  In finishing up this review: you get a brand new upgradable table for under $100, that's unheard of.  P.S. Do not forget, you'll wanna get some cleaning solution (on amazon or search around) so that your new (or old) vinyl will be sounding right

This is what it is, a decent turntable at a great price. I bought it for more than the seventy clams it's currently going for, and don't regret it. I should note that I am only playing new vinyl, stuff I picked up since my last birthday. Some of this needed cleaning out the box to remove static/pops

 It's really easy to use, so sometimes I just dig the fact I can hit the start button and go. And the sound, it's not bad at all. I mean the more expensive table setup does sound better, but it's in the nuances. For the most part this table just hits a sweet spot

 The belt was obviously better quality, it was much more rugged than the rubberband that came with the table. The stylus was tougher to tell, it looked more or less exactly the same as the stock one. Overall everything sounds good, though of course many would argue you can't get good sound out of such a *cheap* table.  EDIT 5/17/2011  I'm still using this despite having a much *better* table that sports a Shure mx97e cartridge

 Now what makes this one so special aside from the budget price tag is the built-in phono preamp. So unlike other turntables you'd normally buy out of the box, the phono preamp along with a few cable adapters let you hook this turntable up to any stereo amp, receiver, computer, boombox, bluetooth speaker or whatever else with an analog audio jack.  All you have to do is hit the start button It's going to spin the platter lift the tone arm Rotate it over to the beginning of the record and gently lower it into that groove Oh Okay, and when the record is finished it will also automatically return The tone arm to the rest and stop that platter. It stops automatically You can hit the stop button and you can start it with one push of one button, which is very cool What an amazing amazing full-featured fully automatic turntable. All right. Now, let's try a seven-inch disc Okay

 This is a dirty old scratchy copy of take five by the dave brubeck quartet Now don't forget to flip this down to seven inch Why it needs to know how far in to drop that needle when you hit start and besides that it's the same functionality as we saw before Just hit the start button It's now spinning 45 rpms and it's rotating the stylus to that seven inch disc mark All Right guys that was and is the audio technica lp 60 Even approved by vinyl snobs and also approved by recordology. I think it sounds great I think the features are amazing for the price and I think that it has a good sound build quality Feature set and you know, I just like it all the way around everything about it is good in my opinion I think this would be a great turntable If you're wanting to move from an all-in-one or a suitcase player sort of to the next level This is a good second turntable If you've started with one of those And if it's your first record player, this would be a good record player as well To have full automatic control at this price is just is amazing and audio technica That is a good product and I think you're going to have a lot of happiness and a lot of enjoyment with this turntable All right, guys. I purchased this turntable a month ago and have used it nearly non-stop since. It's certainly not the best turntable in the world, but for all the features this fully-automatic turntable offers, there really isn't very much competition, especially when one considers what you would need to spend for a true upgrade. As it comes also comes with a phono preamp that sounds better than many cheap external preamps, using this turntable is as simple as plugging it into a set of powered speakers, dropping a record on, and pressing Start.  Build quality is acceptable for the price: the chassis is lightweight plastic, the feet do not offer a lot of vibration damping, but the platter is made out of aluminum

 As it comes also comes with a phono preamp that sounds better than many cheap external preamps, using this turntable is as simple as plugging it into a set of powered speakers, dropping a record on, and pressing Start. My simple ears detected no appreciable inner-groove distortion.  You will notice that there is no counterweight on the tonearm, nor is there an adjustable anti-skate feature- all of these are moot because the table has been designed for use with only one headshell/cartridge/stylus combo and tracking force and anti-skate have been set appropriately

  Playback is consistent and enjoyable for most music, but wow and flutter are definitely noticeable for passages that need consistent playback to sound correct. The guitar sustains on The Beastie Boys' "She's Crafty" suffered a bit as the pitch did tend to wobble. Excellent, with a small caveat.

 The record spun, the needle picked itself up, moved over into the correct position, and I was listening to a record that hasn't been played in over 30 years. Wow!  To get an idea of how well the record player itself performed, I went out and bought myself the Back In Black album from AC/DC the next day to see how some of the new, thicker vinyl would sound on it. I was seriously blown away. I've got a HUGE collection of MP3s, but honestly, this sounds better

 Whether or not the weight of the device has anything at all to do with the sound quality, I don't know... but I'm inclined to believe its impact is minimal

  So the hunt began for a cheap alternative that doesn't require much work to sound decent. I pulled the trigger on this little gem based primarily on price. After reading some reviews that it was "too light" and what have you, I was a little worried that I might have bought more of a toy instead of audio equipment. I was wrong

  According to other comments, there are better cartridges to be had for this, as well as an improved belt of some sort. I don't know anything about either, but it's on the table anyways.  So, long story short, if you're looking for a very sharp looking, easy to use, easy to assemble and maintain record player to try out vinyl, this is your best option.

It does its job

  Being as affordable as it is, you see where they cut the corners. It's very light weight, so you will make sure that you have its surface pretty well isolated from excessive vibration. You can also see the cost cutting on the simple control buttons. They are very light plastic buttons that you toggle in to active the arm and the speed etc

 I am able to start collecting again and that is what I want, to be able to enjoy the collection. I feel at this price point, this is worth dipping your toe back in the pond without having to spend crazy hard core audiophile money to do it. I know over time if I keep it up and continue to enjoy it, I can upgrade to something else more hardy later. But for this price point, I'm very happy with the sound, the ease of setup, the price

Good sound for the price point

Pros: I've owned this turntable for a year and 3 months at the time of this writing. It sounds very good and the price can't be beat. I like the fully-automatic operation and enjoy watching it move around like a jukebox. It's a good little workhorse that I've been using almost daily since buying it

 how am I supposed to adjust the speed with the platter upright and spinning and be able to use a screwdriver on the bottom of the turntable? Good question. The answer is it's a royal pain in the ***! I first had to buy a strobe card, since the turntable doesn't have a built-in strobe pattern, and use a work light with a true incandescent bulb (needed for the strobe pattern). I had to sit with the turntable balanced on the corner of my entertainment center with a record spinning and carefully adjust the speed with a screwdriver. And the speed adjustment is a finicky thing

  The other con of this review isn't a big complaint. The built-in phono-stage isn't good. This should be expected of any turntable with line-out. It gives everything a harsh sound, not warm at all

OK, great amp and speakers. Have those myself. Not sure you need the DAC as you’ll discover the Audiolab’s DAC is pretty good, but as everybody but me seems to be convinced that an external DAC is the passport to audiophile pleasure and credibility, we’ll let that pass for the moment.

I don’t find the Dentons too shrill, but I’m 65 so I guess I don’t hear as much up there as younger ones do.  Nonetheless, I’m going to implement the “proven” solution of replacing one of each speaker’s link strips with a 1-ohm 5 watt resistor to balance the sound a little better. But I love the Dentons and next to the Lintons, my main speakers, they stand up really well. Eventually they’ll be the rear speakers for my own version of surround, and the mains for my mono system (which you’ll realise will be at the other end of the room).

I have the AT LP120X - I assume yours is the older, non”x” model which is better built but has sound issues with the phono preamp, even when theoretically bypassed. However, I only have it for 78s. It does OK on LPs but compared directly with my aged Thorens TD160 it’s some way short. I also have a Rega Planar 2 for mono LPs (remember the mono system?). That’s a significant upgrade over the AT120, old model or new, but cheaper than the Planar 3 and, critically, less upgradeable. The 3 is a potential money pit as you can upgrade it to the full Planar 6 spec. I find the 2 is pretty good and luckily I caught an ex-demo one at around 25% off. Plenty of other options, though, so worth checking some out. I tend to favour belt-drive, and the Rega being UK-made was a plus for me.

I’d had the Audiolab amp for about a year before I realised it has no tone controls. I just never use them. Hence my interest in the speaker fix above. The resistors are on the slow boat from China, but I’ll report on that as soon as they arrive. The process comes up in one of the Denton reviews. I bought the Dentons on spec during the lockdown and have been well impressed. They improved after about 50-100 hours proper playing, as far as I can estimate, so if yours are still new I’d give them a good running in before you move them on.

Marks out of ten, now that’s a bit difficult. I’m not saying it’s unimprovable, but the Audiolab/Denton combo works really well and I’d say it’s a more grown-up system than most. Everyone who’s listened to my Dentons or Lintons comes away impressed; more consistently than any others I’ve had. But we’re talking your ears, your taste. I’d say hang on to them until you’re certain you NEED to change them and have auditioned something you like better. Spend some time and money on your vinyl playback and listen to as much as you can on your system and to as many other systems as you can. And give the Audiolab DAC a good workout while you’re at it!

Rate my audio system

The TD160 with the right cartridge sounds better than pretty much anything you’ll find new under $1000 or so. I have a TD147 which is similar to the TD160. Put a nice cartridge with a microline or shibata stylus on there, and you’ll have a brilliant setup. Edit: It looks like you have an AT3600L on there

Do I sell this and grab a mid range table for day to day listening?  Or is the juice absolutely worth the squeeze if I tear this thing down and refurbish/update it?

Some basic back story, I purchased this TD 160 years ago, planning to refurbish it.  Well, kids and houses happen, and I never got around to it.  I use it, but feel like it needs the love of someone who would appreciate its nature more than I am able to.  I think I need something that is turnkey.

For reference, I don't have a high end setup, just a pair of Edifier - R1700BT and a budget preamp.
