I've been using my parent's old tools for the past 5 years since I was given their old house after they passed. All his drill bits are disorganized and rusting and the drill is corded, I'm wondering what brand to get for a cordless set.

Also do I need an impact driver and a drill? Or should I get both?

I recently got married back in June and the house needs a lot of improvement so it's mainly being used for that at the moment and will use it for maintenance and random projects in the future.

I guess I'm mainly wondering what brand is good for this.

Looking for advice on a good and affordable cordless power drill/impact driver for basic home use and occasional projects

I swear I have google the hell out of this. I have most of my basic tools corded, and of course I have a cordless drill (it's an ancient Craftsman that has served well, but it's very bulky). I recently used my friend's cordless Dewalt, and I was shocked how light and compact it was. Since I just got some unexpected bonus money, I've decided I need to upgrade my drill / get some cordless things for when I want ease of use over power. 

I walked around the big hardware store and handled various brands, though unfortunately there's no way to actually use them. I liked the feel of Makita and Dewalt. I understand they're both solid brands, so my primary worry is the battery system.

Anybody able to compare Makita and Dewalt's battery life / durability? I was surprised I can't find an objective test on this. Non-battery comments are also appreciated, I just figure I need to commit to one battery system.

<p>Edit: Assuming someone will ask, I definitely want a drill and an impact driver. That&#39;s probably where I&#39;ll start, but I anticipate adding an oscillating tool and a jigsaw. I&#39;m not sure I trust a cordless circular saw, but it would be cool if it lasts and is powerful enough for basic stuff. I probably won&#39;t need outdoor tools, but always good to have that option.</p>

Upgrading Cordless Tools - Battery Systems

 This product met that requirement fantastically well.  What I love: Size - It's just right for me. It's smaller than every other similar tool I've owned and not very heavy. With that said it doesn't feel cheap, just not excessively heavy

Is milwaukee the best way to go if I am looking for a single system that has both power tools and outdoor tools ? (hedge trimmer, weed whacker, blower)

You'll be fine with Makita so long as you are careful to select the brushless LXT tools. One thing to understand about battery tools in general is that dull or worn cutting blades/bits reduce battery life tremendously.

I’ve recently purchased an urban house and suddenly need a bunch of yard tools (mower, edger, etc). For a bunch of reasons, I’m looking for electric, battery powered. 

I’m pretty invested already in Makita (for tools) so I ideally I would just use their stuff, but from reviews Makita yard tools seem pretty eh. If I do buy into another battery system, I’m okay with that, but I would like to do one at most.

My yard is *tiny* (about 1,000 SF) with a good amount of hedge and the rest being landscaped flower bed or lawn. I expect I end up needing the standard tools (mower, hedge trimmer, blower, string tool, etc) but it’s obviously a limited area I’m working with. 

Any recommendations? Is this a small enough space that the Makita tools are going to be acceptable, or does it make more financial/performance sense to switch to another platform for yard?
