 A lot of the testers that we've had on it over the past couple of years have really specifically noted at how stable and how powerful it can feel, and I give a lot of credit to the camber shape. We don't have any metal in here, we don't have any crazy materials, but it's actually quite a stiff flex, and I think the thickness of that wood core, that ultra-power wood core, and the fact that it's bent in a pretty significant cambered shape, that's where you really get that stability. And that's where that stability is coming from. Now you also get some nice maneuverability, too

 If you're using this as a touring ski, if you're putting an atomic shift on here, it's going to be great. It's efficient for the uphill, which is really important. You don't want to tire yourself out there in the backcountry. Now downhill performance, this thing might surprise you because even though it's this lightweight, it's actually got some pretty darn good stability to it, too

 I think you could have a lot of fun on it in the resort, too. But the reason why it's in the touring collection is because it's exceptionally lightweight. So this is a 189 in my hand, and it is just fantastically light, extremely lightweight. And basically the build of this ski is pretty straightforward

The Backland 107 has a robust build in an ~1650g ski (182cm) and features a full sidewall for better durability and a stable ride.

Sure, the lighter setup may have matched the soft, deep pillowy snow conditions in some spots. With my timidity that day, which could have resulted in a ligament-tearing tumble, I pivoted to wanting decidedly heavier gear with more oomph to match less-than-perfect conditions.

 I could do better going from edge to edge in a skinnier ski with less rocker up front.

 Jason survived the transition from free-heel kool-aid drinker to faster and lighter (think AT), and safer, are better.

 That's way, way more of a twin tip where this is truly a directional ski. But we do get some nice long tail rocker as well, at least relatively long for a directional ski. And I always really like the taper design to these skis as well. So you can kind of see, especially in the tail here, it's in the tip as well

 It is pretty darn light even with this shift binding on it in a 189 length. I'm kind of curious what this is going to come out to. Yeah just 2,600 grams. So pretty darn light for a big ski with a relatively strong touring binding on it in the shift

 The first time I skied it I was just blown away by how strong it felt. It doesn't maybe have the vibration damping of some heavy skis. Like if you were to line this up straight next to a Maverick, Mavericks are going to feel a little smoother and damper so to speak. But definitely a strong stable ski

 So great choice for anybody that's going to be heading out into the backcountry this season and needs the width for softer snow conditions. Lucky you because that's like the best part of skiing, getting to go touring and getting some fresh powder. So if that's kind of what you have in mind this season, if that's what you have in store, awesome for you and this is a perfect, perfect tool for the job. So check this thing out on SkiEssentials

 Pretty impressively light for what it is and how well it holds. Decent camber underfoot, but definitely more so in the tip and tail in terms of a rocker profile and to get that flotation, the rocker is one thing, the taper shape is another. So pretty tapered here, that's going to cut through the snow easily and give you that smoother performance and definitely a tapered shape in the tail. So widest parts right about here, so all of this back section of the ski is going to cut through the snow really well

 This we got a new ski here, this is an Atomic Backland 98. This is a women's version of the ski, the men's have a 100, so just a little bit narrower, but same ski overall. These backland skis have been pretty popular for a while, kind of that good mix of resort and backcountry, light enough for backcountry, but strong and stable enough for resort skiing. Just a really nice mix of all those performance qualities

 So pretty tapered here, that's going to cut through the snow easily and give you that smoother performance and definitely a tapered shape in the tail. So widest parts right about here, so all of this back section of the ski is going to cut through the snow really well. Also in terms of flotation, Atomic's HRZN or Horizon tips make a big difference with that. So what they've done here is they've kind of milled out this area in the tips, make it more of a convex shape and that mimics like what a boathole does in the water

 So they bevel the sides of the tips here making a more rounded shape. That allows the ski to stay on top, surf and plane over the snow. They increase the surface area without adding width. So that's a way that they make this float really well for its size

 Dura-cap construction, so it's half sidewall, half cap from here to here and then full cap through the tail and into the shovel. So light and easy on the swing weight. This is the 164 ways in Atomic States at 1200 grams per ski which is pretty darn light. They also use their carbon backbone on this ski so they inlay carbon stringers, you know, from the mid-foot back and then from the binding front forward

6 meter turn radius. So it is more on that s-turn type of path here. So you know, expect to be making shorter, more energetic turns on a ski like this. Again, for its weight, it gives a surprising amount of energy

 Pretty straight through the tail. You do get fantastic snap out of that. You know, if you're using it even just on a groomer, it just reacts really well. Excellent energy out of the turn
