TLDR: needed new vacuum, went to local vacuum shop and tried out the premium recs, was definitely wowed but after spending more time on this subreddit, pulled the trigger on used Kirby Avaler 2. Its relatively heavy (25-30lbs) and is very loud but cleans well. Has a ton of quirks especially with all of the attachments but if you have the time to deal with and accept those quirks, its a pretty good vacuum. On hard floors with the floor attachment, it literally sucks the floor nozzle to the floor so id say suction is adequate.

Kirby Vacuums get better and better all the time!

Kirby is by far the most superior vacuum cleaner on the market. I have owned only 4 of them in my 51 years of life (my parents and both sets of grandparents also had Kirby's). Just a little curious

The design, though it is a bit archaic nowadays with only little changes being made since 1989-1990, is still fantastic. It is one of the most reliable direct-air vacuum cleaners that was ever made. Despite the design being good, the units are heavy and inconvenient for most consumers in this day and age. Back when the Avalir 2 designed was initially released as the G3, it was right at the beginning of the 1990s and the market was totally different.

it's a Kirby need I say more?

Simply got tired of replacing my vacuum every 3 to 5 years. With a cheap plastic box store brand vacuum. my mother had a Kurby vacuum from the early 60's. it was passed down to my sister. Now I have one, an Avalir 2. it will outlast me. Then to my daughter. What more can you say about a product? USA...

Are upright self propelled vacuums made any more? Looking for one that’s not a fortune.

It was a 1990s design that they produced for many years. That leaves just a Kirby Avalir 2, which is a great unit, but expensive and not right for your situation. If you do buy one of those models, she will need a little canister for cleaning furniture or anything along those lines.

do self propelled vacuum still exist?

The only new self-propelled upright on the market right now is the Kirby Avalir 2, which is a very expensive unit and I definitely do not suggest buying one new. You could look on the used market to see if there are any good deals on one. If you have a vacuum cleaner shop local to you, they may have one.

Help choosing between options

The Kirby G4, as with all the G-Series Kirby models including the current version (the Avalir 2), are great machines. On the other hand, they really shine at cleaning carpet. Since you have mostly hard floors, you may not like it. If you had mostly carpet, I would say that the Kirby would be excellent, but it is probably not your best bet for 75% hard floors.

Should I replace my Kirby vacuum?

They lack some modern features such as a lifetime belt and on-board attachments, but are some of the toughest vacuum cleaners on the planet and they clean well. I just got and sold an Avalir 2 and I thought it was wonderful. I never suggest buying a new, but the price was right for you and they are a decent option on the used market.

Purchase help!

Used recent model Kirbys are dirt cheap. Just bought a Kirby Avalir 2 with all attachments… their current model… for $150 on Facebook. Also have a 10 year old Kirby Sentria that I paid $15 for at a swap meet. Both work good as new.
