Upgrade from Fluance RT81 to what?

The Technics SL-100C is rolling out (finally) in the US for $1000 minus the phono stage and 2M Red that the SL-1500C has. For something that is built like a tank and plays nice with a multitude of cartridges, I can't help but recommend it.

Technics SL-1200Mk7 or SL-100C for $1,000. MUCH better than Fluance. Schiit Mani. Cartridge of your choice. I really like the Nagaoka MP-200.

Nice turntable

I haven’t had a record since I was little. This brings back some great memories. This is a great turntable with a good sounds. I have to get a few more records than I have. I love that these are making a come back.

Nice. I recently bought almost the same turntable (I got the SL-100C, the version without the preamp) and it's a joy.

The 100C only comes in black though. I wish I could have got it in silver.

I’m looking to upgrade my turntable to one in the price range of $1k-$2k. What are my best options and should I be getting one that requires a pre-amplifier that’s not built in? If so which one?

The mid-range direct drive turntables from Technics, Pioneer, Micro Seiki or other Japanese brands are the most reliable. The is also a somewhat affordable new one, the Technics SL-100c. \- budget for a good cartridge with a good styles in the $150 to $300 range: AT-VM95ML or better, like the AT-VM540ML or Ortofon 2M Blue or Bronze, Nagaoka MP-150, Goldring 1042 or better. Even if you buy a second hand turntable, usually you will have to buy at least a new stylus and you might as well choose a cartridge to your liking.
