The Ugly Stik Dock Runner is a shorter 3 ft rod with a 30-size spinning reel pre-spooled with a 6 lb line. It has a cork grip and is excellent for younger fishers or tight spaces like a dock or a kayak. The Dock Runner comes ready to use with no assembly required besides stringing the line, and you can feel it is of better quality than much of the child-centric competition in our lineup. Testers liked this pole's size and think it is easy enough to use after practicing the reel type, which is a higher degree of difficulty over the push-button reel. 
Given the reel style and design, a higher level of hand/eye coordination and muscle memory is necessary to effectively cast, which could elude some younger users. The pre-spooled line is also sub-par, and we experienced a high frequency of snapping and tangled lines with this setup. It also doesn't come with any accessories. However, we can overlook this given the poor quality of accessories we experienced in this lineup. Overall, this is a great budget-friendly, short pole option for older kids who can master the finger skill required to use the reel. It feels like it will last for several seasons and multiple children, becoming a family favorite.

Reel arrived broken

  Update 7/18/20. Just went out shark and ray fishing and landed on a 35 in 8.5 lbs ray that fought for about 10 minutes. Reel was just buzzing away and didn’t burn out on me yet

 I never used the string that it came with and replaced it with 20 lb braided line from the start. I also bought the Zebco Dock Demon Deluxe and the smaller Dock Demon and I think their quality of reel pole combo is holding up better. I have so much more confidence in the Dock Demon Deluxe that I put 50lb braided line on it. Planning on catching a shark or a ray with it pretty soon

This Is A Beautiful Small Rod

The media could not be loaded. Trying to see if my daughter would like fishing as a sport and what a great way to introduce her with a small setup. Originally we went out for small blue gills but found out the line that it comes with is terrible. There's a lot line memory and wind knot when casting light weighted lures

 The rod and reel are nice. But I'll upgrade the reel to a shimano 500 seris with braided line. Great setup for the little ones that wants to fish with some that is usable and is not a toy.

Decent small rod and reel combo for a fair price.  The reel that comes with the combo is alright for the price but I replaced it with one I already had that has a better drag and anti-reverse.  The rod itself has worked out great for ice fishing especially when used in conjunction with an automatic hook setter.  The first combo that was shipped was missing the crank

 The Shakespeare reel is a bit flimsy, even for an ultralight reel, but it’s not a problem with light weight line and small fish. The ugly stik rod doesn’t feel like it’s going to snap even thought it’s very flexible. Casts decently and can get my line in spots a larger rod can’t, so it serves it’s purpose. All in all, it’s a good purchase, and I’m happy with it

I'm no pro, but I've experienced a lot of bird's nest on this using the line it came with. Not a bad deal for under $20, but it was often difficult teaching my three year old daughter the finer points of fishing. I put on better line and voila - problem solved. I also like that it small enough for her small hands
