 Playing Glen Campbell's Gentle on My Mind with the individual guitar notes was like day and night difference. I was right. This Audio-Technica is not for discerning listening, and maybe not even for amateurs. So, in conclusion, my +20 year old K-Mart Sony turntable PS-LX295 puts out all the individual guitar string notes across the range, but this Audio-Technica misses the high notes almost entirely

 The Sony was an entry-level turntable without any adjustments for tracking or weight, and seemed to be similar to the Audio-Technica (photo attached). From the beginning it seemed there was something just not right with the sound out of this AT-LP60XUSB. To me it was a little like the music was coming from behind a wall. I thought maybe I was just not remembering how the Sony sounded or maybe it was my old surround sound or maybe the very old speakers

 My name is Chris and today we're going to take a closer look at the Audio-Technica AT-LP-60X.

 Much like most of you I'd imagine, I've been a fan of musical gear from all ranges of the spectrum for as long as I can remember.

 I've always been in trance when I saw a new stereo on the shelf at a local Meijer or Radio Shack and I simply had to hear how it sounded and see how it worked.

 The blinking lights, the shiny knobs, the latest improvement and newest technology would keep my attention directed and riveted to one piece of equipment for hours on end as my imagination ran wild with the stories of how the music itself was created.

 No small feat for a kid who had ADD long before it was diagnosed properly and then they added another letter to the condition.

 As I got older I came to appreciate the different levels of quality in products and I started to pay attention to the different price points that might work for different people.

 I can't quite explain why really, no one was asking for my opinion as such on these things at the time, but I catalogued the information about them nonetheless as I tend to do with most things that keep my attention.

 Maybe you've stumbled across the hobby of record collecting, or your friends introduced you, or maybe you're just a music buff who's looking at trying something new, but the mechanical functions of turntables and the fragile nature of vinyl records is a bit intimidating. Where do you start?

 Sure, it's easy enough to run down to your local record store to support yet another small business and pick up your releases by your favorite artists, but now you're going to need a setup to play your newly-priced possessions, and there are a host of options out there that can easily overwhelm someone.

 If you've had your ear to the ground in any fashion when it comes to entry-level turntables, you might have heard about one of the most popular options out there, which is the Crosley suitcase-style player. You may have also heard that these players aren't any good, and I can assure you, you've heard correct.

 While that can be an entire separate video on that all on its own, for now please just trust me when I say that you'll want to stay away from these tables as they damage records simply by playing them due to the nature of their construction.

 This isn't to insult anyone who's purchased a Crosley, a Victrola, or any other type of the record player that has the dreaded red cartridge of death attached to it, but rather an informational piece to make you aware that your records are being harmed when you play on these, and if you care about such things, you'll want to replace your turntable as soon as the opportunity arises.

 This was precisely why I recommended the 60X. While the piece itself is not a high-end audio file player that will garner the best sound you've ever heard, it is a solid entry-level table that won't eat your records like a Crosley, will offer you a nice playback performance, and for those of you who are very new, it has a fully automatic option, so it reduces the stress of scratching your brand new vinyl.

 Let's crack open a brand new table right from the box and take a look at what you get inside and how exceedingly simple it is to set this up. Then we'll talk about operation, maintenance, and the sound performance you can expect from the 60X.

 Basic instructions of 45 adapter. This is always the tricky part when I'm trying to unbox something or open something on the tables, I have to lift above my shoulders, so I think I'm just going to drop the box to the side. Let's see if I can make that work without dropping the turntable too.

 So this says obviously accessory, so we have, I'm assuming, the power adapter.

 And these are our connectors. This is a little different than what you'll normally find. If you're newer, you'll hear people talk about how you need to have a phono stage, and all that means is this is a very weak signal going into a stereo.

 So you have to connect this to something to amplify this signal, then into your stereo, you connect it to the stereo, which amplifies your speakers.

 This is a little different. This has a line input and a phono input, and it only has an RCA jack, so you can plug this directly into any basic stereo that has red and white RCA cables, which we'll show you soon.

 On the bottom is our platter and our felt mat, so make sure when you're pulling these out of the styrofoam, set them aside, don't drop them.

 They've put, I don't know what this is, if you know what this is, let me know what kind of material this is, but they put a protective cover on the dust cover, which sounds awful when you're pulling it off.

 And the dust cover comes off very easily. Close the lid, pull straight up.

 Now that was interesting, and gently set it aside because you're going to want a little room to work when you're putting the platter on.

 If you notice, this is the front of the machine. We have our buttons, we have our selector, our tone arm. This brass gear, this is what we're going to hook the belt up because this is belt-driven turntable, which is on the bottom of the platter.

 It's an aluminum platter. It has a little bit of ring to it, but for the price point, it's not bad.

 You'll notice there's a piece of tape right here that's holding down a red arrow. Right here on the underside is the belt, so try not to touch that a whole lot when you're taking it out of the box.

 You're going to put this onto the spindle in the center, and we want to align this red arrow with that brass spindle.

 Then the trick is to pull off the tape while holding onto the red pieces so we don't lose them.
