 It's like, wow, it sounds really good all by itself. It's really balanced and natural sounding so I've always wanted to try one for many, many, many years and yeah, it sounds just killer. I've been blending ribbons and dynamic mics on cabinets for a long time now. You know a standard combination would be like a 57 and then a ribbon mic, that kind of thing

 Okay, so now I'm going to show you what the M160 sounds like all by itself. Okay, really cool, nice and warm and natural sounding. It might be just a hair dark for my taste right now, but if I just use this API Vision EQ here to just add a little bit of top end. This sounds great to me now

 So kind of a classic VOX set up really with the AC15 running into the open back cab with the Alnico Celestion Blue speaker and I'm miking up the cabinet with a 57 and the M160. Now the mikes are placed just on either side of the dust cap of the speaker, so not right in the middle of the speaker, we're just off to either side of the dust cap about an inch back from the cabinet and about equidistant back from the cab and I've got both mikes plugged into this BAE dual 1073 MP microphone preamp here. I'm blending them out of the mic preamp into one track so I can combine them to make one sound but what I want to show you first is just what the 57 sounds like all by itself. So here's an SM57 on the open back cab VOX AC15

 I mean, really cool, natural sound. So I'm going to leave that little bit of top end in there and then what I'm going to do is now blend the 57 in. Things are going to get louder now because you're going to hear both mics blended together. I'm going to pull the 57 up to about 60% of the level of what I've got the M160 at and listen to what these two mics sound like blended

It’s the industry standard for a reason. Next, I would think about getting some nice ribbon microphones. The Beyerdynamic M160 sounds smooth and is fantastic on saxophone, acoustic guitar, guitar cabinets, even as drum overheads - mind you, they are pretty directional, so be careful when positioning them.

Thinking about decking out a space to record in.  And possibly renting it out as a studio later.  What mics should I get?  Obviously some SM57s if you’re into those.  And I’d take an MD-421 for guitars.  But I don’t know what to do beyond that.

What are the must have microphones for a new studio?

 I am a sucker for ribbons on drums and acoustic guitars. So that's just, they sound phenomenal. It's nice having individual mics. So the only ribbon mics that I own prior to the 160s was my R88 which is a stereo ribbon microphone

 So I really want to try them on that. But I did not get to this time. But for everything else, I've been really, really happy with these. So if you're considering getting some ribbon mics, these are really great

 And it has been, it's been so nice. It's really nice to be able to get your hands on a ribbon mic for, on a quality, let me clarify, on a quality ribbon mic for $700 bucks and be able to use that kind of like a, I don't want to say a 58 but just having it because it's, the build of it is very portable. It's not a big giant mic. It's like a nice handheld mic

 So this will just go on forever. So I just wanted to put this one out to share my thoughts and my experiences on how I've used it so far. And it has been, it's been so nice. It's not just for drums however. If you put it in front of a singer for example, you're going to pick up a different style of grit across the vocal

 All right, let's get started. What I hear in the 4038 is a thickness in low end that I don't hear out of any other mic. It's much darker than the condenser, as most ribbons will be, but I think that works perfectly for bringing in the toms and smoothing out the cymbals when you're using them as overheads. They also take EQ really well, and if you do want to bring some of those highs back, it rarely gets harsh or grating

Coles 4038 Microphone Review For Drums

 So yeah, this is what the mic sounds like on my voice. We'll go on to the drums and then the piano, so stay tuned. So, here we go. So, here we go

 It was the year 1952 that this microphone came out. And it was designed to be a replacement for their old Marconi microphones. Those were incredibly chonky and big and heavy, and I think they were really expensive too. So these were designed to be cheaper to replace, and they had a better frequency response as well

 There's A, Kohl's Electroacoustics Limited. And there's a pamphlet, and another pamphlet, and here we go, we get to the microphone here. Okay, so let's just look at the things that are included. Okay, so here are the things it comes with

 Now, this microphone, as you can probably hear even through the YouTube compression, it sounds quite a bit different than how this sounded a while ago when I showed it. So, as you can probably hear, there is less high end, but whatever high end there is, it's a lot smoother. And the lows and the mids are incredibly rich and really thick, and it just has that almost the voice of God kind of thing. And the closer I get to it, the more proximity effect there is, and you can just really get the lows in my voice if I just go right up to it
