Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic

I've got a set of Ortlieb front rollers and a set of Ortlieb back roller classics that I've had for several years now. I find both sizes useful, but I use the back rollers most often when commuting. The extra space makes it easier to fit my lunch, laptop and work clothes without things being too tight or too squashed. Unless space is at a premium at your destination, don't be too tempted to go with the smallest bag possible.

If you're travelling somewhere that won't have the standard touring gear, start with the ortlieb. If you're travelling densely-populated, WEIRD countries, try anything you want and replace it if it fails.

Another vote for Ortlieb Backroller Classics. They work, are waterproof, patchable, and more. And they now make ginormous rear panniers if your schlepping needs have increased.

Several people referred to these bags as the "gold standard" for panniers. While I like the bags, I've had a few problems after several months, including having the sizing inserts fall out or crack in the middle of rides, leaving the bag to slide around.
