I’m looking to upgrade my turntable to one in the price range of $1k-$2k. What are my best options and should I be getting one that requires a pre-amplifier that’s not built in? If so which one?

\- for the turntable itself you might consider a good 2nd hand one: more value for money. The mid-range direct drive turntables from Technics, Pioneer, Micro Seiki or other Japanese brands are the most reliable.

Cartridge for a Pioneer PL-530

However the AT cart sounds better on the Pioneer compared to the table it was on, a Technics SL-1900. Both of these greatly exceed your budget, but are outstanding performers that would pair well with the PL-530.

Is any old technics good?

Disadvantage of the P-mount T4P system: a lot less choice in cartridges, although there do exist some good modern ones and some excellent vintage ones. Personally, I would look for a Technics Direct Drive with the 'normal' half-inch mount. For example: SL-Q2 and SL-Q3, SL-1300/1310, SL-1700, SL-1900 etc. These can usually be found below $250.

Turntable Set-Up Recommendations?

They may be easier to find in your country. For the turntable itself, I would look for a nice used Technics direct drive such as SL-1900, SL-2000, Sl-1700, SL-1300 or SL-Q2/Q3 or SL-D2/D3. The mid-priced Thorens or Dual turntables are also nice, but less sturdy/reliable.

r/audiophile Shopping, Setup, and Technical Help Desk Thread

Doesn't really fit into the space with it's veneer, would need a new chassis. The Technics SL 1900 (213$) is a black beauty, the only problem it has is that the tone arm lift is not working and the needle is Missing. I have never repaired a record player, but I am not shy of trying new stuff.
