The best lightweight mouse for travel we've tested is the Microsoft Arc Mouse. At 82g, it's slightly heavier than some other mice on this list, but it's still light. It has a unique, collapsible design, so you snap the mouse into an arced position to turn it on and flatten it to turn it off. While flattened, it's extremely thin, making it easy to slip into a laptop bag while on the go.

It connects wirelessly with a Bluetooth connection, so you don't have to worry about carrying around a USB receiver. It also uses two AAA batteries for power, so a charging cable isn't necessary. Using Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center, you can swap the L/R clicks, which is great, especially if you're a left-handed user. You can also program a three-finger click gesture command. Though there's no physical scroll wheel, you can scroll vertically and horizontally by swiping your finger up and down or side to side on the button area.

Unfortunately, the three-button click doesn't work by default on macOS, and there's no compatible software for you to reprogram it. With that said, it's a good choice if you're looking for a lightweight mouse to bring with you on the go.

The Microsoft Arc Mouse is a more ergonomic take on the Microsoft Modern Mobile Mouse that nonetheless loses some functionality in the pursuit of greater comfort. It feels great in the hands, so much so that it actually convinced me to abandon my usual claw grip for a palm grip instead, but its hair trigger button that doesn&rsquo;t physically distinguish between left and right click zones and its lack of a scroll wheel means that it&rsquo;s not for everyone.

Let&rsquo;s start with the positives. The Microsoft Arc Mouse feels like it&rsquo;s built for my hands, rather than forcing my hands to contort to it. At $80, it&rsquo;s more than three times the cost of the Modern Mobile Mouse, but is still affordable compared to other ergonomic mice on this list. It also carries over some of the benefits of the Modern Mobile Mouse, including its uncomplicated and lightweight body, stylish look, many color options and easy portability (it can bend flat to fit into bags with no issue).
At the same time, it&rsquo;s got the same weaknesses as the Modern Mobile Mouse, and then some. Most noticeable and egregious among these is the lack of a scroll wheel or separated left and right click buttons. Taking the Modern Mobile Mouse&rsquo;s lack of buttons a little further, the Arc Mouse opts to have one clickable touchpad for its input. Clicking the left side works as a left click and clicking the right side works like a right click (although you can swap these), while an optional three-finger-click option can serve as either a middle click or a keyboard combination of your choice. This can take some getting used to at first, as you find where the boundaries between the different options are, but it generally works. However, I did occasionally find myself pushing the button in when I didn&rsquo;t want to, simply because the mouse is designed so that the weight of your fingers rests on it, and the button itself doesn&rsquo;t offer much resistance. I can see avoiding this becoming easier with time, but what&rsquo;s worse is that, instead of a scroll wheel, this mouse wants you to flick your finger to scroll.
This results in stilted scrolling that requires a lot of extraneous flicks, even on the highest sensitivity setting. Not only do you lose precision with this, but you also lose comfort, which goes against the point of the mouse. I did find myself getting better at scrolling with this mouse over time, but it never felt easy, natural or comfortable.
Also a little disappointing is that bending the mouse flat also turns it off, so you can&rsquo;t use it in this shape if you prefer. Further, the mouse is not built for fingertip or claw grippers, although its elevated backside saw me adopting a palm grip style even though I naturally use a claw grip one.
Because of its comfort, style and easy portability, I can see some people loving this mouse, either as their main pointer or as a backup when travelling. It is a niche pick, but so are most ergonomic mice.

Unlike the Magic Mouse, the Arc Touch Mouse still uses two physical buttons for the primary left-and-right click functions. The Microsoft design also has no support for gesture recognition. The only real similarity between the Arc Touch Mouse and the Magic Mouse is that both have touch-based scrolling, and in that regard we find Microsoft's design innovative and more satisfying to use. 

Despite the Arc Touch Mouse's distinct benefit for travelers, the paired -down design has a certain flimsy feel to it. Your reviewer has only modest-size hands, but the mouse still felt like it was too dainty, and I never felt the same surety of cursor control that comes with the heft of a traditional desktop-size mouse. That's a subjective judgment, of course, and perhaps my opinion would change after using the mouse for an extended period of time. For now, I still prefer the Logitech MX family of mice, of which the MX 1100 is closest in price to the Arc Touch Mouse

Microsoft has come up with a unique new product in the Arc Touch Mouse, thanks to its clever, convertible design and its touch-sensitive scroll wheel. Like the original Arc Mouse, and the Philippe Starck-designed mice before it, the Arc Touch Mouse is mostly a fashion statement wrapped in a few interesting features. We would still opt for a more traditional mouse for day-to-day productivity, or even for travel, but the Arc Touch Mouse will appeal to people with an eye for design or technical novelty.

 It offers the same design, functionality, and connectivity as the recently announced Arc Touch Bluetooth Mouse, which will come in slate gray and is marketed as a general-purpose Bluetooth device. Choosing between the two may come down simply to aesthetics, with the Surface Edition matching the Microsoft Surface tablet's color scheme, and the Microsoft Arc Touch Bluetooth a better match for gray or silver laptops. 

 This creates a comfortable curve around which to cradle your palm and fingers. To power the mouse off, you just fold it flat again.

 And for whatever it's worth, I eventually resorted to a traditional mouse -- the Sculpt Mobile -- and while its design might be traditional/boring, it's one of the best mouses I've used in terms of functionality.

I'm a writer, so I'm using a mouse almost constantly, switching between the keyboard and the mouse quickly and frequently. Well-designed products are important to me.  I was TRYING to like the Apple Magic Mouse; its simple elegant design and click/swipe capability made it, "on paper," the perfect mouse. But every time I reached to use it, I would inadvertently touch/tap the surface and the screen would "jump" (up/down/left/right)

 I like the shape and found myself naturally curling my fingers under the mouse. Very ergonomic. Very comfortable.  I liked that you can fold it flat to turn it off, which also makes it great for travel

 Lastly, partly because of the less than stellar response of the scroll wheel, the Arc often registers a double tap on the scroll surface which puts the mouse into a "scroll mode" so you can use the mouse to scroll just by moving the pointer around on the screen. You double tap it to then turn it off. I never use this feature, and it's annoying as all get up when it activates.  I would avoid another purchase of the Arc mouse but I haven't seen any alternatives

The design of the mouse from the curved profile and bend to activate is great. Very sleek so it fits well into the case in which I carry my Surface Pro 3. The left and right mouse buttons are easy to use, and they have a nice sharp, crisp "click" sound when depressed that I really like. I opted for the radio USB version as I didn't want to keep my Bluetooth receiver on constantly

Swing and a miss...

 Battery life is great - I've changed the battery once in about 4 months, with fairly heavy use.

Great mouse, but has some significant issues and could use more robust build quality to stand up to travel.

Good design but missed the mark on comfort IMO. However, it depends what your purpose is. For me, I bought it to use about an hour everyday at work and was not my go to mouse, just an alternative to the track pad

Could've done better Microsoft

It's a Microsoft! Kind of reminds me of it's software, especially of it's operating systems. I only had it for 5 days, but still! I originally bought it for the design, that it goes flat when off, making it only .6" high, which would make it great for transport in my laptop case. Yes, as other reviews said, it takes a bit getting used to
