It’s only for stabilisation because the straps are so thin. But they cut into you because of this. Just not a helpful addition to the pack.

Don't do rack/panniers: on the back there's a child seat, on my back there's an Osprey Syncro 20. Total weight of the bike (size 60, including heavy touring pedals, bike lock but \_excluding\_ child seat) is about 12-13 kg, but as it is a very nimble & stiff bike you don't feel the weight too much even when climbing (although not alpine climbs :) ). I didn't want to go electric for cost & because I enjoy the workout. In addition, electric bikes here in Belgium (except for the very expensive 'speed pedelecs', which go 45 km/h) are limited to 25 km/h assistance and way heavier than my bike.
