So it's a fabulous mic, it's a really nice mic, it works extremely well.

I still use the Electro Voice re320 today but I also have the Rode Procaster and the Audio Technica BP-40. Eventually I will look at an Electro Voice re20 and anything else that looks good but the re320 has been my workhorse for over 5 years now and it does well to help my voice rather than hurt it.

My favorite dynamic in that range: Electro-Voice RE320 (pushed midrange, vintage broadcast sound, basically no proximity effect, despite being dynamic the openness feels like a condenser- despite it being more affordable than the RE20, I prefer the RE320 due to the enhanced clarity). Both of those mics have a distinct sonic signature and don’t work for everything.

i'd spend the extra cash on better mics. forget the 'cheap kick mic' and '57 clone' and by better mics. some examples in your budget: Beyerdynamic m201, Beyerdynamic m88, Electro Voice RE320, Warm Audio 47jr. If you want to stick to recording yourself then in the long run you will have way more from better mics than an external preamp or other ourboard stuff.
