 A lot of the testers that we've had on it over the past couple of years have really specifically noted at how stable and how powerful it can feel, and I give a lot of credit to the camber shape. We don't have any metal in here, we don't have any crazy materials, but it's actually quite a stiff flex, and I think the thickness of that wood core, that ultra-power wood core, and the fact that it's bent in a pretty significant cambered shape, that's where you really get that stability. And that's where that stability is coming from. Now you also get some nice maneuverability, too

 If you're using this as a touring ski, if you're putting an atomic shift on here, it's going to be great. It's efficient for the uphill, which is really important. You don't want to tire yourself out there in the backcountry. Now downhill performance, this thing might surprise you because even though it's this lightweight, it's actually got some pretty darn good stability to it, too

 I think you could have a lot of fun on it in the resort, too. But the reason why it's in the touring collection is because it's exceptionally lightweight. So this is a 189 in my hand, and it is just fantastically light, extremely lightweight. And basically the build of this ski is pretty straightforward

The Backland 107 has a robust build in an ~1650g ski (182cm) and features a full sidewall for better durability and a stable ride.

Sure, the lighter setup may have matched the soft, deep pillowy snow conditions in some spots. With my timidity that day, which could have resulted in a ligament-tearing tumble, I pivoted to wanting decidedly heavier gear with more oomph to match less-than-perfect conditions.

 I could do better going from edge to edge in a skinnier ski with less rocker up front.

 Jason survived the transition from free-heel kool-aid drinker to faster and lighter (think AT), and safer, are better.

 That's way, way more of a twin tip where this is truly a directional ski. But we do get some nice long tail rocker as well, at least relatively long for a directional ski. And I always really like the taper design to these skis as well. So you can kind of see, especially in the tail here, it's in the tip as well

 It is pretty darn light even with this shift binding on it in a 189 length. I'm kind of curious what this is going to come out to. Yeah just 2,600 grams. So pretty darn light for a big ski with a relatively strong touring binding on it in the shift

 The first time I skied it I was just blown away by how strong it felt. It doesn't maybe have the vibration damping of some heavy skis. Like if you were to line this up straight next to a Maverick, Mavericks are going to feel a little smoother and damper so to speak. But definitely a strong stable ski

 So great choice for anybody that's going to be heading out into the backcountry this season and needs the width for softer snow conditions. Lucky you because that's like the best part of skiing, getting to go touring and getting some fresh powder.  So having a little bit less tail rocker makes sense to have that straighter cut to it, but we still get plenty of tip rocker, you know, this shovel has some nice splay to it, that rocker starts down about here, so great flotation out of this 106 in that backcountry snow. So yeah, if you're looking for something that will handle, you know, deeper snow in the backcountry and you're looking for that wider option for your touring ski, I think this Hannibal 106 makes a great choice.  And then a nice metal skin fixation on the tail, you know, we don't really see metal a whole lot back here, so that's a pretty nice little upgrade from Fischer. And we've seen that tail basically in all the Rangers leading up to this, which is kind of the Ranger TI versions, which is kind of a nod to their sense of quality and, you know, just the commitment to making good skis from top to bottom. Again, 171 here, we are looking at a 21 meter turn radius, so pretty long, pretty straight in the cut, that definitely helps for skinning efficiency. And then when you get to the top, you know, you don't really want something that's super turny or hooky, especially because we're dealing with less tail rocker than we see in some of the more alpine oriented skis

 Welcome to our 2023 ski test. We've got a Fisher Hannibal 106C for you today, nice wider option in our touring department. Definitely more of that touring specific ski rather than a hybrid or 50-50 that we see a lot of these days. Definitely has the weight to warrant that uphill efficiency, has a little bit wider of a shape for more of a downhill use, but I wouldn't really say that this has a whole lot of a resort or a lift served application, maybe when needed or to access other areas, but definitely not a daily driver in terms of downhill capacity, kind of like what we see from Blizzard Hustle or Nordica Enforcer Unlimited

Although, you know, with the advancement in this alpine touring segment, you definitely do get better performance making these skis really well rounded and versatile. You know, if you have more of that hybrid binding on it, you can use them in the resort, but really they're better suited for backcountry and fresh snow. Starting with the construction, they do have a Polonia wood core

 You know, as these get wider, they do lose a little bit of that 4F stiffness, but this one's still got a good flex to it, going to give you good energy. Extremely light as a result, 1540 grams per ski here in the 178, and it's just, you know, when you pick up something this big and it's this light, it's just impressive, and you know it's going to be easy on the uphill. It's a little bit on the wider side for, you know, the touring application, just from a skinning standpoint, but when you get to the top, you're going to get much better flotation than on a narrower ski, really makes it all worth the while, you know, when you're at the top of a big mountain and you have something this wide on your feet, and it's going to keep you afloat. That is a nice feeling

On the 22 meter turn radius on this ski as well, so a little bit straighter of a cut, we see that more often in the touring skis, just because it's easier to skin on, as well as when you get to those big mountains and wide open terrain, the ski isn't as hooky or as grabby, it doesn't want to pull you across the fall line, putting more emphasis on the skier and their ability and desire to make a certain shape turn. We do get some pretty dramatic rocker on this ski, especially in the tail, I'm sorry, the shovel, some decent camber underfoot for edge grip for when the conditions are sketchy, you definitely want to have that camber for, you know, holding on tight, but we do see that rocker profile starting well below the taper line here, and then going up and pretty dramatic splay at the top here

 You know, if you have more of that hybrid binding on it, you can use them in the resort, but really they're better suited for backcountry and fresh snow.
