Although the Mammut Nordwand Advanced is our favorite jacket for the absolute harshest conditions, the Patagonia Ascensionist is our favorite for everything else. This jacket offers an exceptionally well-balanced set of characteristics that make it ideal for an array of winter uses. It's impressively lightweight, but it doesn't compromise on features. Our testers appreciated its four accessory pockets, particularly the internal stash pocket for storing a pair of gloves or a hat. They were also pleased with the extra venting ability supplied by the underarm zippers. Finally, a low hemline and long arm sleeves achieved excellent mobility and ensured precip couldn't sneak inside.
We believe the Ascensionist is the best all-around hardshell, but there are better choices for some specific situations. Its Gore-Tex Active fabric proved to be somewhat prone to wetting out during heavy rain so you may want to opt for a Gore-Tex Pro model if you're regularly out in downpours. Even though this jacket is svelte, there are lighter choices for ultralight applications. We also don't consider this hardshell nearly as excellent as one past top scorer: the Arc'teryx Alpha FL. However, until that jacket is back in stock, the Ascensionist deserves significant praise and a top spot in this product category.

 I'm going to do a video that just kind of covers all three of them. Steve House did some great video product guides for them over at how to going his website and he did them individually. The 25 liter, 35 litre, and 45 litre packs are all here. The 25 liter is you know, more different than the 35 and 45 litre packs are I'll talk about those differences later on in this video, but for right now I'm going to concentrate more on what's going on with the 35 and the 45 litre packs

 you know there's no Cuban fiber and this or anything with kevlar or carbon fiber frames or anything and I think it did that because these fabrics work and they keep the price low. You're looking at a 400 junior fabric in the high wear area and a 210 denier fabric in the less high wear areas. Some of the things I like about this pack: I'll demo it on this pack this top lid. It's very easy to open and it's kind of an asymmetrical top lid here

 oh gosh. I remember being at the tradeshow when they introduced them but they were just selling. you know, the kind of daily commuter messenger style packs and they had some duffel style bags so this is pretty exciting for me. I'll say right off the bat that I really like what Patagonia has done with these essentials packs

 just a well-thought-out very clean, minimalist pack. Probably got a lot of input from their climbing ambassadors because the things they did really seem to be very functional, not adding a lot of weight. These are coming in at a very attractive price point and be on average two to three ounces lighter than other packs in this category, so a very good effort from Patagonia. We really like them and customers that have seen them in the store are very impressed

 This is a size large reference: I'm 6 foot 112-540 5 inch S 33 inch waist 36 37 on the arms Arms were great, torso legs is great, a little tight in the upper back but again I got kind of a big upper back, big lats some that probably isn't very common. What this check is great for is climbing backcountry use like we're doing right now. Split boarding friends up there right now and chasing these loud dogs. so again, its features

 so we're gonna try and see if we can get some cold rock climbing in and if not, we're gonna go for a hike on Mount Moosilauke in the White Mountains So I think we found maybe one rock climb that we could do over there somewhere. Yeah and we're gonna try to get up it and just see what happens. but it's really beautiful a day out here in Romney it's 42 degrees which is crazy during this time of year. it's really snowy as you can see lots of ice

 so on the top here I have all my stuff for winter hiking. so I have a buff I have ten warmers and a foil blanket on the top pocket. this is pretty big in there and then in the middle of the back an enormous puffy jacket to keep warm at the crag. or if you get stuck in a hard place water with me I don't think I'll be needing I had all of my GoPro stuff I have some extra pants, bag, furnace, ton of stuff

 so I have a ton of stuff in the essentialness from Patagonia it's a great pack for going to the crag, going to do a day hike or even an overnight. Obviously it has loops for ice axes and trekking poles there and so I wanted to show you how much stuff I truly have in this bag. so on the top here I have all my stuff for winter hiking. so I have a buff I have ten warmers and a foil blanket on the top pocket

 It's also got the adjustable chest strap on there again with the aluminium fittings and it allows you to move up on the daisy chain to suit your comfort and also at the bottom of traditional waist strap as well at the back. Also, we've got an extended large hoop this accommodates you being able to grasp it when you've got gloves on it. Also at the top it comes with additional pocket which is for easy access small items so you can get in there atop of your pack without having to open up the main pack. so that's really quite handy

 It's very streamlined. You've got a very thin harness, but comfortable. It's reasonably rigid. It's got a little bit of cushioning on there

We're looking at the essentialness 25 liter backpack from Patagonia I Was looking for a backpack that I could carry a lot of my filming equipment with while I was on the trail and looking at the Patagonia one. and it's durable, lightweight, and has good capacity. So I was hoping that this would be a good fit for us so it's just have a quick look at it here. The backpacks made from Rips nylon which makes it super strong

Multi purpose hiking climbing back pack - PATAGONIA ASCENSIONIST PACK Review

 We can use the buckles down at the bottom that we used for the ice ax tools that clip in and secure the bottom of the sea like so and then we can use daisy chains up here with the addition of the ski strap to secure them in place. We can place the skis on to the rucksack and do the buckle up, fighting it up to secure them into place down here. and then we can add our ski strap into the daisy chains which were on both sides of the rucksack in front and wrap that across to secure the skis in place. Gives a nice solid attachment for walking in for a Lakes mixed skin

 We have on the side compression strap equipped to undo it and it clip down here. The shaft of the ice tool can go through this loop just here and then the pic of the ice tool just goes through this sleeve and clips to secure the head of the ice tool like so. then we can tighten up the side compression strap and keep everything fixed in place. We can also tap skis easily to the brook sack

 The pack climbs really well, so up on Rainier I Was able to carry full kit for up to three days and then once we had our high camp established, we were able to push to the summit and I was able to use the same pack I stripped everything off of it, got it nice and small and it climbed really well. I Highly recommend this, so check it out!

 It's got really nice updated tool carry for this year. Nuts, snaps. ooh there it's got a rope carry strap which is really nice. I'll show that real quick

 I've been wanting Patagonia to make a 55 liter version of the essentialness and they have it now. Even the hip belts removable the back panel is removable. Patagonia Ascensionist 55L Review

Patagonia say: “Ideal as a leader pack on done-in-a-day alpine routes, the streamlined Ascensionist 25L is perfect for everything from long, granite ascents in the Bugaboos to a day-push on El Capitan.”

 Whether that be a chalk bag, harness, shoes and a bunch of quickdraws for a day sport climbing or shovel, probe, rope and rescue gear for a day of ski touring, I want it all to fit in the pack with minimum fuss, effort and bulk. I have used the Ascensionist 25 Pack for both cragging and ski touring as well as alpine day routes and it really is easy to pack. I find a lot of other packs, with all the different organisational compartments can actually be more difficult to use as you just end up with lots of dead space in the pack and extra weight from all the extra material needed to make it. Not so with this one

 I then wanted something that was simple, comfortable and streamlined for when I was actually climbing. The Ascenionist 25 Pack seemed like the obvious choice and performed brilliantly on this route. It never felt like I needed to take it off or that it got in the way, even on the crux pitches.

 Still, while I wish they were a bit longer, I realize that Patagonia’s designers made a compromise here for weight. And I’d rather have shorter pit zips than none at all.

A svelte profile belies comfort and convenience features that put the Patagonia Ascensionist ahead of lighter-weight shells.

 For a touring-oriented ski shell, I think the fit of the Ascensionist is pretty ideal — slim enough to not feel necessarily bulky, roomy enough to fit multiple layers underneath, and trim enough to fit under bigger belay jackets.I do want to stress that the Ascensionist is slim for a skiing-oriented shell, but I think it’s a bit roomier than most climbing-oriented shells and your run-of-the-mill rain jackets (e.g., Patagonia Torrentshell)

If I wanted a shell that would stay on for the up and down, I’d like something a bit slimmer (like the old Patagonia Knifeblade). But a hard shell like the Ascensionist just can’t breathe well enough to keep on throughout the entirety of high-output days in the mountains, so I end up leaving it in the pack on the way up unless it gets windy or starts to precipitate
