Generally speaking, laptops are a series of trade-offs. Some folks might be willing to compromise on battery life to get more outright performance, or would be happy to tether a traditional laptop to their phone as an internet hotspot. For those folks, there are other options. However, for those who value incredible battery life and 5G connectivity without the need for a hotspot or tethering above all other considerations, there's a shortlist of devices out there that can deliver and it starts with the Lenovo Flex 5G. It's for this demographic and in that situation that we're proclaiming this system HotHardware Approved. The Lenovo Flex 5G is an excellent example of what Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8cx always-connected PC platform has to offer.

 I never hit gigabit speeds like my colleague Chris Welch did in a previous Verizon 5G test using phones, but the performance was far better than I’ve ever experienced on LTE. In an area where I was getting 335Mbps download and 61Mbps upload, it took the laptop about 15 seconds to download a 355MB video from Google Drive and about one minute to upload it. 

First, let’s start with 5G. This is technically the world’s best 5G-ready laptop — only because there are currently no alternatives. As you’d expect and hope for given its $1,399 price, its support for Verizon’s ultra-wideband (UWB) mmWave 5G network means that under ideal conditions, downloads and uploads absolutely fly. But it’s only as good as Verizon’s network currently allows, and given that its low-band sub-6GHz spectrum (which this laptop also supports) won’t come until later in 2020, it takes some serious effort to find a fast connection

        The Flex 5G charges with its included 45W USB-C power brick. It charges quickly, though you won’t have to charge it often thanks to its great battery life.

Using this machine in range of Verizon’s 5G nodes in Brooklyn, at best, serves up connection speeds that are about twice as fast as what I get on my PC plugged in via Ethernet at home. On average, I got around 500Mbps download speeds and 50Mbps upload (note: Verizon still pushes uploads through its LTE network). Lenovo’s Flex 5G proves it’s too early to buy a 5G laptop

I’m lucky to have several nearby locations in my area where Verizon has UWB nodes because this isn’t representative of every city in the US. Though, since mmWave has such a short, delicate range, I wouldn’t call the process of finding a 5G hotspot even in a well-served area convenient at all — especially during a pandemic. Lenovo claims 24 hours of battery life with the Snapdragon 8cx with 5G, though you’ll experience less when you’re tethered to 5G service. To give an idea of its longevity, I brought the Flex 5G around to connect to various 5G spots in my neighborhood, where I uploaded and downloaded a 350MB video several times

 Compared to what the first round of 5G-enabled phones looked like, there’s not much about the design that sets it apart from other laptops.  It doesn’t allow you to toggle between 5G and LTE.The Flex 5G comes in an iron grey color, and the chassis is covered in a grippy coating.Hitting those fast speeds was great, but finding the sweet spot was like finding an invisible needle in a broadly defined haystack, thanks to Verizon’s unclear 5G coverage map. I traveled to five different spots said to have 5G, and I found that having 5G signal and losing it can come down to walking 20 feet or turning a street corner

For a pricey laptop like this, it all comes down to 5G performance. But there's a lot more that affects that than just the hardware. Despite all the big talk, 5G service is still very limited. Verizon's maps are here, and you can deep dive into a granular look at coverage

 But most of the initial wave of 5G computers will be Arm-based, which is a natural fit for 5G right now. We're still benchmarking the Flex 5G, but even in my anecdotal use over a day, I felt the telltale pokiness of not having a mainstream Intel or AMD chip.

Fortunately, I happened to find myself working outside in one of these active areas. First sitting outside a coffee shop, then walking up and down a few blocks with the Flex 5G in tablet mode running speed tests, I found a few sweet spots and a few dead spots, but nothing close to 5G's near-gigabit promises. That said, when the stars aligned, it was still faster than my home broadband connection and much, much faster than my 4G phone.

We will continue to test 5G speeds on the Flex 5G, as well as run performance benchmarks and battery tests, which will be included in our full review.

I am looking for a Chromebook that I can buy and use for a few months to see if it will suit my needs. I was pretty much set on a Acer Chromebook 314 but it doesn't have a backlit keyboard which is a deal breaker. I want to spend as little as possible but I am not necessarily looking for the very cheapest device. I am reluctant to spend too much as I will basically be buying it to see whether it works for my usage.

I ideally want a decent screen, backlit keyboard and long battery life (all day ideally). I am aware that the performance is not going to be spectacular but I don't want anything that is going to be annoyingly slow. 

My usage is going to be Google docs, Netflix, email, general browsing.

I see a very large number of threads/comments on Reddit as well as Lenovo forums about how people hate the numpad and how it is unergonomic, etc. 

Are there people who actually use/need it? I just want to understand why Lenovo almost always includes it on 15 inch models.
