Electro Voice RE320, Warm Audio 47jr. If you want to stick to recording yourself then in the long run you will have way more from better mics than an external preamp or other ourboard stuff

I'm recording an EP/Album with my band, where i'm the sound engineer, producer and will do the mixes as well. Seeing as I have all those responsibilities I am also in charge of the shopping list. We have a budget of around 900€ which is around 1000 USD. A part of the budget will be spent on cables and mic stands, we're also buying a headphone amp and 4 pairs of AKG K-52 headphones for monitoring while recording/rehearsing. I'm also buying a palmer re amp box in case it's needed and I already have a pair of AKG P120's (which i plan on using as overheads) a 58, a pair of pencils, 57 clone, a real 57 and an Studio Projects C1 mic, we're also buying another 57 clone a Shure 57 beta A and a cheap kick mic. We have +/- 500€ left in our budget and i honestly can't decide on what to do with it. A part of me thinks that it'd be great to have a switchable pattern condenser like a Rode NT2a and a cheap ribbon microphone, or if I should keep it simple and buy a tube pre amp like a ART MPA II or a SPL Gold Mike with the remainder of the budget. I don't know if those 500€ spent on the pre amp will make that big of a difference (that I cant emulate with good pre amp plugins) or if I should just buy more mics and have more diversity.

To Pre or not to Pre

 Tight and focused without being too dominant. Midrange is really the sweet spot for electric guitar tones, but with nylon string it has to be a seamless blend. The Beyer manages to provide just that, so I really can’t speak highly enough of this microphone.  As stated previously, I haven’t had the opportunity to really mess around with it on steel-string acoustic or electric guitar, but I’m sure it would perform just as well if you take the time to dial it in

 I’ve had to run my Bose practically wide open just to get the guitar audible. With a steel string acoustic it’d be clipping and feeding back all over the place, but the nylon string is a totally different animal. I’m sharing all this information just to underline what a specific task I’ve given the Beyer, and to explain how amazingly it’s performed at it.  The Beyerdynamic M201 TG was recommended to me by an engineer at a very high end classical guitar dealer, and it has absolutely solved all these problems for me

For classical and Spanish guitar you have to be really careful with low end frequencies, and the Beyer has managed to keep them full and well-rounded even at lower settings

BEST MICROPHONE FOR VOCALS (2022) | Neumann TLM 102

  So the TLM 102 doesn't compare at all to the TLM 103 sadly. For vocals, it is very obvious the TLM 103 will tackle the job better- in every single way. Upon using the TLM 102, you'll notice the overall sound is "flat" which isn't necessarily bad. A flat sound provided can offer increased singing confidence as the mic fails to pick up on the accurate pitch

  In conclusion the TLM 102 Mic will make your set-up look gorgeous, it's sleek and matte finish really does shine. If it wasn't for my "professional hearing" I would rate this mic 5/5 stars, unfortunately for me this is not the case and instead felt a bit let down on its performance. Though great for anything, it won't excel with everything.

The microphone itself looks great, it is an attractive condenser mic with a well implemented design, compact enough to not take up a lot of a space- yet large enough to capture every sound.  The sound quality is compareable* to your standard 700.00 value microphone, I'm not going to upsell what the sound offers because again, it is compareable to other microhpones for the same value yet automatically you know your paying for the brand. Neumann has a decent reputation, it's something to purchase just because it's Neumann, the "Porsche" of microphones

A very attractive microphone with a performance catch

 Now the TLM-102 is my daily driver, along with the Shure SM58. And that's because it suits all my needs. Now I know that the TLM-102 is a bit pricey. But to be honest, it's one of the most natural, smoothest sounding microphones that you could find at this price or lower

 I say that because a lot of cheap condenser microphones that are in the $100 or even $200 range have this really bright sound to them. And it makes it unusable in the recording. It's like a very shrill, hurts my teeth kind of ears sound. I don't know, when I hear high pitch sounds they hurt my teeth, they ring in my teeth, I don't know

But yeah, it's a very unpleasant sound and when it's time to mix it, at first you go, oh man this sounds great because humans, we are attracted to bright sounds or bright colors or light. So we think it sounds really good and then when you start mixing it, it sounds, you just hear a bunch of high frequencies and the recording is just unusable. I don't know if I explained that well enough, but you know

 Here I have my Shure SM58 and it just towers over this little guy. And we all know that the Shure is as portable as portable gets, I mean with it being a gig microphone and all. And there's no denying that the Neumann TLM-102 could probably fit in your pocket. And no, you probably shouldn't do that
