I like the sound of the mic with an SM57, but it has some sharp highs that need to be tamed in post. To prevent those highs at the source, I would tilt it slightly off-axis. The is a must have in any mic closet!

It was valuable for me back in the 90ies when typically a 3-band eq with a single sweepable mid band was all we had on our small mixers channels. These days, with all the EQ options in digital mixers (or in our DAWs, when recording), these "voiced" mics are still useful, but their selling point has become somewhat weaker. Its similar with the Sennheiser MD421 - the speech-music switch (bass roll-off) is still a nice to have feature, but I rarely use it now that I can just adjust the low cut on my mixer to a finer degree.

Great for guitar amp recording. This is an eternal debate, but in my opinion, SM57 is still better for a fraction of the price. The MD 421 could be cheaper.

If you need a vocal mic to continue using in that room I would look at an sm7b with cloud lifter, md421, and there’s an electro-voice mic that’s good too. Those are all good dynamic vocal mics that will give you an upgrade over your 58, but don’t have the same issues a large diaphragm condenser has in an untreated room.
