 A lot of the testers that we've had on it over the past couple of years have really specifically noted at how stable and how powerful it can feel, and I give a lot of credit to the camber shape. We don't have any metal in here, we don't have any crazy materials, but it's actually quite a stiff flex, and I think the thickness of that wood core, that ultra-power wood core, and the fact that it's bent in a pretty significant cambered shape, that's where you really get that stability. And that's where that stability is coming from. Now you also get some nice maneuverability, too

 If you're using this as a touring ski, if you're putting an atomic shift on here, it's going to be great. It's efficient for the uphill, which is really important. You don't want to tire yourself out there in the backcountry. Now downhill performance, this thing might surprise you because even though it's this lightweight, it's actually got some pretty darn good stability to it, too

 I think you could have a lot of fun on it in the resort, too. But the reason why it's in the touring collection is because it's exceptionally lightweight. So this is a 189 in my hand, and it is just fantastically light, extremely lightweight. And basically the build of this ski is pretty straightforward

The Backland 107 has a robust build in an ~1650g ski (182cm) and features a full sidewall for better durability and a stable ride.

Sure, the lighter setup may have matched the soft, deep pillowy snow conditions in some spots. With my timidity that day, which could have resulted in a ligament-tearing tumble, I pivoted to wanting decidedly heavier gear with more oomph to match less-than-perfect conditions.

 I could do better going from edge to edge in a skinnier ski with less rocker up front.

 Jason survived the transition from free-heel kool-aid drinker to faster and lighter (think AT), and safer, are better.

 That's way, way more of a twin tip where this is truly a directional ski. But we do get some nice long tail rocker as well, at least relatively long for a directional ski. And I always really like the taper design to these skis as well. So you can kind of see, especially in the tail here, it's in the tip as well

 It is pretty darn light even with this shift binding on it in a 189 length. I'm kind of curious what this is going to come out to. Yeah just 2,600 grams. So pretty darn light for a big ski with a relatively strong touring binding on it in the shift

 The first time I skied it I was just blown away by how strong it felt. It doesn't maybe have the vibration damping of some heavy skis. Like if you were to line this up straight next to a Maverick, Mavericks are going to feel a little smoother and damper so to speak. But definitely a strong stable ski

 So great choice for anybody that's going to be heading out into the backcountry this season and needs the width for softer snow conditions. Lucky you because that's like the best part of skiing, getting to go touring and getting some fresh powder. So if that's kind of what you have in mind this season, if that's what you have in store, awesome for you and this is a perfect, perfect tool for the job. So check this thing out on SkiEssentials

 Then we get Horizon Tech up here in the tip. That's an awesome technology that's exclusive to Atomic. Some other companies use similar similar designs in their skis but Horizon Tech is Atomic's own proprietary technology so it's just kind of a beveled finish. It's inspired by the hull of a surfboard basically and it just gives the ski a little bit looser feel and also a little bit more float in soft snow which is really cool

Now looking at shape 107 underfoot so obviously the ski is geared towards some softer snow and that theory is reflected in the amount of tip rocker so tip rocker starts right where my hand is. There's plenty of tip rocker in this ski you know combined with that Horizon Tech not only is that going to boost float it's again furthering boosting the maneuverability factor and then we get a little bit less tail rocker back here but still enough that you're not going to feel locked into a turn

 So it's just a different graphic but in the same exact ski. So that's important to remember I think that way when you're shopping and you know maybe there's a link that's sold out in a certain ski you can always move to the other one if you want to. Now all that said this ski is awesome 107 underfoot pretty darn lightweight. This is the 167 centimeter length and without a binding it comes in right under 1500 grams

 The way they build it though is pretty interesting, they got half cap, half sidewall, going to about here and here, and then full cap going to the tips and tails. So that full cap does a good job of keeping that ski as one cohesive unit, making it very light and quick. And then that sidewall underfoot does a good job with the edge grip, so we're not normally talking about the edge grip as a strong point in a 107, but I would say that this is one of those exceptions where you get that light, strong ski that does have very good edge grip. And then in terms of flotation, this thing is really meant for soft snow, not terrible amount of rocker there, sorry, camber underfoot, it's pretty minimal, and then in the tip and tail we're looking at more rocker for sure
