If you want to mess around with a low end multi, I'd go with something like a Zoom B3n. With regards to compression, I prefer keeping it off a multi unless it is a higher end unit, but different people have different thoughts on that.

So a lot depends on the sounds/type of music you want to play. I'd recommend by first getting a multi effects pedal. Boss and Zoom make a few - I think the Zoom B3 is a good one and it's on my pedal board (but watch out for the Zoom B3n - I thought it was very user unfriendly).
