Have the Asus ZenWiFi AX mesh in our 2000 sq.ft., 2-story house, and no problems with 2 iPhones and 2 iPad Pro's. They're always connected, and the reliablity and wireless coverage of the mesh is great

I've spent the last couple hours looking for a mid-tier mesh system for my home. My 10+ year old netgear router seem to have died (no longer powers on). This means no WiFi at home. In our current house, coverage has always been bad, because the router is in one corner or our home, which is basically a square footprint with rooms divided by interior walls, about 2000sqft of needed coverage. I have a CAT cable run to the living room, so I can do an access point or hardwired mesh node. 

Long story short, I starting looking at the Deco X60 kit, the Nest kit, and Eero kit, and basically all of them have recent reviews about how connections frequently drop for iOS devices. There's lots of reference to turning off 5ghz and turning off a Private Address setting on the iOS devices. Bottom line is that this seems like a pain in the ass, regardless of whether it is Apple's fault or an issue with new WiFi 6 hardware. 

I'm paying for half-gig service from my ISP, so would avoiding WiFi 6 and sticking with previous generation mesh kits be a decent option? 

My other option is to get into Ubiquiti. My brother has an ACPRO access point he can give me. So maybe I should get a UniFi Dream Machine and put the access point in the living room?

There are Home, Devices, Insight, Family, and Settings buttons positioned along the bottom of the screen. Use the Devices button to see a list of all of your network clients and to view upload/download statistics, block internet access, and assign a bandwidth threshold for that client. Tapping the Insights button allows you to search for available AIMesh nodes, share your Wi-Fi credentials, enable the remote Connection feature that lets you use the app when you're away from home, and see how many malicious sites were identified and blocked.&nbsp;Tap the Family button to create profiles for each family member and assign parental controls and access schedules, and tap the Settings button to launch a menu with all available system-wide settings options

I tapped the first node, at which point I was asked to give my new network a name and a password. You can opt to separate the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands at this point or do it later if you prefer. Next, I created an account and waited a couple of minutes for the router to be configured and optimized

 At a distance of 30 feet, the ZenWiFi AC was just 2Mbps slower than the TP-Link Deco M9 Plus and 2Mbps faster than the Zyxel Multy X. It beat the EnGenius ESR580 by 20Mbps.

 And the secondary node didn't realize its IP is useless until the main node gets its own, signalling "all Good" while network was down.  When that was over, it assigned clients to the wrong node, and there was no direct button to move them, we had to poke around. On the app, it's hard to tell which node you're configuring, since it names them the same and doesn't give any other hint.  As usual, no way of continuously monitoring bandwidth between nodes/client-node bandwidth, so we had to guess the optimal positions and assignments

Poor UI made it hard to optimize speed.  Entering WiFi credentials was easy, so was reaching the admin page. But it wasn't smooth.  First, it never mentioned we need to turn both nodes on before starting the setup process, or that it would help to start in the same room until the functionality is established (to watch the LEDs, because that's all you get for a while)

 The "optimize" button may or may not do anything, it's hard to even tell when it's done "optimizing".  Now, our speed for a 2000sqft, airy home swings between 450Mbps and 20Mbps (yes!) where it used to be 150Mbps with a $50 non-mesh router. Overall, it's better than before, but, frankly, the online reviews and marketing claims are much stronger than what we got.  We'll try getting support and fixing this later

Setup not intuitive, works somewhat

 I sent a message to Asus tech support with no response but hopefully they will address this in a software or firmware update. Asus provides Free security while most other manufacturers doNot. Unfortunately the browser interface allows for a easier setup and to fix vulnerabilities compared to the IOS app. If you follow the above rules you will be very happy with this router

4ghz only it’s best to assign them to a separate network ID. Same for 5ghz devices. If you go for the default option of one network ID your just asking for problems. Another thing I noticed is the web browser interface allows for more advanced setting but seems to be getting quirky to log in and when changing to different tabs

 The regular 2.4ghz network works correctly it’s just the Guest Network that has this issue. I sent a message to Asus tech support with no response but hopefully they will address this in a software or firmware update. Asus provides Free security while most other manufacturers doNot

Asus Mesh Solves Problems like “All” Mesh has some quirks

* Cheapest (Possible Fix): Buy a Mesh Router system like ASUS ZenWifi Ax6000 and try to put one AP in the Office and the other in my Living room that may deliver better speeds 

* Expensive (Best): Pull up the entire cable and rerun it with Cat7(a), also install a possible intermediary switch to boost length/signal right before going into the underground conduit

 I've had three tradesmen over to quote for putting in ethernet, and two just refused to do it whilst the  third quoted $4k to put it in conduit stuck to the walls everywhere which would look awful. We don't have coaxial anywhere that could be used either.

I need to improve the wi-fi performance in my home. I have a three-storey house, with some brick/concrete walls which create dead spots. I cannot use powerline adapters (I have used some that were rated to 300mbps, but I rarely get more than 30mbps through them despite having 300mbps internet service to the property). I cannot wire ethernet cable, as it's just too difficult with all the brick and concrete and two flights of stairs - no partition/sheetrock walls or conduit makes it a huge pain

So I'm looking at MESH wi-fi. My Technicolor router is MESH capable apparently, but I'm guessing I'll need to disable the wifi on the router anyway and use a new MESH system instead. I want the best performance possible, and I run LOTS of devices at once. I have a large family, and work at home, so at any time we are likely to be using 2-3 streaming devices, 2-3 PCs and laptops to work/game, 4-6 phones to stream, multiple Alexa/Google Home devices etc

  Cons: 1. The price is a little bit higher compare to a few brands, but still worth it. 2. Not good angle for power connector

  Pros: 1. Easy to setup when you are using mobile APP, and easy to see the status on the APP. 2. All the smart devices and security camera are getting good signal and very good coverage for the whole house include back yard and garage

 5. The WiFi speed is really good compare to my UBNT UniFi AP and Cisco AP.  Cons: 1. The price is a little bit higher compare to a few brands, but still worth it

 All right so now I have the wireless access point connected right here and what this is going to do is show us if you have a really big house and you need to connect some of your devices to the mesh access point which is wireless to the other router like maybe you're getting bad speeds here with just a single router and you need to add another one. We're going to see what kind of speeds we can get from the mesh access point. So I'm going to go ahead and run a speed test here and see what kind of speeds we get. Looks like we're going to see about let's see 300 over 300

 But even though it's dual-band the five gigahertz channel has the capability to use 160 megahertz channels which allows you to get ridiculous speeds with devices that support it. And like the Velop you can also buy multiple Hydras and mesh them together using the intelligent mesh system and you can even wirelessly mesh the Hydra with the Velop or vice versa to get even more flexibility. All right so now I have the wireless access point connected right here and what this is going to do is show us if you have a really big house and you need to connect some of your devices to the mesh access point which is wireless to the other router like maybe you're getting bad speeds here with just a single router and you need to add another one.  So as you can see that is faster than what we saw when we connected directly to the router downstairs. So again this is the benefit of Wi-Fi 6. Okay so here is a chart of the speed test results that we got from both routers at all locations and as you can see these are fantastic speeds in pretty much every situation. I was especially impressed by the speeds from the wireless mesh access point

 It took a few minutes, but I didn't have to do anything, and that's about as easy as router setup gets. The appeal of the Velop system is that it's a mesh network, so I plugged in the other nodes throughout the house. The app then automatically joined them to the mesh network, and let me know if I'd place them in a good spot to ensure solid connectivity. This one I placed in a bedroom on a different floor from the main node

 Now this mesh system is designed to provide up to 8100 square feet of wireless coverage. That completely covered the inside of my house and the backyard, but I went for a walk down the street to see how far I could get a WiFi signal. The strength started to drop off as I walked away from the house, because it's now having to go through brick. However, I got two houses away before losing the signal

 However, you can use the mobile app or the computer app to tweak performance and functionality. This includes features like device prioritization and parental controls. Running the speed test, you can see my download speed is showing up as 593 megabits per second. That's actually slightly over the half gig internet service I pay for

 The app then automatically joined them to the mesh network, and let me know if I'd place them in a good spot to ensure solid connectivity. This one I placed in a bedroom on a different floor from the main node. It's an area that traditionally gets spotty WiFi. There's a game console here, and I plugged it directly into the Velop node with Ethernet, so it gets the maximum speed possible

Linksys Velop AX4200 Wi-Fi 6 Whole Home Mesh System Review

  Not sure it's common to all mesh wifi, but Velop needs a lot of node to have the equivalent signal strength and coverage as in my case I ended up using all 6 of it to get rid of dead spot. I knew 3 nodes may not be enough but I expected 4 would cut it. Yet I found myself kept adding more to the mesh.  While I was at it, I also grabbed a deal from Staples for 2 dual band Velop mini mesh node, the ac1300, but ended up returning it as its backhaul throughput is too low while wifi signal is as strong as the tri-band, so other than interference it does no good
