Sony FE 50mm f/1.8

I've been doing some hiking and carried the 50mm f/1.8 and the 24mm f/2.8 STM with my T3i. I tried the 50mm for some portraits but like you found, the focal length was too narrow and it didn't catch much of the background.

Optics are sound, but its autofocus motor is sluggish.

I love the combo of the f/2.8 70-200mm, f/4 20-70mm, and the f/1.8 50mm. Great versatility and performance for the dollar.

50mm 1.8 Best bang for your buck that you can use to learn a ton about photography. After that your next purchase should be a speedlight. Mastering those two pieces of gear will get you well on your way for a small cost out of pocket

For the price the lens feels okay. Image quality is okay. If you are just starting out on the Sony e mount system this lens will do. Autofocus is okay for what it cost.

And if you already have the 35mm and don't particularly use it, well, the 50mm f/1.8 isn't going to do much for you, either. That said, I did say I own**ed** the f/1.2. It has a very boring rendering, similar to Sigma Art lenses, which is not what I buy extra-fast primes for. In this regard I actually prefer the EF f/1.2, which is *technically* worse but is more flattering right out of camera for portraiture and overall is a bit more interesting.

sharpness going down drastically while going down f4, f5.6 has the best image quality but that is too slow.

The 16-50mm kit lens is good not great, but overall really happy with the camera for $1000. I bought a Sony 50mm 1.8 that I primarily use, but have other lenses lined up that I'd like to purchase as well.
