 We do find that the BD shoe accommodates wide feet better than the Arc’teryx, although the Konseal offers more abrasion resistance with its ripstop mesh upper. All in all, the Mission LT an intriguing alternative to have on your radar, but the Konseal is the more proven design.

 As we’ve come to expect in an approach shoe, the Konseal FL is stiffer than a hiking shoe or trail runner and lacks the cushioning underfoot that many hikers might be used to. In addition, you get a fairly narrow fit that doesn’t allow the forefoot much room to breathe or swell (more on this in "Fit and Sizing" below). On the other hand, the same features that detract from flex and cushion (a plastic midsole with raised sidewalls and firm EVA foam) do lend extra stability and protection, particularly on rocky, cross-country terrain. In the end, we wouldn’t recommend the Konseal FL as a dedicated hiker, but it’s a great match for off-trail scrambling and climbers who prioritize performance on rock over comfort on the trail

 Hi, Katie here with Get Out There Magazine, this is my review of the Arc'teryx Conseal FL Approach Shoe. The conceals have lots of great features. My top three would definitely be Vibram soles, nice long lacing so you can get just the right tension and two grab loops to help you really get your foot in there. The conceals are super awesome, they're really grippy, these shoes are great, they'll totally get you to the top or the bottom of your climbing area

 These are a 7 and a half US but they are a 39 and a third European. So I got the 39 and a third thinking that that would fit me, I usually wear a 39 and I don't mind having a little extra room for my toes but my big toe on my big foot only comes up to right here, so I'm not really getting to take advantage of the little rubbery end of the toe and when I have been climbing in them, my feet do sort of slide forward and backward a little bit. I also found the back gave me a fair bit of pressure when I was hiking in them. Now it's not really their intended use so do take that with a grain of salt

 Also I think there's extra pressure because the sole is quite stiff and it's intended to be that way, of course, so that you can edge and smear and really make the most out of these shoes. Did I say yet that I love the color? Color's awesome. This grey-teal color goes with lots of things, it's really subtle so I'm a really big fan and they're just really sleek and sexy looking. I have no complaints about the shoe other than it just doesn't quite fit my foot so that's alright

Arc'teryx Konseal FL Shoes

Durability seems to have been one of the drivers in the design of the Konseal FL. I’ve found that the two main weak points on approach shoes are the laces and the sidewall in the neighborhood of the knuckle on the baby toe. When climbing and scrambling these two areas wear quickly and, in the case of the sidewall, can cause the premature demise of a great pair of shoes. The Konseal FL’s have specific design features aimed directly at these two weaknesses

 The main difference is found in the width at the ball of the foot where the raised perimeter sidewalls are a bit ridged on my medium width feet. This gives the shoes a feel more akin to a light mountaineering boot than a shoe, especially along the forefoot. However, after a few days or a week they break-in and the resulting fit is quite comfortable and incredibly secure with absolutely no heal movement.

The high quality rubber and variable tread pattern on the Konseal FL’s create a very secure feeling shoe on everything from rock slabs to steep muddy trails.

The design of the to-the-toe laces along with the padded tongue allow the Konseal FL’s an incredibly adaptable fit: a very tight performance fit for climbing and technical scrambling to a loose fit for around town or at the crag. Neither set-up producing any pressure points or issues.

Shoes are perfect for those long days when you're gon na be in varying terrain and a really long approaches. Now the first thing i want to talk about is the upper you've got a lot of different materials here and a lot of features in the upper that keep you comfortable, but also give you that secure fit that you need during your approach. So you've got rough out leather that is incredibly durable over the long haul and it breaks in really well in addition to that, you've got sticky Vibram that goes around pretty much the whole shoe you've got a rubber toe Rand here, and that is sticky Vibram rubber

 Now the first thing i want to talk about is the upper you've got a lot of different materials here and a lot of features in the upper that keep you comfortable, but also give you that secure fit that you need during your approach. So you've got rough out leather that is incredibly durable over the long haul and it breaks in really well in addition to that, you've got sticky Vibram that goes around pretty much the whole shoe you've got a rubber toe Rand here, and that is sticky Vibram rubber. So while some of the other parts of the shoe will break in and fit your feet really well, these parts of the shoe are going to eliminate stretch over time

 You'Ve got an incredibly dense midsole here and it is closed-cell rubber, micropore evie, a rubber, and it's also pretty lightweight so wow. It is a very dense material, a very rigid material. You don't have a whole lot of bend in this shoe. You know if you break it in a little bit: you're gon na have a little bit of Bend, but this really is meant to be a rigid shoe to give you all of that purchase on the rock

 So the midsole here is just as a couple different types of materials, but is meant to last a long time and give a really secure hold moving down to the outsole. You do have Vibram hydro grip, which is the stickiest rubber compound on the market today. So this is going to give you all of that traction that you need now that is mixed with the lugs here. It'S the LA Sportiva impact brake system and the lug pattern is opposing an opposite and that really cuts down on the shock of hard rock

La Sportiva Women's Boulder X Approach Shoes

 The tongue of the shoe is padded, so it feels pretty luxurious for an approach shoe when you slip it on your foot. The interior of the shoe is tight and hugs your foot, making it feel more like a comfy trad shoe than a trail runner or a hiking boot.

La Sportiva’s Boulder X is definitely less minimal than the 5.10 Guide Tennie. The tongue of the shoe is padded, so it feels pretty luxurious for an approach shoe when you slip it on your foot. The interior of the shoe is tight and hugs your foot, making it feel more like a comfy trad shoe than a trail runner or a hiking boot

My only complaint in regards to sizing (and this won’t be an issue for most peopole) is that I had to break the shoes in significantly before I could fit my insoles comfortably. Before then, the snug, conforming nature of the shoe meant that there was no excess room for a light insole. However, after wearing the Boulder X all summer, I can now comfortably fit both my foot and my insole inside.

I consulted a podiatrist who diagnosed plantar fasciitis and Morton's neuroma. He said to get a RIGID shoe with a low rise (it should not bend where shoe soles normally flex on walking)

Over time the padding of the soles of my feet has disappeared (I'm 75+ and have fast-walked daily since early 1970s ) so barefoot it feels like I'm walking on bones.  I'd been wearing Saucony running shoes for decades on the track, but they'd discontinue models whose fit I liked (maddening) and new ones I purchased online. City shoe stores are 1 hr away and salesmen useless anyway--go blank when I ask for a low rise shoe). Best-guess online shoes invariably had constricted forefoot/toe area and I developed issues from improper fit. Over time the padding of the soles of my feet has disappeared (I'm 75+ and have fast-walked daily since early 1970s ) so barefoot it feels like I'm walking on bones

 These shoes are extremely comfortable and I wear them in all kinds of weather. Fantastic grip and stability. The fat round laces are easy to do/undo and tighten (great lacing system) and wear extremely well--no fraying. Absolutely love them
