 A lot of people have been complaining about the hiss on this amp and I've been able to eliminate that as a factor by disabling the tweeter. Basically you just take off the front face panel, well the face cloth, and open up the tweeter and just sort of disconnect it and you know tie those wires together and twist ties and voila. It does change the sound a little bit and if you want to get some more treble and you have to push the treble a little bit more but actually it really doesn't make much of a difference but it takes away that annoying hiss that everybody's complaining about. So give it a try

Ampeg BA-115 Demo

 Also put in a Fralin 5% underwound P bass pickup. So it's a lot of pickup for a Squier but with any electric instrument this is to a degree what you're playing. So it's got good coupling to the body with a better bridge, there's nothing wrong with the body and the neck, it's got a really good quality P bass pickup now. This could have been a Duncan, this could have been a DiMarzio, etc

 I went with Fralin because I knew that this would be a good test point for almost any amp that this ever gets played through. So with the 500k audio, linear and 250k audio, everything full up on this Ampeg, I want to roll that down slightly to more of a standard P bassing, I can roll it down more, do some fake Motown stuff. This doesn't have flats, it doesn't have the foam so it's not going to do the full Motown thing. I'm going to palm mute to fake it a little bit or just get a kitchen sponge

 But that's down the line if I wanted to get into expensive additions like a kitchen sponge. The bass came with D'Addario 45-105 nickel strings, those are fine. I put on some DR lowrider 40-100, I like the tension of them and I knew that I had a lot of strength to rebuild and just going with a slightly lighter gauge gave me a leg up on that. As I redevelop my technique, as I redevelop my hand strength, I may go to a thicker gauge on these but I'm really happy with it

Pleasing P-Bass Progress and Testing the Ampeg BA-115

 I figure they were probably thinking that with the input for a CD (or iPod) for play along practice, you are going to want to have those high frequencies so it's not just mud. Plus, maybe you will want to plug in a keyboard or something. Unfortunately they have a hissy amp and the tweeter reveals that. But at the price you are not going to get everything, I suppose

 Compared to that, the Ampeg BA-115 is somewhat more muddy and less detailed. It does not make my bass sound quite as good as it is capable of sounding. I would consider miking up the Markbass for recording, whereas I would not do that with the Ampeg BA-115. Direct would be better

 Research also led me to understand the amp comes with a high level of hiss emanating from a piezo tweeter. But given how well the amp features matched what I was looking for, I figured at worse I could install a switch on the tweeter if the hiss was too obnoxious.  When I finally got the amp, I was happy to find that the hiss was not as bad as I was primed to expect as long as I set the Treble tone control at 12 o' clock or less. It was noticeable for sure, and not pleasant, but not obnoxious

 Above 12 o'clock it is obnoxious. I'm currently using the amp with the Style selector on 3 (flat response), Bass and Mids at 12 o'clock, and Treble dialed down a little. For me, it sounds about as good as that amp can sound at those settings, but my bass has really great tone to begin with.  One may ask why put a tweeter on a bass amp anyway? So many great bass amps never had one

Good at the price

 Before I knew it, it was 10 across the board and the thing had only just kicked in.  I have a cheap no name 10 watt amp that has no low to speak of. I've been cheating and running the bass through that and plugging the bookshelf stereo into the headphone jack of the 10 watt practice amp and that sounds pretty good.  When I decided to buy a "real" amp, I took the wattage of the desktop stereo, which is 75, and added a few for kicks, came up with 100, and found this thing

 It made some promising and frighting cracking and popping noises as I turned it on and plugged in the bass with the volume on 1, and as I turned up the volume to about 3, I could feel the bass kick in. It looks like it should shake the apartment, so I kept inching the volume up. Before I knew it, it was 10 across the board and the thing had only just kicked in.  I have a cheap no name 10 watt amp that has no low to speak of

 I'm not sure how to say this, but my Panasonic bookshelf stereo has deeper, richer, punchier bass. It'll rattle stuff I leave on its little 8 inch speakers, and unlike the Ampeg, I've never turned it anywhere near all of the way up. This Ampeg amp just seems to be struggling.  This is extra annoying because I was thinking it would be nice to have a beefier sound system, and the Ampeg has line in, so I could run a Discman style CD player and other things into the Ampeg and replace the stereo

 The amp got locked in the closet but the smell oozed out, so I put it back in the box and tried to air out the apartment. When I first took it out of the box, the two largest silica packets I've ever seen came out with it. They're about hackey sack sized. I tried again this morning and trying to play this thing, I have a screaming headache

What kind of amp do you use, and why do you like it?

 I encourage you to go to your local dealer, plug it in yourself, and I'm pretty confident that you're going to be really impressed. It's incredible sound out of a very lightweight and portable combo. So go check it out. God bless you

 So I walked into the classroom and kind of plugged in and fired it up, not really expecting much, and I was absolutely floored. Incredible punch and headroom and clarity and just the sound that was coming out of this little combo was just screaming. I'm not going to get too into the tech aspect of it, but suffice it to say that it's got the MB head, which it's built in obviously as a combo amp, but same power amp section as the MB500, 500 watts of power, and the NEO-212 cabinet. GK fans are going to find lots of familiar stuff in terms of the EQ

 The MB-212 combo from Galleon Kruger. Don't take my word for it. I encourage you to go to your local dealer, plug it in yourself, and I'm pretty confident that you're going to be really impressed. It's incredible sound out of a very lightweight and portable combo
