NVIDIA is tricky! RTX 4090 Review & Benchmarks

 Nvidia's new RTX 40 series GPUs launch tomorrow, but we get a one-day head start to share performance

 reviews with you guys on the flagship founders edition RTX 4090 that costs $1,600, which to be

 fair is only a modest $100 increase over its predecessor, the RTX 3090, which launched two

 years ago in 2020, if you accept that card's halo pricing as reasonable, of course. But things have

 changed a lot in the past two years, so pricing aside, the question I'll be answering today is

 how far Nvidia has come in those two years in terms of gaming performance. Spoiler, they've

 actually come quite far, quite far indeed. Welcome to my launch review of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090

 founders edition graphics card. Excellent! Thermaltake has done it. They've created a case

 fan with swappable fan blades and it's called the Swafan. Available in 12 and 14 centimeter sizes,

 these high static pressure fans are ideal for useless radiators or dust filters, and they come

 with an extra set of reversed fan blades. Easy to replace and reverse your airflow, so now you can

 show off your fan's good side no matter where it's installed in your case. They use hydraulic

 bearings, feature three addressable LED rings, 2000 RPM max speed, and are of course very easy

 So my review would be separated into three parts, so I will explain, but there are timestamps too,

 3.0, which provides more performance and higher frame rates with some degree of loss in visual

 fidelity. And that third category is compelling given that the RTX 4090 features fourth-gen tensor

 cores for DLSS and third-gen RT cores for ray tracing, but to be completely honest with you

 guys, the past few weeks have left me completely exhausted as benchmarking is incredibly time

 consuming, and given that this launch is sandwiched between major CPU and GPU launches from Intel and

 for providing this GPU for my testing on pretty short notice. And lastly, the RX 6900 XT in AMD

 reference design trim. Oh, and I tested all of these cards freshly on the brand new AM5 platform,

 just like I did with my ARK review with a 7950X CPU to give the GPUs as much headroom as possible.

 If you would like to shamelessly ogle the RTX 4090 Founders Edition card itself, I recommend my

 equally shameless unboxing video from last week. Here it is plugged in though, and yes, it does

 require an 850 watt power supply at minimum, as well as four 8-pin PCI Express graphics power

 connectors to feed the 12VH power dongle that's included in the box. There's one HDMI 2.1 and

 three DisplayPort 1.4A connectors for video outs. And yes, it is absolutely massive, requiring three

 slots in your case at minimum, and it's 304 millimeters, or pretty much 12 inches long.

 Giggity. The GPU itself is the AIDA Lovelace AD102-300-A1 chip, built on TSMC's 4N lithography,

 and sporting 16,384 CUDA cores, a 2,520 MHz boost clock, and a 24GB GDDR6X memory configuration.

 Relevant stats for all the cards tested today are here if you want to pause to compare them,

 and do note that I'm showing current pricing based on the average of the cheapest 3-4 models

 available on PC part picker. And those prices have come down significantly in recent months,

 even for some of the Nvidia GPUs. Moving on to my test setup. All tests were run on this test bed

 with an ASUS ROG X670E crosshair hero motherboard and a Ryzen 9 7950X 16 core CPU, cooled by a

 Corsair 360mm AIO. Memory is a 32GB G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo DDR5 6000 CL30 kit, the same one from my

 recent Ryzen 7000 CPU reviews, and for power we have a Corsair AX1600i 1600W ATX power supply,

 which usually feels like overkill, but should get us by today. Tests were run on Windows 11,

 version 21H2, and here are stats for the rest of the system if you want to take a closer look.
