 Super simple to say if you want to scroll through lots and lots. So in the intro you heard preset 1 which is a scooped slap bass kind of sound. I know for a fact preset 99 is how crazy this thing can get, it's called synth for active. That's definitely synth for active if you ask me

 It's laid out super simple, even I can understand it. We're running it stereo into a controversial Roland Jazz Chorus 22, but what people don't realise, these are actually flat response speakers, so it sounds amazing. The front panel here, you've got your three main buttons for you to stamp all over, the up and down for the presets, there's 99 presets in this bad boy, and a control button which you can use to turn on an individual effect within that preset, like a boost or an octaver, if you fancy. Lovely little LED screen, super easy to read, a nice expression pedal which can be used for wah, whammy and to change the rate and depth of, or well, any parameter of effect that you like

 Up here we have the three knobs that change the three main parameters of every preset, of every effect sorry, say rate, depth and level of a chorus. Up here is where it gets quite exciting, quite exciting and easy. It's easy mode, you click select and you can literally scroll through, it comes as user effects, you can scroll through 99 of the presets, every genre under the sun. With this one you can scroll through to a specific genre or type of music you enjoy like jazz or disco bass and just scroll down the presets and it will only pick the jazz or disco bass or heavy metal, whatever you want presets

That said, if the GT-1B gives a decent sound in your DAW, no reason to ditch it. The other thing to look into is if you can get a 100% dry tone (no amp sims or any processing at all) out of the GT-1B and into your DAW, since that will give you the most flexibility to affect tone after the fact.

I recently started getting into recording myself playing bass, and find it hugely motivating and rewarding having a tangible "thing" exist at the end of learning a song, etc. But I am just starting to learn the ins and outs of how to improve my recording. I currently have a Boss GT-1B, which is getting the job done. My question is:

Would recording with an analog pedal like the Fender Downtown Express be a big improvement over the GT-1B? And if so what should I use to record to the PC? Would something like the Focusrite Scarlett interface keep the best signal when recording?

Or is there another option I'm unaware of, which would be better?

Basically I have a $300 Amazon gift card coming in through my job and am wondering if there is a worthwhile way to spend it to improve my setup. If it wouldn't be a huge improvement, then I'll spend the money elsewhere.  


Edit: Also I'm using Audacity to record and OpenShot to put all the clips together. Is that a good option or should I be trying something else?

Bass pedals?

I bought this to replace my old Digitech BP200. It has loads of effects, most of them are actually usable and a few are truly unique (atmosphere). The degree to which you can customize each patch can seem overwhelming, but I'm sure I'll appreciate it as I learn how.  The cons? The LCD display is pretty small

Packed with features, though the synth effects aren't the best

 It's got expandable control ability for experienced players so you can plug in extra stuff to it. It's got a 32 second looper which we'll demonstrate in a second or two. And it can be powered by four AA batteries or a Boss PSA 9V adapter. This unit would be perfect for beginners purchasing it as their first bass multi-effect or for experienced users as a subsystem for rehearsal, easy session or on the go fly gigs

this is my initial impression and will follow up after I actually use it, but when I unpacked and inspected I found that it does not come with a power supply or a xlr output. When you spend a couple hundred on electronics it should come with a way to plug it in. That being said it did come with batteries, and does have an input for power. I will now have to buy a DI box so that I can plug into our sound system which was not an issue since the board I had been using had an XLR out built in

Missing equipment/options

 Today, where it's impossible to go through every single sound, everything will set, every single setting, we're going to go through a few things and just kind of show you an overview of the pedal and let you dive in for yourself. Today's signal chain is very simple. It's a Yamaha BB1024X into the GT-1B and coming out of that we're going into the Aguilar Tone Hammer using the DI on that into an Apogee Quartet in the Pro Tools. So the controls are very simple

 So here's some sound. Now let's say you want to add a little beef to it, let's hit the overdrive. So now we can control this within this setting, so you don't have to go to a different setting or have something different or a different preset. And now you can actually turn the overdrive on and off within that parameter

 So then the vibe section, well that's got your chorus, that's got your deep chorus and your phasers and things like this and then you have your delays in your, actually your echo is the reverb, but there is some delay on that at the very end of it. So you have delay and reverb on the end. So you can change any of your sounds really quickly and easily with these if you don't like the presets, which has 99 presets. So let's go through a couple of presets on this
