Benchmade Mini Barrage 585 review

 Hello! Here I have a mini barrage from Benchmade. It's number is 585. This knife was sent to

 me for review. Let's take a look at it. So these holes here and the emblem there, let's

 get that. You can see the emblem there. There's a pocket clip either side. Knife tip up. Very

 forgiving belt clip. And there is a spring lock here. So this is in the open position.

 You're going to push down this way and push up for the locking position. And then so there's

 an access lock. Here's a thumb stud. You can see it is locked in place. It will not deploy.

 So this will go towards the jimping. Press down and pull. So it is very close to the jimping

 and it will open. I am very unfamiliar with Benchmade's Valox material. They also offer

 this in a G10. And this feels like a G10. But since I have no experience with the Valox,

 there is no way I can tell you what the huge difference is. So ambidextrous

 thumb studs. Let's see, can we do this? Thumb stud here. I'm holding it like that on the belt clip,

 sort of. Whoa! Super nice. Good edge. Good point. There's a clip on this. Very well

 sanded clip. And the user of this has not really done anything other than EDC it

 for the past 10 years. Very good edge retention. Incredible. Can we choke? Not really. I wouldn't

 suggest that this is very sharp for here. So to release, we'll pull on both sides of this access

 lock. So we'll pull this position and it is spring loaded. You can see that I'm letting go

 and there's the snap. So you will not be able to flick it closed. Let's see if we can do a reverse

 flick. So I guess thumb stud here. Not a lot of material. Nope. Nope. There we go.

 Huh. Well, I guess you need practice for that. Very gorgeous knife. Made in America. And there's a

 balance. Let's see. The balance is somewhere about right here. Let's check it out. Here? Maybe?

 Here? Maybe? Slightly? Nope. I didn't balance that. Just about where the access lock is.

 It's a beautiful grind. And really nice grip. I don't know how much larger.

 I don't know. My fingers just like slide in these grooves right here. What is this other side for?

 Oh, like box. Like to cut a box or to tape. Nice. Very ergonomic. Excellent.

 So from my limited research, I found this to be about $155 as the base from Benchmade.com.

 And they don't necessarily make this exact grind anymore, but they do still sell this and it goes

 up from $155. You want a very reliable quality knife. This is high recommendation. Thank you

Excellent Knife - Just Wish The Clip Was Stronger

 That way, it does not ever fall open on its own. I carry my barrage in my pocket often and usually don't lock the blade shut with the switch on the knife, but it's probably a good practice to do. I've never had a problem though.  I'm not a huge fan of the plasticy scales (sides of the handle) that come with the knife, but I'd much rather have a stellar blade and locking mechanism than worry about the feel of the handles

 The axis locking mechanism is superb and holds the blade firmly in place with very little wiggle. With a pull on the release mechanism the blade is easy to close, and the way the release is positioned, it ensures your fingers are away from the blade as it's closing. But be careful as with any good knife -- it is sharp!!  The axis-assist open works very reliably and swiftly. As you use the thumb stud to push the blade out of the knife, it crosses a threshold (of about a centimeter open) where the knife opens on its own and locks into place

Great pocket knife

 It has a hollow plastic design that no doubt was to save weight due to the steel liners inside. Other reviews have pointed out that you get a cheap feeling due to this. I agree thus 4 stars instead of 5. I would have liked a more rubberized solid grip even at the expense of more weight! Put this into the Can't Get Everything You Want bucket

Say the words “Buck knife” and most people will probably envision the classic 110 Folding Hunter, an enduring model that has stood the test of time and is still going strong today. But they aren’t content to rest on their laurels and have been making strides to modernize their products. The recently released 110 and 112 Slim models are a perfect example, but their new Sprint series is even more of a statement from Buck on where they intend to go in the future.

The Sprint family is a new ground-up design of liner-locking flippers, and they mark Buck’s use of a ball-bearing-based pivot system on their production knives. The result is a completely new feel for a “Buck knife.” The detent is not particularly strong, so it does require slightly more finger movement than some to deploy, but I’m actually a fan of the action. It is still plenty quick, it’s very smooth, and it won’t tear up your finger if you like to fidget flip your knives.

The drop point blade is just over 3-inches long, made from 420HC using Buck’s famous Bos heat treatment that allows this steel to punch well above its weight class. It features a stonewashed finish, which I am a big fan of on a working knife, that does a great job at hiding scuffs and scratches. With a hollow grind and a nice swedge, the Sprint will be a good all-around performer. 

Overall these materials are put together into one solid design. It is a perfect size for EDC with well thought out ergonomics. The handles index very nicely in the hand and you get the nice integrated finger guard thanks to the flipper design. 

There are also a few cutouts on the spine, both behind the pivot, and on the blade itself that works well for choking up with your index finger, or for getting your thumb behind difficult cuts.

With all of the elements working so well together, the Buck Sprint Select makes a compelling case for itself as one of the best new budget knives to hit our shelves so far in 2019.

No matter which version you find yourself drawn to, the Buck Sprint series is a well thought out EDC knife that can run the distance, and it’s a nice jog forward from Buck.
