 So let's check this out and see how they sound. So let's check this out and see how they sound. So there you have it, the DR Pure Blues strings. Probably some of the brightest sounding nickel strings I've ever played and they feel really nice too

 This is a brand new string from DR, I just got them at NAMM 2015 and I'm really excited to try these because these are Quantum Nickel Strings which are supposed to have the sound of steel and the feel of nickel strings and I'm a big fan of the sound of steel strings I love the brightness of steel strings and I've actually been using the DR High Beams for many many years but I also love the feel of nickel strings and a lot of people don't like the feel of steel strings because they're really rough you know they're really hard on your hands and they're a lot harder to play than nickel strings. So if you can get the sound of steel with the feel of nickel that's pretty awesome. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to play these strings in several different styles and I'm going to compare it with the Sun Beams which are nickel strings and the High Beams which are steel strings. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to play first through the High Beams, then through the Sun Beams and then through the Pure Blue Strings and then we'll see how it sounds

DR Pure Blues Bass Strings Demo and Review

I have a Schecter Stiletto Studio-5 FF bass. I love the instrument, but I literally can't find strings that fit it other than Ernie Ball 5 String Super Longs #2850. Since it's fanned fret, it goes from a 34"-36" scale. The Ernie Ball set is designed for 35", but still works on this bass because it tapers at 38 1/2". Anyone have any other bass string recommendations that would fit this thing? We play quite of a bit of heavier metal/rock, drop A#-ish tunings. I'll link the bass and EB strings spec pages below.

Schecter Stiletto Studio-5 FF Bass Strings Mystery!

 I usually use DR Tite-Fits. I have a Fender semi-hollow body with humbuckers. Overall these have a darker sound, less punchy and bright. Being pure nickel, they seem to pick up corrosion faster too - I put a new set on last weekend for rehearsal and picked up my guitar a few days later (I did wipe down the strings after playing) and the high E and B strings have a weird vibration/buzzing sound to them due to the corrosion build-up

Long-time fan/user of DR strings. Like all guitar players, I am constantly chasing better tone so I figured I would try these out. I usually use DR Tite-Fits. I have a Fender semi-hollow body with humbuckers

I'm currently running NYXLs on my Stingray 5er, I like the longevity of the tone and the note articulation for live shows without being overly bright.  


And I run Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats on my P bass for a great blend of vintage coolness and modern translation. Also the lighter tension helps my fingers on 4 hour gigs.

Great strings, but poor delivery

 I don't like high end spiky sounds sometimes when I'm playing live, so I was going to try these out. And the other thing, I put some of these recently on another guitar of mine and I put a set of 10s on it, and they felt slightly stiffer than Ernie Ball's Slinkies, but they felt really slick and smooth, and I like the way they felt and I really like the way they sound. So what I thought I would do is that some of these guitars, like this Gold Top over here that I play with the Black Bottom Biscuits, I always tune those standard, and because I play so many leads in that band, I usually run 9s, because I'm doing lots of bending and I'm playing a lot of leads, and I felt it was a little easier on my hand. But 9s feel almost too light, but when I put 10s on and run standard tuning, sometimes my hand gets a little tired

 So what I thought I would do is that some of these guitars, like this Gold Top over here that I play with the Black Bottom Biscuits, I always tune those standard, and because I play so many leads in that band, I usually run 9s, because I'm doing lots of bending and I'm playing a lot of leads, and I felt it was a little easier on my hand. But 9s feel almost too light, but when I put 10s on and run standard tuning, sometimes my hand gets a little tired. So what I was thinking is that if these are slightly stiffer feeling than Ernie Ball's Super Slinkies in the Pink Pack, which is what I usually have on this guitar, then that might be a good compromise, might be a good compromise, and I'll see how they sound, plus these supposed to last longer. So what I'll do is, the strings on the Gold Top over here aren't that old, so what I'll do is, get that tuner off, is I'll let you hear what it sounds like

Gear Thread: Week of Nov. 23

Great tone, but three sets in a row have come unwound on the d string at the 2nd fret in a very short time. Doubt if I will buy these again.

Disappointing

They have top notch marketing and packaging imo, probably what got me when I was younger, but is it just me when I notice quality is really lacking on their bass string selection?

I had this talk with a fellow bassist and he said Ernie ball strings are kind of a phase musicians work through until they find a better brand, and I can’t help but agree based on my own experience.</p>
