If youre looking at spending that kind of cash id recommend norco torrent S1 or a commencal meta AM HT. way more bang for your buck imo

Edit: also if you can wait the 2022 Merida big trail 700 is speccy for the price too!

* Norco Torrent S1 (29"- would likely mullet. May consider mulletting the Siskiu as well). All approximately the same price, Torrent being slightly cheaper as it is a hardtail. I am interested in a mullet bike- would definitely consider doing either of the 29ers.

I'm in NZ so availability will be a little different but I just settled on a Norco Torrent S2. Other aggressive hardtails I was looking at were nuke proof scout, Commencal Meta HT, rocky mountain growler and Marin el Roy.

I live in the Denver area and I'm not sure what kind of riding I'll be into - I like the idea of fast XC type rides but also gnarly steep and technical sounds good too. Due to the shortage, I'm looking at used bikes. I found a good deal on a modified '21 Norco Torrent HT A2 in my size. It has been upgraded with a Cane Creek Helm fork which reduces the travel to 130mm and steepens the HTA to 65 and the STA to 77.

Yeah dude you can rip on an aggressive hardtail. I've had a norco torrent for a couple months now and I came from an older full sus. I love the bike, can handle steep and technical terrain very well, it's heavy but still great in drops and jumps.

So I think you will find yourself taking advantage of it's potential sooner than you may think. Plus having higher quality components on the better bike just makes maintenance easier, less likely for things to break, nicer experience overall. On the other hand a hardcore hardtail like a Norco Torrent is a very capable bike, but probably too much for a beginner to take advantage of.

I'd chuck something like a norco torrent, nuke proof scout and kona honzo esd on your list if you're looking at a hardtail. The aggressive hardtails are super capable, if you go for a steel frame (norco and kona both offer) they feel pretty plush for a hardtail. You can definitely do advanced and technical stuff on these bikes. You get better value for money and it will honestly make you a better rider long term.
