We guess the reason behind that is the long period of abuse of the X Ultra 4 on the hard surfaces all the time, whereas the XA Pro 3D was being used on the road or sidewalk and has smaller lugs.We found that the Salomon XA Pro 3D is as heavy as hiking shoes. I don’t have high hopes for them in the rain unless I spray them with waterproofing spray. I have goretex sneakers from another brand (not hiking ones) and I think I will stick to them on wetter days, as they have been performing great even on super rainy days in New York.

On a positive note, these are great winter shoes. Good grip on ice, waterproof and keep my feet warm and dry.

I've been wearing these pretty consistently the past week and a half, and I think these would be a slam dunk if I had the perfect size. I usually am a 7.5 in women's sizes, but felt that these run a little big. I would probably wear a 7 in these and it would solve most of the problems I have with the fit

5 is a perfect length fit but not wide enough. I would recommend but not to anyone with an average width size.

Fit and design - one huge flaw for me, and why I will not be continuing to use these - is the lack of a 2nd eyelet at the top of the lacing. This makes it impossible to tighten down for any heel lift. As someone with slender feet, these shoes did not hold up backpacking (carried about 25#) as my heel kept moving around inside the shoe and I got a terrible blister on the inside heel. This is not a location I typically get blisters which helps me know it's the shoe

Very narrow and the arch is in the wrong position. I have been using Salomon for years now. The new Quest 4 and Mid fit fine but something is fundamentally wrong with the new design of the shoes. I have now gone with Scarpa and Keen which are great replacements
