We don't have any metal in here, we don't have any crazy materials, but it's actually quite a stiff flex, and I think the thickness of that wood core, that ultra-power wood core, and the fact that it's bent in a pretty significant cambered shape, that's where you really get that stability. And that's where that stability is coming from. Now you also get some nice maneuverability, too

 Hi, skiers. I'm Jeff from SkiEssentials.com. Welcome to our 2021 ski test videos. Today we're going to talk about the Backland 107 from Atomic. Atomic puts this in their touring range, and it is a really, really good choice for a touring ski. You know, if you were to put an Atomic Shift binding on here, it's really good for that application.

 But I think it's important to note that you don't necessarily have to only tour on this ski. I think you could have a lot of fun on it in the resort, too. But the reason why it's in the touring collection is because it's exceptionally lightweight.

 So this is a 189 in my hand, and it is just fantastically light, extremely lightweight. And basically the build of this ski is pretty straightforward. They use the ultra-power wood core. Atomic's got a few different versions of a wood core. This one's pretty darn powerful.

 They've got Horizon Tech up here in the tip, so it's kind of like a boat hull shape in the tip adds some float up there. You know, at 107 underfoot, this thing is definitely designed for soft snow use. And that's largely it. You know, it's pretty much a vertical sidewall ski.

 It does kind of taper that vertical sidewall as you reach the tips and the tails, and it's not 100% vertical. It's kind of like a step sidewall, angled sidewall, which there are actually some performance benefits to that. But yeah, that's about it.

 And that's really all you need in a ski like this. You know, it comes in around 1500 grams. I could be a little off on that, but I'm pretty sure I'm pretty darn close to being right. And so it's light, but you actually get some good stability out of it, too.

 Quite a bit of camber underfoot, which I think is interesting to see on a ski that's 107 underfoot. You know, this is pretty high rise camber, and there's obviously some kind of snap and energy to it. Even just as I'm decambering it here, you can feel the ski you want to give back.

 Plenty of tip rocker. Tip rocker starts about where my hand is right now. A little bit less tail rocker because this is a directional shape. It's not like a twin tip free ride ski or anything like that.

 So, performance wise, obviously we get that lightweight feel for the uphill. If you're using this as a touring ski, if you're putting an atomic shift on here, it's going to be great. It's efficient for the uphill, which is really important. You don't want to tire yourself out there in the backcountry.

 Now downhill performance, this thing might surprise you because even though it's this lightweight, it's actually got some pretty darn good stability to it, too.

 So although you get that powerful feel, you also get a lot of quickness, a lot of playfulness, and a lot of maneuverability out of it.

 So, you know, as I started this video, I think the ideal situation for this ski is to put a binding like the Shift on it, but I certainly wouldn't hesitate personally to ski this with just an alpine binding if you wanted, like, specifically a lightweight kind of side-country powder ski, you could put an alpine binding on these and still have a lot of fun on them.

 So that's the Backland 107 from Atomic. Great ski. It inspired a new ski, the Backland 100, so check that out if this sounds interesting, but you want something a little narrower.

It's inspired by the hull of a surfboard basically and it just gives the ski a little bit looser feel and also a little bit more float in soft snow which is really cool

Now looking at shape 107 underfoot so obviously the ski is geared towards some softer snow and that theory is reflected in the amount of tip rocker so tip rocker starts right where my hand is. There's plenty of tip rocker in this ski you know combined with that Horizon Tech not only is that going to boost float it's again furthering boosting the maneuverability factor and then we get a little bit less tail rocker back here but still enough that you're not going to feel locked into a turn

 So it's just a different graphic but in the same exact ski. So that's important to remember I think that way when you're shopping and you know maybe there's a link that's sold out in a certain ski you can always move to the other one if you want to. Now all that said this ski is awesome 107 underfoot pretty darn lightweight. This is the 167 centimeter length and without a binding it comes in right under 1500 grams

 I personally like when companies do this the men's ski and the women's ski

 structurally and both and shape as well. They are the same so it kind of doesn't really matter

 which one you choose. If you're a guy and you want a shorter length and you like this graphic

 there's no reason why you can't choose this and vice versa. So it's just a different

 graphic but in the same exact ski. So that's important to remember I think that way when

 you're shopping and you know maybe there's a link that's sold out in a certain ski you can always

 move to the other one if you want to. Now all that said this ski is awesome 107 underfoot

 pretty darn lightweight. This is the 167 centimeter length and without a binding it comes in right

 under 1500 grams. Even with this shift binding on here it's 2350 grams. So quite lightweight,

 very impressive that Atomic can achieve that especially considering the performance that

 they achieve as well. So before we get into that let's kind of talk about construction real quick.

 We use an ultralight wood core in this ski. We also use carbon backbone so you can actually see

 it in this window in the graphic of the ski. You can see the longitudinal carbon strips kind of

 laying on top of that that wood core. Carbon's a great material for ski construction you know

 that's that's not a surprise. It's not like that that's big news. Companies have been using carbon

 for years and years now. I think it works really really well in this ski so that allows Atomic

 to keep the weight down and it also kind of boosts the ski's energy and responsiveness and

 and just fun factor in my opinion. Now those are kind of the important elements for construction.

 We also get a DuraCap sidewall so that's more how they just finish the ski. What's really cool

 about it is Atomic's kind of blending a vertical sidewall so on the camera there the white portion

 of the sidewall that you can see. That's traditional vertical sidewall and then they just use like a

 partial cap construction which is really just designed to boost durability if you're not getting

 as many top sheet chips and stuff like that. Then we get Horizon Tech up here in the tip.
