 My LG V30+ can get to full volume with no distortion or clipping, but it’s not quite the volume level I prefer. Sticking my Little Bear B4 amp in between my phone and tha Monoprice amp got me those last few decibels and gave me a knob for volume control.

Seven Nation Army: Bass sounds correct, like the opposite of Dalla Dalla. Still no thump, but it feels appropriate. I remember the guitars being more forward than what I hear with these.

At $249.99 with free shipping, I thought the “Monolith by Monoprice Electrostatic Headphone with Amplifier” was a reasonably affordable way to sample electrostatic technology. I have Shuoer Singer IEMs that purport to use electrostatic (electret?) tech, and I enjoy those just fine, so I was definitely curious to hear how “real” electrostatic headphones would sound.

 Adequate clamp, sufficient headband padding, and real leather pads, albeit with non-memory foam. No obvious way to change the pads.

The Monoprice Monolith M650 faces stiff competition from the Audio Technica ATH M50x, but even so I kept returning to the M650. Then again, I'm a sucker for sweet sounding headphones, even ones that miss the last degree of clarity. Also, it's really easy to wear for extended listening sessions, and that counts for a lot.

 The M650 isn't as lively as the SR80e, but I prefer the M650's more refined and natural sounding tonal balance with acoustic music of all kinds. The M650's more potent (but not overdone) bass clinched the deal.

Aphex Twin's latest EP, Collapse, with its churning bass beats and hard hitting electronic blasts were given their full due over the M650. Switching over to a set of slightly less-expensive Grado SR80e open-back headphones, the bass and midrange thinned out. The M650 isn't as lively as the SR80e, but I prefer the M650's more refined and natural sounding tonal balance with acoustic music of all kinds. The M650's more potent (but not overdone) bass clinched the deal

Still, when I returned to the M650 its added warmth was quite pleasant. Both headphones are recommendable, and since the M50x is a closed-back design it hushes external noise to some degree, it might be a better choice if you like to listen music loud in quiet public places. That said, the M650 presents a somewhat bigger, more spacious soundstage than the M50x.

   Finally caved and bought these under-the-radar closed planars. I'm impressed! Can be found for around $200. Good isolation, perfect for in my office cube. They blow away my other closed cans (ATH-M50X, Senn Momentum)

 The earholes are small - - think first gen Momentum over-ears. Fit me fine (big head, little ears), but ymmv. The headband hits right at the top of my head, which I don't like, but at least it's softer than the padded-on-wrong-side ATH-M50X. The pleather earpads get hot, but they are replaceable with that short velcro/command strip type stuff holding them on

 The overall fit and finish is very nice with nice looking wood and a strong metal frame. The cable is soft cloth, which I prefer to the hard plastic HE-400i cable. Zero microphonics. Each cup has a tight jack, no problem there and easy to go balanced if needed

 Better subbass, maybe less delicate and airy than the HE-400i, but very good overall. Solidly built. The earholes are small - - think first gen Momentum over-ears. Fit me fine (big head, little ears), but ymmv

Monolith M565C Closed Back Planar Headphones

Try the monolith 1060c. They sound pretty good, I prefer the 1070 but you're looking for closed back, I don't think there's anything better than the 1060c. They need eq but extends well. Seen then for 300€ in sales

Dear humans, I'm looking for owning my first planar headphones and would love your input.

The current focus is good soundstage and good bass. I pretty much want an upgraded experience over my Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 ohm Closed (which I love). My main source is my DAP Sony NW-A55, mainly listen to alt electronic music.

I want a closed-back because my apartment is near a busy avenue, the passive noise canceling from the DT 770 handles it okay, but I think anything less isolated than that could be bad.

I read about the ÆON RT, but was not able to find it to buy in Europe (I'm in Portugal).

Nevertheless thank you, I've been a reader here for 2y+ and learned a lot from y'all.

Poor build quality

My humble set up. Don’t mind the, not so audiophile, pro media sub.

Build quality: I find the build quality of these to be very good. The cable connections seem to me to be really, really solid - it is actually hard to get the pins inserted, or to pull them out. There is no looseness - wiggling the cable connection just wiggles the whole headphones, no other movement. Comfort: The comfort is decent, but not ideal for me

 They could have allowed room for even taller heads - I have them maxed out, and it presses a little hard on the top of my head, not to the point of any discomfort, but it makes me aware they are there. I had to replace the earpads because the supplied ones are too small for me. I replaced them with the same Brainwavz Hybrid pads I use with my M50x headphones. Bow these use velcro to attach the pads, instead of the groove method of other headphones, but with a little ingenuity you can modify the brainwavzs to work with these (either cut off the retention cuff and add some velcro to the pads, or just cut slits in the cuffs so that they extend around the headphone cups, and then bind those tabs in place with a little decorative duct tape or electricians tape

 speaker Aeons (made me want to take the M50xs off my head and stomp on them after listening to the Aeons.) What surprised me is that these produce a lot more more volume than the M50x - I would have thought that these would require more to drive them, and I would have lost a little volume.  Overall I'm pleased with this purchase.

Very nice set of headphones for the price.

Just want to share that I love my Monoprice Monolith (5 x 200). I usually use it to power center and surround speakers, and an Anthem STR Power amp for front L&R, but I currently have the Monolith connected to the front speakers and it still sounds absolutely amazing.

I also just tested LS50 Metas for a month, but only had them connected to the Anthem Amp. I disagree with the other response saying they aren't for HT, if I kept them it probably wouldve only been for HT and used something else for music. They have insane clarity, but separation of sounds left me wanting (especially as a metalhead).

Ok - so I am finally coming to a position where I am going to have some significant disposable income and I want someone to gut check me on my thinking. 

So I have a dedicated space that I use for HT and 2.1 pretty much 50/50. So that means I want great performance in both. 

I do have the ability to set up a second dedicated 2.1 area within that space, but it would require some new furniture and reconfiguring, and I also think that whatever speakers I purchase should be capable of both. 

So here is the issue. I currently have LS50’s all around and they are amazing speakers. I do find that they have some flaws, but I am unsure if that is because I haven’t addressed all the obvious issues and if moving to new speakers will just reveal all the same issues, and I will have paid a lot of money to figure that out.  

My original plan was to buy a very good (in my opinion) set of bookshelves ($2700-$3700). Obviously that is not the top of the line, but it’s significant for me. 

But - would I be better off spending that money on fixing everything else in my space to make sure that the issue is not my space and my equipment.  

So here is what I was thinking of doing. 

* 1. Grabbing a Monoprice Monolith amp. It will give me 200 WPC with balanced outputs and will give me more than enough power to ensure that my LS50’s are getting what they need. 

* 2. Add a second sub to my HT to even out any nulls and make the bass as even as possible. That’s more for HT than music - but it will def help those little LS50’s sound as complete as possible. 


* 3. Add a quality DAC / music streamer to my systems to make sure that I am getting the absolute best quality from Tidal and my other sources 

* 4. Invest in REW and make sure that I am doing everything that I can do to address the issues in my room. 

What do you all think?
