From a privacy point of view, there are legitimate reasons to think twice about having a smart speaker in your bedroom, especially if it's always on and listening for a wake word that sounds remarkably similar to the name of your pet schnauzer.  But if you aren't, um, alarmed by that, the iHome AVS16 is a legitimate alternative to a conventional clock radio. It lets you set the alarm using voice commands and, if you have smart bulbs and outlets, you can begin your day by turning the lights on and jump-starting the coffee maker on command, too.
Like most smart speakers, it also has a dedicated switch to turn off the microphone when you want additional privacy.   Our testers find the iHome's sound to be decent, at least by alarm clock standards. The highs and lows aren't exceptional, but the all-important midrange—which is where most of the music resides—is the AVS16's sonic strong suit.

It's OK if you ignore some of the annoyances of it.

 Also, your Wi-Fi connectivity better be rock solid, because this device won't wake you up in the morning if you're disconnected. I've also had it wake me up in the middle of the night with it alerting me verbally that the signal has been lost. I had to unplug it in the dark to shut it up. On the good side, I love the look and the display in particular

 Alarm setting is a mixed bag. The best feature for me is being able to set a channel from iHeartRadio to wake me up on a recurring schedule, but beyond that, alarm options are severely limited. A mixed bag with some great features, but really just "good enough"

Complicated for no reason

  First, it is so bright. You can’t adjust the light on the top buttons. It really does bother me at night. I turned off the bottom light panel immediately

 It’s a passive aggressive way of limited the amount of days my guests stay with me. “Wink.”

Too many cons with this one

 - When they say you can control ihome devices they mean it, ONLY iHome devices. Don’t think you will gain access to Amazon Skill functions and IHome is not an IFTTT partner. No Hue or My Leviton Control is possible.

So close is so many ways.  Unfortunately mine is going back.

A really cool idea but not actually a great device

Problem could not be solved

 The snooze button only works if you use the iHome default alarm sounds. This unit could be so cool--but there is still work to be done. I'm holding out hope that system upgrades will be done to better the unit I have--since it is not cheap.

Can't Do Two Things In Succession

I bought this because I wanted a smart alarm clock with Alexa that doesn't have a camera or screen. Compared to my Facebook Portal, that responds every single time you say 'Alexa', this device only responds to voice commands about half the time. Most times, even lying in bed right next to it, saying Alexa only once does nothing, you have to say Alexa a second, sometimes third time before the device will respond. With my Portal I can say Alexa halfway across the house and it will register what I am saying the first time

  The sound quality of this speaker is good, but the sound volume has big gaps in loudness from one level to the next. And if music is playing at a decent volume, good luck on it picking up you saying Alexa AT ALL.

Bought for the Alexa function, but it only works sometimes.
