For me hidden role games at their purest are awful but I tend to like them when there is another layer of gameplay added. To that end I really dislike basic Werewolf and The Resistance but don't mind Bang! and now really like Battlestar Galactica. First of all, probably the best implementation of theme I've ever seen for a board game, and all done without sacrificing gameplay. It captures the theme beautifully, as the USSR and the USA play tug of war with the world as the stage and ultimate prize. In your twilight struggle, you must manage crisis, take advantage of beneficial historical events, spread your influence, and try desperately to stave off nuclear war as the DEFCON rating drops and threatens armageddon. A word of warning to new players; the USSR starts off stronger than the USA, and this can be discouraging to new players. As the war progresses, the USA will regain their ground and give the USSR a real run for their money, so don't lose hope! If you are a strategy fan this is a must buy

You may want to take a break between the practice round and restarting the game. I play games with my wife and another married couple. What usually happens with longer board games is two people will get the game set up and refresh themselves on the rules (or learn them if it is the first time playing the game). This game is pretty rule heavy, so I wouldn't recommend if you are new to board games or if you like games that you can learn in 15-30 minutes. That being said, this game is great if you are a fan of longer war games (think Risk, Axis and Allies, War of the Ring). My favorite part about this game is that the event cards are all reflective of important political events at the time. You don't need to have a lot of history knowledge to enjoy the game, but the facts and tidbits along the way keep the game engaging when it gets drawn out
