In any case, here are additional reasons why the drive may appear to go bad or actually go bad & destroy your files

 It's not uncommon for the average person to simply attempt file transfers to a new partition and or drive without first running a malware / spyware scan on their system for potential issues. This can cause abnormal behavior like failed file transfers & self-destructing files.  5. You failed to format the drive with a reliable file system like NTFS

 If you are working with files within different platforms utilizing various file systems ( FAT32, NTFS, EXT3, EXT4 ect .. ) & you attempt to backup files to a hard drive with a different file system it can cause the files to become corrupt or destroy the drives file system table responsible for maintaining a reference to all files saved to that drive.  This is something that often happens when attempting to save files extracted within a Linux EXT4 that were not meant to be housed on an NTFS formatted drive

Honest review .. Own multiple WD extrenal drives

Great storage with large capacity.

 I said no to this and asked for clear instructions so I could do this myself. Online chat support ignored my request. I treied again with a different online caht support representative. The same thing happened

Good news & bad news

 I decided to use bitlocker for encryption instead of the WD software, for ease/transparency of use with windows 10.

Quick shipping. Worked immediately after plugging in. I was concerned that I couldn't use it to backup a system image (windows 10), but discovered that this was because it wasn't formatted with NTFS. After reformatting, it worked fine

My Book 8TB (owned 3 wks)

Mostly I'm happy with this drive, certainly with WD's reputation for reliability. The 8TB for backup storage has been very useful. I've had a few problems, though, with getting it to cooperate with the many other USB devices plugged into my system. I don't know if I can blame the hard drive itself or my computer, but when I try to have it plugged in at the same time as a second external hard drive, one of them doesn't mount, or other USB devices get kicked off
